Trivia / Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods

• Billing Displacement: Despite their characters making a prominent appearance, Masakazu Morita (Whis) and Kōichi Yamadera (Beerus) are billed last in the ending credits.
• The Cast Show Off: At the end of the film, Sean Schemmel does a near-perfect impression of Christopher Sabat's Vegeta when referencing the "My Bulma" scene.
• Directed by Cast Member:
  • The English dub was once again directed by Chris Sabat, who voices Vegeta and Piccolo, among others.
  • The Latin American Spanish dub was directed by Eduardo Garza, who also voiced Krillin.
• Dueling Dubs: The film has two Brazilian Portuguese dubs: one made at the Clone studio (DVD), and another at Unidub (theatrical release/Netflix). Wendel Bezerra, the voice of Goku and owner/director of Unidub, wasn't available to reprise his character in Clone's version.
• The Original Darrin:
  • Kenji Utsumi, in his final time in the role before his death, returns as Shenron after being replaced by Ryūzaburō Ōtomo towards the end of the first run of Dragon Ball Z Kai.
  • In the English dub:
    • After being replaced by Colleen Clinkenbeard for Dragon Ball Z Kai and the 2010-2014 video games, Meredith McCoy returns to play Android 18.
    • Likewise, Brad Jackson returns as Oolong after Bryan Massey filled in for Kai. Jackson also returned for the Buu episodes of Kai, and the earlier episodes of Super before Massey reassumed the role.
    • Kyle Hebert returns as the narrator for the extended version after Doc Morgan had taken over for Kai. It was not to last though, as Morgan later narrated Dragon Ball Super.
    • Via archive audio, Stephanie Nadolny and Linda Young respectively voice Kid Goku/Gohan and Frieza in the flashbacks of the extended version.
  • In the Latin American Spanish dub:
    • After being voiced by Edson Matus in Kai, Mario Castañeda returns to voice Goku for Battle of Gods.
    • The same is done with René García, Ricardo Brust and Cristina Camargo as Vegeta, Mr. Satan and Android #18, respectively.
• The Other Darrin:
  • The English dub marks Colleen Clinkenbeard's first animation performance as Mai, after previously taking over the role for video games in 2008. Julie Franklin voiced Mai in Funimation's dubs for Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT before moving away.
  • In the Latin American Spanish dub:
    • Irwin Daayán stepped down from the role of Dende following the negative reception of Kai, and he was replaced by Javier Olguín.
    • Laura Torres was replaced as the voice of Goten by an unknown actress, given Torres's participation in the ANDA strike against New Art Dub and getting removed from said studio.
    • José Gilberto Vilchis voices Supreme Kai because his original VA Genaro Vásquez was living in Canada.
    • Héctor Lee provides the voice of King Kai, after Ricardo Hill (who dubbed him until the end of the Cell Saga) and José Luis McConnell (who dubbed him in the Buu Saga and Dragon Ball GT).
    • Miguel Ángel Sanróman provides the voice of Master Roshi as Jesús Colín retired from acting and moved to Acapulco in 2005 before dying of natural causes six years later. He also replaces his Kai voice actor, Jorge Roig.
    • Since Mai and Shu were regressed to children at the start of the film, Susana Moreno and Miguel Ángel Leal provide their respective voices instead of their original actors, Carola Vázquez and Ricardo Hill.
    • Ernesto Lezama voices Old Kai because of his original VA Enrique Mederos's death.
• Promoted Fanboy: Band FLOW (who performed the film's themes) and Shoko Nakagawa (voice of the Oracle Fish) were all fans of the series growing up.
• Real-Life Relative: In the Latin American Spanish dub:
  • Mario Castañeda and Arturo Castañeda (the voice actors of Goku and Whis, respectively) are father and son, making their relationship in the movie somewhat Hilarious in Hindsight.
  • Susana Moreno (Mai's VA) is the niece of Eduardo Garza (the voice actor for Krillin).
  • Carlos Olizar, who provides additional voices in the Latin American Spanish dub, is the son of Carlos Segundo.
• Role Reprise:
  • A few of the cast members that did not return for the original run of the English dub of Dragon Ball Z Kai do reprise their roles here: namely Meredith McCoy as Android 18 and Bradford Jackson as Oolong.
  • In the Latin American Spanish dub, most of the original cast members of the dub that did not return for the first 98 episodes of Dragon Ball Kai reprised their roles for the film, such as Mario Castañeda as Goku and René García as Vegeta.
• Self-Adaptation: Prior to this movie, pretty much none of the animated installments in the franchise had more involvement by Akira Toriyama beyond adapting the manga he made and a few bits of art and world building he let them use. This is the first Dragon Ball movie to have its script written by the original creator of the franchise, a pattern that would continue for subsequent movies.
• Swan Song:
  • Battle of Gods marked Kenji Utsumi's final performance as Shenron and his final film before his death less than three months after its release.
  • The Latin American Spanish dub also marked Norma Echevarría's final film; she died on October 27, 2013—only one month after the film's release in Latin America—due to complications from multiple sclerosis.
  • Non-lethat example. This was Cristina Camargo's last time voicing 18 in the Latin American Spanish dub. Ever since, despite how pleased she would've been to return, she couldn't get to make high-pitch voices (she also voiced Puar) and it got really tiring to perform the screams. It was a matter of time, given her age by the time the dub for Super started production.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Beerus was a drastically different character before being further developed. Beerus was originally a lizard alien, spreader of a Hate Plague (his name was supposed to be a play on "virus"), and overall a more villainous character.
  • Beerus was going to be responsible for the Saiyans being evil, as part of his Hate Plague motif. This was changed so that he merely suggested Frieza to destroy Planet Vegeta.
  • Super Saiyan God was going to look more like a golden version of the Super Saiyan 4 transformation with a cape according to Yamamuro. This was dropped for the more simple design it got designed by Akira Toriyama.
  • The film was originally going to be Darker and Edgier compared to previous works. Akira Toriyama, though, was leery of other people handling his creation after 20th Century Fox butchered it with Dragonball Evolution, so he came aboard and re-wrote the film to be closer in tone to the older series and films.
  • Tiffany Vollmer has mentioned that Funimation had contacted her about possibly returning to reprise her role of Bulma to help recapture the sound of the original Dragon Ball Z dub, but she declined, as she didn't want to travel back from her home in New Orleans.
  • Ricardo Hill finally decided to step into the movie to voice King Kai in the Latin American dub, but he did so after Héctor Lee was already done with the recording. One may wonder how would this story have went if Hill was to decline one less petition.^Well...It has been reported that Hill has been experiencing health problems, which would have possibly enforced The Other Darrin.
• You Sound Familiar:
  • Beerus is voiced by Kōichi Yamadera, who previously substituted for Hirotaka Suzuoki as Tien when the latter appeared in episodes 82 through 84 of Dragon Ball Z.
  • In English, Beerus is voiced by Jason Douglas, who played King Cold in Kai.
