Trivia / The Eric Andre Show

Go To

  • Adored by the Network: For whatever reason, the show has become a very common occurrence on [adult swim]’s schedule around the the time of Season 5’s premiere in late 2020. It receives frequent marathons, is heavily promoted, and has two slots (four counting repeats) on their Sunday and weekday schedule. This has continued months after the aforementioned season premiered as well. Not bad for a show with only 51 quarter-hour episodes.
  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!: The famous "Who killed Hannibal?" scene has been reworked into a Never My Fault-type meme where the perpetrator (Eric) asks, "Why would [third party] do this?"
  • Corpsing: On the occasions when the surreal madness becomes too much even for Eric or Hannibal. Hannibal is the more frequent corpser, but Eric has completely lost it on several occasions, too.
  • Dyeing for Your Art: Eric has done crazy things to himself just to make his guest feel uncomfortable around him:
    • For season 3, he had his hair permed to resembled Katt Williams'; that's tame compared to what followed in the next seasons.
    • In season 4, he purposely didn't brush his hair or take a shower and outgrew his fingernails for about a month. His girlfriend at the time broke up with him over this.
    • Season 5 featured his most extreme makeover yet: Eric gained weight, shaved off all his hair (and we mean all of it), doused himself in cologne, and got several spray tans, manicures, and pedicures.
    • For Season 6, Eric had his hair tied in a ponytail. In addition, he gained a more muscular build, giving him a bodybuilder appearance.
  • Enforced Method Acting: Eric Andre and the crew try their best to make each of their guests as uncomfortable as possible, no matter how much they know about the show, and it mostly works. But it should be noted that they also make themselves suffer as well to even it out.
    • Eric himself didn't shower for a whole month before season four. It's pretty notable when the guests say he smells bad.
    • Eric mostly does his own stunts in his set-wrecking gags at the start of each episode. This lead to him getting badly injured during the filming of season 5 when a stunt went wrong, resulting him having to go to the hospital with a concussion note .
  • Funny Character, Boring Actor: Contrary to the ridiculously surreal, over-the-top, and deranged persona he frequently exhibits on his own show, Eric Andre is in real life more soft-spoken and reserved, and has half-jokingly described himself in an Autocomplete Interview for Wired as "depressive and anxious".
  • Meme Acknowledgement: A double whammy. Hannibal responded to the meme of him getting shot by Eric with "Wack."
  • Method Acting: The guests are not the only ones being tortured. Eric and the crew also have to bear with some the conditions they put out such as sweltering heat and smelly seats.
  • Missing Episode: The pilot has never been seen by the public eye save for brief clips shown in a video compilation, a TV promo, and a behind the scenes special released during the fifth season.
  • Romance on the Set: Impressively enough, Eric actually managed to hook up with at least a couple of his guests, Tatyana Ali and Amber Rose, after they first appeared on his show.
  • Schedule Slip: The fifth season has been repeatedly put on hold due to Eric and Hannibal being busy with other projects. It finally started airing in October 2020. However, due to wanting to move on to other projects in real life, Hannibal abruptly quit the show in the second episode of the season. He later returned at the end of the season finale, explaining to Eric Andre that he was never really there.
  • Throw It In!: Because the show runs on Improv with planned gags woven in between, there's a lot of unexpected turns of events. It helps that the guests are usually completely left in the dark as to what to expect, and their responses are often quite genuine and unplanned.
    • Certain guests, such as Lauren Conrad and T.I., have up and left the show early.
    • Eric's pranks often have some interesting results, including civilians actually trying to help him out of some set-up trouble, coming to the defense of actors Eric is roughing up, or throwing his microphone at a police car and forcing Eric to flee the scene. At the RNC, he was detained and had his press pass revoked for dancing around as the USA Freedom Kids, and he was actually arrested and kept in prison for an evening for causing a ruckus at the Rancho Cucamonga city council.
    • Not even Eric himself is immune to being left out on gags. Lance Reddick punching his desk actually got a startled reaction from him. Eric was also clearly taken aback by some of Dennis Rodman's responses in their interview, such as his details on North Korea and admitting to kissing a deceased friend on the lips.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • An interview with Hot Ones revealed that Eric reached out to Nardwuar the Human Serviette to contribute to Season 5, but he declined.
    • Pranks and stunts that Eric wanted to do for the show included having a couple trans people have sex with each other in front of a guest, drive a car in front of a live parade, and having the whole set underwater as Eric destroys it as a Shout-Out to the film Top Secret!; he couldn't do the first two because they were illegal, dangerous, and as for the underwater scene, he tried to do for two seasons, but found that the whole process was too expensive, time-consuming, and would be an overall waste since the scene would have to be cut down in order to be fitted for the show (most of the episodes are only about 11 minutes long).
    • For season 3, there was a bit filmed where Eric had country singer, Travis Jackson, sing a song for a group that he feels has been given a bad rap: Al-Qaeda. Unsurprisingly, the higher ups at [adult swim] vetoed that, which Eric surmised was because of the hate the network got over Black Jesus. However, the scene was aired as part of a video compilation released on Halloween 2020 and was referenced during a joke in season 5.
Hannibal: (after the song plays, looking visibly pissed off) I want my name taken off this show.
    • Eric tried losing weight in order to give himself a sickly appearance, but got severely ill as a result, so he stopped.
    • The show's working title was "Duh Air Ache On Dre Shoe".
    • A special episode showing the full interview with Naya Rivera was considered, but wasn't made to avoid being accused of trying to cash in on the actress' death.
    • The fifth season was to be the final one, but Eric changed his mind because he liked doing the show, as it was the only thing he had full creative control on, and decided to keep the door open for more seasons.
