Trivia / New Super Mario Bros.

  • Creator Backlash: While Shigeru Miyamoto was pleased with the finished game and doesn't hold any ill-will towards it, he admits that he didn't like that he and his team made the game too easy compared to previous Mario games and wished they had made it harder, hence the Sequel Difficulty Spike in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
  • Killer App: The best selling Nintendo DS game of all time with over 30 million units sold, rivaling the original Super Mario Bros.
  • Saved for the Sequel: Their various attempts of making a cooperative Mario game would eventually surface in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and its follow ups.
  • Sequel Gap: Not counting remakes or ports, this is the first original 2D Mario title since Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, which came out 14 years prior.
  • What Could Have Been: The E3 2004 and 2005 betas feature significant differences compared to the final Mario game:
    • While the game was always intended to bridge the gap between both game genres by introducing gameplay elements introduced in 3D Mario games to 2D Mario games, the game had more elements from Super Mario 64 DS at the start of its development. Besides the gameplay elements introduced in 3D Mario games (Triple Jumps, Wall Jumps, and Ground Pounds) in the final game, Mario and Luigi would additionally be able to do the Sideways somersault and punch enemies. Spindrifts and "!" Boxes were also present in the beta and several SM64DS models are found hidden in the final game.
    • Mario and Luigi had more expressive animations including their hat flying off their head similar to Super Mario World and a different victory pose when defeating a boss.
    • While the characters and enemies stayed the same, the environments were more simple.
    • Two player cooperative was present in the main game instead of being its own Mario vs. Luigi mode and the duo were able to reserve three items.
    • The Blue Shell could've been obtained by stomping on a Blue Koopa and collecting it. While Blue Shells in the main game can only be found in places that have a chance to give most of the game's powerups (the overworld Red Flying ? Blocks and Hammer Bros., Roulette Blocks, and Red Toad Houses), a lone Blue Koopa with the same functionality appears in the Snow Arena in Mario vs. Luigi mode.
    • The main theme in the beta was reduced and remixed to one of the Mario vs. Luigi themes. The beta theme was also rearranged for the New Super Mario Bros. Wii and New Super Mario Bros. 2's title themes.
    • The forest and mountain worlds were planned to be an ancient and machine world respectively. This is shown in the unused World Select screen in the final game.
    • The final game has several Dummied Out arenas and items for the Mario vs. Luigi mode. This meant the mode was supposed to be more robust.
  • Working Title: The game started out as the fifth (and first new) game in the Super Mario Advance series before becoming its own thing.
