Film

  • California Doubling: Canada doubled for New York.
  • The Danza: Jean-Claude Van Damme's son Christopher plays the young Chris Dubois.
  • Directed By Castmember: Jean-Claude Van Damme made his directorial debut.
  • Fake Nationality: Doubly. The Spanish fighter is played by Albanian Peter Malota, and his fighting style resembles more Korean Taekwondo.
  • Hey, It's That Place!: Lord Edgar Dobbs takes Christopher Dubois to Muay Thai Island and sells him. Roger Moore was last on this island while filming the final scenes of The Man with the Golden Gun. These are the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand.
  • Hostility on the Set:
    • Roger Moore wrote in his autobiography that he greatly disliked both Jean-Claude Van Damme and producer Moshe Diamant, referring to the former as Jean Claude Veneral Disease.
Then we met the chap who called himself our producer, Moshe Diamant. I have nothing nice or even vaguely redeeming to say about him, I'm afraid. So, in the best tradition, I'll say nothing.
    • There was a lot of competition between the various martial artists, as they were all vying for screentime. Thankfully, Van Damme managed to keep them under control before things got physical.
  • Old Shame: Roger Moore didn't like this film at all and regarded it as his least favorite on his filmography.
  • Real-Life Relative: Jean-Claude Van Damme cast his own son as his younger self in the flashback sequences.
  • Troubled Production: In his autobiography, Roger Moore recalled that the film was a disorganized production that was running out of money due to poor preparation. Apparently, when the production was running out of money, many of the crew were even asked to work for free to keep filming on schedule; the producers promptly found the money for the filming when said crew laughed at them and threatened to strike. At the end, Moore credits Second Unit Director Peter MacDonald for bringing it all together. According to Jack McGee, Van Damme would often not turn up on set, causing delays. The crew coped by sightseeing or hanging around the hotel pool.
