Trivia / The Flying Burrito Brothers

Go To

  • Acclaimed Flop: The band's entire career is pretty much this. Their work was admired by critics and won much respect from their musical peers (most notably The Rolling Stones), and they've come to be regarded as one of the most influential bands of their era. However, in their time, traditional country fans took umbrage with the group's long hair and harder-edged sound, while many rock fans were inclined to tune out the minute they heard a pedal steel. As a result the Burritos' records were not commercially successful.
  • Breakup Breakout: After leaving the Flying Burrito Brothers, Bernie Leadon joined Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Randy Meisner in a country-rock group called the Eagles...who went on to have some success.
  • Fan Nickname: The lengthy, unwieldy nature of the group's full name has meant that they're often referred to as simply "the Burritos" by most fans.
  • He Also Did: Prior to hooking up with Gram and Chris, Sneaky Pete worked as an animator on Gumby, and composed its theme tune.
  • Non-Appearing Title: Several, including "Juanita" and (obviously) the pair of "Hot Burrito" songs.
  • The Pete Best: Jon Corneal, Gram Parsons' old bandmate from the International Submarine Band, handled drums on a plurality of songs from The Gilded Palace of Sin (specifically, "Christine's Tune", "Do Right Woman", "Dark End of the Street", "My Uncle" and "Juanita"), and even got a Nudie suit of his own, but was ultimately not invited to join the Flying Burrito Brothers (apparently in part because Parsons felt that he wasn't good-looking enough). His spot was taken by former Byrd Michael Clarke, and Corneal went on to play with Gene Clark and Douglas Dillard.
  • What Could Have Been: After being wowed upon discovering a pre-fame Emmylou Harris, Chris Hillman considered adding her to the Burritos as a backing vocalist. Ultimately, though, he wound up recommending her to Gram Parsons (who was already out of the band by that point), and she appeared on his two solo albums GP and Grievous Angel.
