• Acting for Two:
  • Tesshō Genda voices both Shirogane and the narrator.
  • Hina Kino voices Lucy and Tanumaro.
• Cancellation: Viz Media sold the first two collected volumes in English digital-only (with some sites posting summaries and dates up to volume four) before abruptly removing it from all digital stores and removing any references to it on their website. New chapters of the magazine version continued to be published and remain available through their subscription service, but unlike Manga Plus they only go up until the end of the Weekly Shonen Jump run.
• Channel Hop:
  • After ten volumes, the series moved from Weekly Shonen Jump to Shonen Jump+.
  • After Viz Media stopped the digital volume release, Seven Seas Entertainment picked up the license to publish the uncut volumes in both print and digital. Viz continued to translate and host simulpublished chapters for the remainder of the Weekly Shonen Jump run, after which the series became exclusive to Manga Plus with a translation by Medibang, Inc.
• Creator's Favorite:
  • At Jump Festa 2022, creator Kentaro Yabuki said his favorite character was Suzu.
  • Satsuki Yamashita, the manga's first English translator, has mentioned Shirogane is her favorite character to translate.
• Crossdressing Voices: Satomi Arai voices the male Ponosuke. As Ponosuke is a very small non-human, she uses a very high voices that's not meant to be especially masculine.
• Dueling Dubs: The Seven Seas releases uses the same translation that Viz used, except the names were reverted to Japanese order, more Japanese Honorifics were retain (albeit inconsistently), and some other very rare changes. However, it has completely redone lettering that replaces more of the in-series text and sound effects.
• Fandom Nod: Readers have long speculated or wanted Soga to get turned into a girl just like Matsuri was. Eventually, his younger sister Haya is introduced, pretending to be a gender-bent version of her brother.
• I Just Write the Thing: Matsuri decides in chapter 53 to tell Yayo and Lu how he used to be male, which the author describes as something that surprised him after he'd already started the chapter's storyboard.
  When a character wants to act in this way, I try not to go against it.
• Incidental Multilingual Wordplay: When fighting Medusa, Matsuri concludes a direct confrontation is necessary. His phrase in Japanese is "makkōshōbu (真っ向勝負)", which literally means "attack the center of the forehead", a pun on how this version of Medusa is a Flying Face. This translates quite elegantly into English as "Guess we gotta fight head-to-head now."
• Keep Circulating the Tapes: For a period, the first two volumes (which have redone art, extras, and a much higher resolution than the magazine chapters) were only legitimately readable in English if you bought them before the series was pulled from stores, and even then was digital-only. A new publisher picked it up about a year behind the first English release.
• Meaningful Release Date: Chapter 43 properly introduces Matsuri's mother Matoi and was released either on or the day after Mother's Day (depending on time zone).
• Missing Episode: Chapter 74 and 75 were not released in English or Spanish on Manga Plus or Viz's website. No reason was given, but it's most likely over a scene where Lu unknowingly fondles an invisible Rochka (which was in chapter 74 and flashbacked to in 75).
• Portmanteau Series Nickname: Abbreviated in Japanese as あやトラ (Ayatora), as indicated by the logo◊ putting the first two characters of each word in a different color. Yabuki uses this abbreviation for author comments, where official sources translated it as AyaTri.
• Production Nickname: Kanade wasn't named until over forty chapters after her first appearance, and took another thirty to get a more personal name she'd used from then on, so the English translator referred to her as "Tsuzu" in the scripts, a pun on "Suzu" and the Japanese pronunciation of "two".
• Role Reprise: The anime extends the cameo of Run from To Love Ru to a speaking role in episode 3 that Fuyuka Ōura returns for.
• Same Voice Their Entire Life: Though Matsuri has a separate voice actor for each gender form, Shoya Chiba voices the male even in flashbacks to when Matsuri was about five.
• Series Hiatus: Because of COVID-related delay across multiple Aniplex productions, only six of twelve episodes aired in the anime's planned released window from January to March 2023, with several weeks off between episodes four and five. The series ended up restarting broadcast from the beginning in July 2023, finishing the new episodes in September. The home video release was delayed from March to September 2023.
• Tribute to Fido: Shirogane is a white cat spirit. A white cat has long been Kentaro Yabuki’s Author Avatar, but he also has an actual white pet cat named “Mochi”, who often appears on the inside cover of the volumes.
• Tyop on the Cover: The color illustration for chapter 98 has the series title in fancy English letters, but it's spelled "Ayakashi Traiangle" ("triangle" transliterates into Japanese as "toraianguru"). This was fixed in the English and Spanish versions.
• What Could Have Been:
  • The series is spun off from a one shot manga titled Reo × Leo. Both follow a similar premise of a romance between a boy transformed into a girl and his female childhood friend, but there are otherwise major differences:
    • There were no spirits or similar supernatural phenomena. Instead, the main character was a martial artist turned female by his father for unknown reasons via Pressure Point.
    • Matsuri's equivalent, Reo Hinomori, was much more energetic, buffoonish, and physically affectionate. He also had light hair even as a guy, though both's female forms are almost identical.
    • Suzu's equivalent, Fuuka, was much more reserved and aloof, and had slightly longer hair. She tended to browse her phone when upset, a trait that was given to Matsuri. Whereas Suzu only tries to keep Matsuri from doing blatantly embarrassing things (like using the wrong bathroom), Fuuka hassles Reo to be more femininely proper.
  • Yabuki's first pitch after completing the DARLING in the FRANXX manga was about an art teacher who investigates haunted pieces of art. The editors didn't think the concept could support a whole series, but the characters of Shirogane, Garaku, and Snegurochka carried over.
  • The first pitch adapting Reo × Leo into a serialization had ninja and most of the same regular cast, but no mention of ayakashi and was more focused on school life. Matsuri was turned into a girl by a forbidden jutsu gone wrong, not a deliberate spell. Suzu and Soga were the president and vice-president of the student council. Instead of spirits, Garaku and Shirogane were a painter ninja and Cat Ninja, respectively. Matsuri had a ninja dog, and one of the designs was very similar to Maron from To Love Ru. The editors' request to include more action elements lead to the addition of ayakashi, the ninja becoming exorcist ninja, and the ayakashi medium plotline.
  • The first draft of Matsuri's outfit was a high-collared sleeveless vest with spats. The windmill/shuriken emblem on the neck was smaller, but there was an even larger one on the back. Elements of it were reused for the training outfit Matsuri wears in flashbacks as well as Suzu's ayakashi medium costume (including the shide on the latter).
  • A more developed design for Matsuri's ninja gear was mostly the same as the finished one, except it still has the spats (now with small openings on the sides) instead of baggy pants.
  • There earliest version of Lu was as tall as Suzu instead of shorter than Matsuri.
  • Yayo's initial design wore glasses and lacked her distinct up-turned eyes.
  • In his first sketch, Soga wore a scarf even with his school uniform and his hair was neat all around instead of flared in the back. He was also Matsuri's classmate instead of his upperclassman, and his surname was "Ninokuruwa".
• Word of God:
  • The author's post for chapter 111 specifies that Matsuri was unaffected by the moon ayakashi freezing time because he ate the food that had Suzu's haku in it.
  • The post for chapter 119 mentions Soga's mother is named "Fumino (文乃)", that she can see ayakashi, and her husband saved her life when they were young.
