Trivia / Kirby's Adventure

Go To

  • Development Gag: This game was conceptualized as a straight NES port of Kirby's Dream Land before the developers decided to make it a full-fledged sequel instead. As a nod to this, the final stage is a black-and-white Nostalgia Level that condenses the four main levels from Kirby's Dream Land into one stage.
  • Dummied Out:
    • The HAL Room remains intact in the remake, however, unlike the NES original, it is inaccessible and can only be accessed through codes.
    • Several leftover sprites in the game's ROM feature a tiny Kirby, which is a leftover from an unused shrinking ability.
  • First Appearance: Of Meta Knight.
  • Refitted for Sequel:
    • Two scrapped ideas the dev team had for copy abilities were a "Mini" ability that could shrink to squeeze into tight gaps and an "Animal" ability that could scratch and bite at enemies. These abilities were eventually realized in Kirby & the Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad, respectively. Another ability let Kirby ride around on a rocket, which was realized in Amazing Mirror by letting Kirby become a rocket when he gets the Missile ability.
    • One of Sakurai's ideas for Kirby's copy abilities included being able to cut rope with the Sword ability to drop hanging platforms. This idea would be properly introduced in Kirby Super Star and become a staple of the franchise since.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • When Sakurai's higher-ups originally gave the greenlight for the game, they initially intended for it to be a straight port of Kirby's Dream Land to the NES as a quick cash grab to avoid bankruptcy — HAL was still hurting from Metal Slader Glory failing to make back its budget.
    • Some sprites in the game's ROM suggest a shrinking ability would debut in Adventure, which was confirmed in an interview in the Japanese player's guide. This ability would be used in Kirby & the Amazing Mirror as Mini, though without the ability to slide.
    • Level 2 of Rainbow Resort features a Boss Rush of Mid-Bosses, and it features a secret passage that grants you access to stronger versions of the boss fights but skips to the fight with Bonkers. Unused rooms show that there is stronger version data of the missing mid-bosses.
    • The remake had different sprites for several enemies, including Waddle Dees with more spread out faces, Pengy using the design from Adventure and Poppy Bros. Sr. using the design from Kirby Super Star.
    • In an episode of Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games, Sakurai showed off a few design documents he whipped up during development of Kirby's Adventure. Some of these include the ability for Kirby to generate his own blocks and a "trap" ability that causes Kirby to self-destruct, neither of which made it to the final product. Sakurai also considered removing Kirby's flight under the impression that it would have made the game too easy, but ultimately settled on nerfing flight by decreasing air speed and screen real-estate, as well as a greater emphasis on single-screen fights where flight isn't as useful.
