Trivia tropes for The Ghost and Molly McGee

Trivia with Their Own Pages

  • Acting for Two: Molly's mother and grandmother are both voiced by Sumalee Montano.
    • Both Scratch and a gloomy resident of Brighton named Todd are both voiced by Dana Snyder. The finale reveals this to have been intentional, as Scratch actually turns out to be a Wraith, and Todd is his human body.
  • Actor Allusion:
    • Blair, the horror movie-obsessed ghost from "The Unhaunting of Brighton Video", is voiced by Kimberly J. Brown, who is best known for her role as Marnie Piper, the protagonist of the Halloweentown series of Disney Channel films.
    • The B-plot "Let's Play Turnipball!" is essentially one big homage to Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Scratch, a character voiced by Dana Snyder ONCE AGAIN harasses a meatball.
  • Actor-Shared Background:
    • Ashly Burch and her character Molly are both half-Thai, half-Caucasian.
    • Everyone in Libby's family is voiced by a Jewish actor. The same goes for Rabbi Katz.
  • Adored by the Network: Like many other Disney shows over the past several years, this series was renewed for a second season ahead of the premiere. What makes this trope stand out more, however, is that the series also holds the distinction of being the very first Disney Channel Original Series to have some of its episodes get released onto Disney+ ahead of their debut on linear TV.note  Additionally, the theme song is always played at least once during commercial breaks. However, this wouldn't last, as it quickly became a victim of being Screwed by the Network as seen below.
  • Ascended Fanon: It was common fanon that Geoff was gay (for Scratch, that is). Come season 2, and it is revealed that his afterlife partner is a male ghost, also named Jeff, with a J.
  • Content Leak:
    • The audio track of "Ghosts Aren't The Enemy" and a few inaudible clips of Oliver and his family were leaked in late 2022.
    • "Jinx Vs. The Human World" was accidentally released to iTunes on November 25, 2023. It was originally supposed to air on January 13, 2024.
    • The entire plot of the series finale, including the ending scene of the series, itself was anonymously leaked on a 4chan thread in November 2023.
  • Creator's Favorite: Motz's favorite character is Scratch, while Roth's favorite is Molly.
  • Credits Pushback: Just as with all DTVA shows since late 2019, all Disney Channel airings squeeze the end credits to the bottom third of the screen during the last thirty seconds of the episode, despite having a catchy ending theme. This is averted on Disney+ and DisneyNOW, as well as during broadcasts on international Disney Channel feeds.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: Molly's 11-year-old brother Darryl is voiced by Michaela Dietz.
  • The Danza:
    • Kenny Star is voiced by Tom Kenny.
    • In the Hungarian dub, Andrea Davenport is voiced by Andrea Laudon.
  • Dawson Casting:
  • Development Hell: The series was originally developed between Roth and Motz in the 2000s, but it wouldn't be until the late 2010s where it entered development after being greenlit by Disney.
  • Disabled Character, Disabled Actor: Oliver's sister, June, is autistic, like her actress, Sue Ann Pien.
  • Early-Bird Release:
    • Episodes 3–5 premiered on Disney+ before their release on Disney Channel.
    • For the second season, Episodes 2-5 premiered ahead of their broadcast release.
    • Episode 18 of season 2 premiered 3 days ahead of its broadcast release.
  • Fake Mixed Race: The Jewish-Latina Libby is voiced by Jewish actress Lara Jill Miller.
  • Irony as She Is Cast: "Talent Show" reveals Libby is beyond awful at singing; however, her voice actor, Lara Jill Miller, is a pretty decent singer in real life.
  • Meaningful Release Date: The show premiered October 2021, the month of Halloween. It's fitting for a supernatural-themed show like this one.
  • Missing Trailer Scene: In the original NYCC preview of "First Day Frights", there is an extended scene of Scratch being ostracized by ghosts outside the Haughty Haunts Club (with one of the ghosts asking "Who does he think he is?"), which was cut from the final episode. This creates a partial Orphaned Reference in the final episode; One of the Brighton Middle School kids asks the same question about Molly later in the episode, which helps inspire a Heel–Face Turn from Scratch.
  • Out of Order: The Season 2 episode "White Christmess", and along with it "Perfect Day", was hit with this HARD. Production-wise, it was originally the eighth episode, taking place after "Frightmares on Main Street". But due to Season 2's initial release date, its air date was pushed back all the way to December 2023 to coincide with the holidays, making it the third to last episode of the series.
  • Playing Against Type:
    • Music-wise, when it comes to Disney cartoons, Rob Cantor's previous works were Disney Junior shows. This is his first non-preschool Disney cartoon.
    • Liza Koshy usually plays the Cloudcuckoolander and Genki Girl, a stark contrast to Jinx, one of the ghost villains that Molly and Scratch have to deal with.
    • Ashly Burch has often played LGBTQ characters, being LGBTQ herself. But Molly has a crush on Ollie, and has never showed any attraction to girls.
    • Carlos Alazraqui voices Matias, Libby’s father. Carlos voiced a few fathers who care about their kids. Matias is a complete deadbeat.
  • Production Posse: Due to having writer Sammie Crowley on board, various voice actors from The Loud House are reunited such as Grey DeLisle, Lara Jill Miller, Jessica DiCicco, John DiMaggio, Carlos Alazraqui, Sumalee Montano, Kari Wahlgren, Pamela Adlon, Eugene Byrd, Mela Lee, Fred Tatasciore, Jeff Bennett, Tara Strong, Kimberly Brooks, Sean Giambrone, and Trevor Devall
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor:
    • Molly's history teacher Mrs. Roop and her wife Pam Roop are voiced by lesbian actresses Jane Lynch and Erica Luttrell.
    • Gay actor Vincent Rodriguez III voices Geoff's fiancé Jeff.
  • Schedule Slip: Intended to premiere October 2020, was delayed to October 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Screwed by the Network: Following the series finale, co-creator Bill Motz posted a thread on Twitter detailing why the show ended.
    • The first drop of episodes on Disney+ indicated that the show was doing very well. So well, in fact, that Disney commissioned 10 scripts for Season 3. By this point, the show had already been renewed for Season 2 prior to the show's premiere, and the crew was already deep into writing it. Unfortunately, the second drop of episodes released on Disney+ in December 2021 did not perform as well as the first, which Motz attributed to a lack of robust marketing that was present from Disney at the show's launch. Despite the third drop of Disney+ releases doing significantly better, the decision was made by Disney to cancel the show after two seasons in June 2022, just before the first season ended.
    • At the same time that the co-creators requested one final episode to wrap the story up, the transition in the company following Bob Chapek's exit and Bob Iger's return, as well as the fact that Disney liked the show and wanted to see the second season's performance before revisiting the decision, gave the crew hope that the second season would do well enough for Disney to green light a third season. Thus, when the finale's title, "The End," was leaked, at that point, they put the episode on hold until a final decision was rendered. Unfortunately, despite the second season doing well, the network felt that it did not meet their viewership expectations, and thus, the decision to cancel the show was upheld. In fact, the revelation that "The End" would indeed be the series finale was not confirmed until after the episode aired.
  • Shipper on Set: Alan Lee supported the pairing of Molly and Libby. This is quite ironic as he voices Oliver (Ollie) Chen, Molly's canon love interest, therefore sinking the above ship in the process.
  • Short Run in Peru: "The Curse" and "First Day Frights" were leaked online in Disney+ Africa on September 28, 2021, three days before the official premiere.
  • Throw It In!: Burch and Snyder frequently ad-lib additional lines when recording, which often get kept in the final product. One example of this is the brief rambling about bee wings stuck in Molly's hair at the end of "All Systems No"; the writers loved it enough that they cut out a joke they actually wrote so there'd be enough room to keep it.
    • According to Bill Motz, they originally didn't have a name for Scratch's human self while writing for Season 1, referring to them as "Dead Eyes" in the scripts. Then, while recording the episode "Monumental Disaster", Patton Oswalt, the voice of Mayor Brunson, improvised the name "Todd". Everyone loved it and the name stuck.
  • Word of God:
    • Possibly jokingly, but on the possibility that Disney somehow decides to continue the show in the future, Bill Motz said that they would have Todd die, so that Scratch could become an actual ghost.
    • During the Operation: Enhappification Charity Livestream, Bob Roth revealed that he believes that the original Chairman was an ancient evil that had existed since time began, and Bill added on his own belief that the Chairman was essentially the personification of what happens when you shed away all of the things that makes one "human", i.e. joy, kindness and compassion.
  • Working Title: The show was originally announced as "The Curse of Molly McGee", which can still be partially seen in the animatic version of the opening from NYCC 2020. The title was changed to better highlight the growing friendship between Molly and Scratch, as opposed to only emphasizing how Scratch had inadvertently cursed himself with the girl's presence. Some versions of the show, such as Castilian Spanish and European Portuguese dubs, maintain the original title.
