Trivia / Among Us

  • Accidentally-Correct Writing: According to Austin of The Game Theorists, the Crewmates' weird biology quirks actually make them very well adapted to repeatedly traveling to and from a zero-G environment.
  • Ascended House Rules: Some popular Modded roles like Scientist and Engineer got added in an update. The Hide and Seek custom ruleset later became an official game mode.
  • Colbert Bump:
  • Demand Overload:
    • After the game's Colbert Bump, the playercount rose to such high numbers that the servers were filled to capacity, causing ongoing issues with creating and joining online lobbies in the weeks that followed. This is one of the reasons why the developers decided to make Among Us 2, before they dropped the idea to keep working on the original game.
    • This is believed to be the reason for the "An unknown error disconnected you from the server" mass disconnect issues reported in Hide and Seek lobbies, among other issues like seeker Impostors killing you from an absurd distance away or some tasks like Medbay Scan taking a while to actually start after you click them; so many people playing that gamemode at once putting too much stress on the servers.
  • Dueling Works: With the lesser-known Space Station 13. Both games have a similar setting, and both games feature mechanics like Werewolf (1997). There's even an antagonist that is also inspired by The Thing in the form of the Changeling.
  • He Also Did: Prior to working on Among Us, PuffballsUnited was known for making the Henry Stickmin Series.
  • Referenced by...: Has its own page.
  • Sleeper Hit: The game first launched in 2018 to no fanfare. It only started seeing huge success during the latter half of 2020, based on good word of mouth, some attention from big YouTube channels, and references to the game in The Henry Stickmin Collection.
  • Urban Legend of Zelda:
    • For a while, there was a rumor that listening to the oxygen canisters will reveal the name of the impostors in the game round. This turned out to be a trolling attempt.
    • One urban legend that has been confirmed however, is the vitals monitoring trick, in a case of Genius Programming and Shown Their Work. When a murder occurs, the vitals of the impostor would suddenly experience a short surge at the same time as the victim's flatlines. If you're quick enough to catch the surge while monitoring vitals, congratulations! you have found the impostor.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • After the game blew up in popularity in late 2020, a sequel, titled Among Us 2, was initially put into development in order to make a new better version of the game with new content. However, this was dropped in September of 2020 in favor of simply updating the original game.
    • The impostors were originally going to be called "The Infected", a nod to their role as parasites.
    • There was going to be a kill animation where the impostor would strangle their victim with a wire. It was never animated due to being deemed too graphic.
    • Rather than doing tasks to fill a task bar, the original plan was to have tasks replenish a life bar, with failing a task resulting in losing HP.
    • Tan was going to be an available color for the astronaut. It was cut due to it being too similar to brown and orange, which could have led to confusion during discussions. However, it was added in a later update.
    • There used to be unique ending screens, complete with unique sounds, for Game Overs that happened when the Impostor or too many Crewmates just leave the game. The former has since been quietly re-added in the Hide and Seek mode.
  • Working Title: Internal files refer to the game as "spacemafia", which is perhaps a bit too on-the-nose.
