Trivia / The Flying Nun

Go To

  • The Cast Showoff: Sally Field sang in several episodes and contributed to the show's soundtrack.
  • Fake Nationality: In "Papa Carlos," Miko Mayama (born in America and of Japanese descent) plays a Korean.
  • Hide Your Pregnancy: During the series' run, Sally Field became pregnant, and since it couldn't be written into the show's storyline, as the heroine was not just a nun, but one whose flying abilities were attributed to her petite size, the producers used props and scenery to help block any below-the-chest views, and used a stunt double for the flying sequences.
  • Old Shame:
  • The Other Darrin: Psychiatrist Father Lundigan is played by John Astin in his first appearance, but when he returns a season later he is played by Paul Lynde.
  • Plays Great Ethnics: Vito Scotti, who was born in the U.S. to Italian immigrants from Naples, played Captain Gaspar Fomento. Throughout his career, Scotti played Rama from India on the "Gunga Ram" live segment of Andy's Gang, a Russian scientist and a Japanese sailor on Gilligan's Island, a Mexican bandit in Zorro, and numerous Italian and Hispanic-themed characters.

    • Fast Forward had a skit where the convent needs to raise money so Sister Bertrille has to fly paying passengers. The skit was used to parody the troubles besetting various Australian airlines at the time.
    • The First Power. Detective Logan consults Sister Marguerite on the supernatural killer, and makes a snarky comment about her being the Flying Nun.
    • The Goodies did a parody in the episode "U-Friend or UFO" with Tim crossdressing as "Supernun".
  • Star-Derailing Role: Field had some trouble with work for a while afterwards. She was nearly passed up for the title role in Sybil because of this.
  • What Could Have Been: Patty Duke was the first choice for the lead role. Interestingly enough, Duke admitted to wanting to be a nun as a child, even during the early days of her acting career.
