Behold all the moments that make you cry in Book 1 of Luz Clawthorne: Hexside's Number One Delinquent Witch.

    Title Sequence

Chapter 1: The Owl Lady's Daughter
  • After Luz sabotages Amity's project, causing the abomination classroom to be overrun with ghosts, the rest of the student body wastes no time mocking her for this. Despite Luz's relentless optimism in the face of this adversity, readers doubtless shed a tear on her behalf.
  • It's also hard not to feel just a little bit sorry for Boscha after she's left in pain from all the stuff that got in her eye.

    Chapter 2: Won't Get Away
  • Eda learns from Principal Bump that if high-class parents learn Luz is her daughter and messing with their kids, they'll report them to the Emperor's Coven and either have them sent to the Conformatorium or separate them. And knowing what they do to humans, Eda refuses to let that happen.
  • Upon arriving home, Luz and Eda get into a heated argument that ultimately ends with Luz saying Eda isn't her real mom. She immediately regrets it and a hurt Eda grounds her on the spot and sends her to her room.

Chapter 3: Here Comes the Tutor
  • The chapter opens with our first glimpse into the Slayground incident; granted it's only a dream, but it still shocks Luz awake and crying because she can't forget the pain from that day.
  • Luz feels so guilty about what she said to Eda that she believes she made the woman who raised her, the one who took her in when she had no one, hate her as much as any other witch. Eda, on the other hand, feels like she hadn't been a good mother while revealing that because her curse prevented her from finishing school, she's afraid that someone will orchestrate the same kind of event to Luz.
  • When being given a prediction, Jerbo learns that his parents are going on a ski trip where he has to prevent a death. As for Luz, she saw herself surrounded by shadows telling her to die and out of panic, she kicked Barcus's cauldron away, fearing the thought of reliving her past.

Chapter 4: Incidents and Family Secrets
  • Even though Luz isn't bothered by the hate message made against her in the previous chapter, Eda is extremely pissed as she hates someone targeting her kid like that.
  • Luz is shocked to learn she has an aunt Eda never thought to mention with Eda countering that if she did, Luz would've wandered the isles looking for her and at least she brought her out of the house every once in a while. This unintentionally reopens the wound of the Slayground incident but while Luz takes responsibility for sneaking off, Eda feels guilty about taking her eyes off her and worries that'll happen again at school. Luz assures her that it won't.
  • Amity gets cornered by two muggers who threaten her at knifepoint, stealing her money and one of her shoes. The second she gets home, she begins crying into her pillow.

Chapter 5: King and Lil Luz's Day Out
  • One of the students involved in swapping Eda's elixir (the squid-faced one) mentions his parents got divorced and his mom has taken up drinking.
  • Once Eda comes inside tired, Luz notices her eye turning black and instantly worries about the curse taking her over.
  • In a flashback, Lil' Luz (who was crying due to King taking his stuffed animal away from her) is scared even more by Hooty unintentionally making terrifying faces at her.
  • While searching for another elixir bottle, Luz asks King why he acts strange when things concern the elixir, feeling he doesn't trust her with it. He briefly remembers what happened to her in the past, but luckily doesn't have to answer her after they hear the Owl Beast attack Hooty.
    • As the two hide from the Owl Beast, King says he's scared for Luz and worried that if they can't cure Eda, she'll be stuck in that state. Luz reassures him that won't happen.
  • In another flashback when they're in the nest of flying pigs, King proceeds to air out his grudge against Lil' Luz only to break down crying since he envies her for being given so much, yet sympathizes with her for having no one until Eda took them in. Becomes heartwarming when Luz takes her first steps in order to give King a hug.
  • As Luz grew up and began running her own scams, finding new friends and attending school, King became lonely because he stayed the same and missed her. He also can't forgive himself for another incident from her youth.

    Chapter 6: Emotional Guilt
  • After her first plan to cure Eda fails, Luz begins to have a breakdown at everything happening from her plan probably leading to the Snagglebeast getting eaten to what's happening at school possibly leading to her being taken away from Eda.
  • Right after Eda is cured, King yells at Luz for acting on impulse as she got scratched by the Owl Beast and ends it by telling her he doesn't wanna see her get hurt again, revealing whatever happened to her is the reason why he didn't want her near the elixir and if anything happens to her, it's because he didn't do enough. She gives him a hug to reassure him she can handle herself.
  • Upon waking up and remembering what happened, Eda heads straight downstairs to check on Luz and King. Upon seeing Luz's bandaged arm. Eda pulls her into a solemn embrace and apologizes for what she did.
  • As for Amity, she's become locked in an inner struggle to either keep her mugging secret to preserve her family's reputation or tell them only to be reprimanded for allowing it to occur.

Chapter 7: Double Double Tutor and Trouble
  • Things open on Amity at a desk in a purple void, being observed and praised by her teachers, Lilith, and her mother. Suddenly, the mummy girl is holding her at knifepoint and a pale version of herself wraps her arms around her neck beginning to suffocate her. Cue Catapult Nightmare with her holding her neck, rocking back and forth to calm herself down.
  • After Skara and Amelia meet up with her, Amity discovers another student, Levi Thians, was mugged and suffered severe injuries. She can't help but feel sorry for him and guilty she didn't report her own attack.
  • Mortified after Eda revealed several embarrassing things about her to Amity, Luz is convinced that she'll tell everyone at school. Willow attempts to comfort her by telling her how her dad does the same, but is forced to admit the "first pie" story is hard to justify.
    • The conversation soon changes to Willow mentioning Levi's attack, which shocks Luz as Levi was a shy, reserved boy who never bothered anybody. Amity, who's listening from the other side of Luz's door, begins feeling more guilty as her inner self tells her not to say anything.
  • One of the vines from the piranha plant coils around Amity's neck, choking her. Although Willow manages to stop it, the Blight is left shivering at reliving that event again.
  • It's hard not to feel sorry for Amelia, who's left in tears at not only her and Skara's project being ruined, but her house getting burned down in the process. It wouldn't be hard to figure out her parents' reaction to the disaster.

     Chapter 8: Witch's Duel or Don't
  • Luz assumed Lilith is the reason why Eda never let her meet her grandparents.
  • Upon seeing the boy who was involved in her mugging, Amity feared the posters made by Barcus to advertise her witch's duel against Luz brought him and others to the Convention and ran off to hide.
    • By the time Luz finds her, she's got red eyes from crying and isn't up for the duel; she then proceeds to call Luz out for challenging her when she wanted to give her a confidence boost and bullying others without thinking about their feelings. Luz proceeds to apologize and explain how she used to be an optimist who struggled with being a human in a world of people that don't understand her.
  • Eda spent all of Luz's life dealing with people who would badmouth her, but hearing Lilith, her own sister, insult her, she can't help but be appalled and slapping her in order to defend her daughter.

    Chapter 9: I Ain't Troubled Yet!
  • It's for the best Anu Bist couldn't understand Barcus' response to why he doesn't need sleep and that he wasn't a normal teacher, because he said something that was really depressing.
Barcus: "Ruff! (Is it because you want to escape the dreams of knowing that this is the only place you'll ever work and not amount to anything else but teaching simple minded, hormonal children the hardships of life so that they don't fall into your failures? I mean, that is something I do see in teachers, which I do pity those that had to deal with us. Always letting our emotions dance in our minds driving us crazy and don't think and just do what their hormones tell them to. Plus the fact that you teachers have a very low salary rate and get no credit, not to mention the moral bankruptcy of the educational system that only makes students dumber and the advertisements of getting into a higher education just leads to years of crippling debt after graduation. Surely, it would be expected of us to go through what you've gone through, but there are other choices like getting into a community college or a tempt job. Otherwise, you'd have to do shady jobs in order to get out of college debt)."
  • Eda's subbing for the regular gym teacher, Mr. Roacher, because he's going through a nasty divorce. The kids are all aware of it and wonder if his wife will take the kids and the house.
  • Back in her early days at Hexside, Luz struggled in the Healing Track but her teacher, Ms. Torigore, gave her some encouragement that she'll get the hang of it. Unfortunately, it wasn't genuine: in trying to thank Ms. Torigore, Luz overheard her true opinion of her, how she saw her as nothing more than Eda's "human pet" and how she would kick her out if she was principal. This is what led to Luz's retribution, which landed her in the Detention Track, and her disdain towards teachers.
    • Luz's reaction to this was devastating. Ms. Torigore was the first person, outside of her family and the few friends she has, she though accepted her despite her being human, so when she discovered the truth it hit hard, nearly sending her into a panic attack and leaving her in tears.
  • Luz is determined to show everyone she can be a witch, no matter what. Anu Bist responds by asking if that means she'll put her friends in harm's way to do it. She then realizes she nearly electrocuted Viney, Jerbo and Barcus because she charged in to attack without thinking of everyone's safety, including her own.
    • After she apologizes, Anu Bist doesn't hold it against her admitting that as a trickster demon, he has experienced the feeling of people judging him based on his background.

    Chapter 10: The Conjuring Conflict
  • The old man who got intentionally held back for twenty years to complete a glass sculpture without magic has just completed his masterpiece. Then Boscha lets out a scream that shatters it into nothing, leaving him to pout since that work is now All for Nothing.
  • Amity's reaction to Boscha grabbing her arm, which triggers her Trauma Button, is to shove her away and yelling not to touch her, shocking Boscha and her posse.
  • Skara is left stunned after seeing Amity had a knife concealed in her binder and grows concerned about what it could mean.
  • Everything that leads up to Luz and Willow's friendship being put at risk counts.
    • Their first argument of the night ends with Willow admitting that even though she wanted to see Amity get payed out for her bullying, she feels guilty over the abomination ghost infestation because she knows Luz caused it, leaving the rogue alone feeling guilty while Willow joined the others inside.
      • Luz attempts to call someone to put her at ease, but they're unable to talk since they're dealing with a situation leaving her to vent another way.
    • The second argument isn't any better. Realizing Luz is enjoying the fight against the demon hunters (who she ended up provoking and right before she gave her an apology), Willow angrily tells her she's not being a good friend and that her constant attempts at standing up for her friends hurts them more than helps, ending it by saying if that's how she wants to live her life then she doesn't want to be part of it. It brings Luz to the brink of crying.
  • Amity has become so focused on finding the muggers and bringing them to justice, she isn't thinking straight. When Eda and King find her, she's all alone and has bags under her eyes implying she hasn't been getting much sleep because of this.
  • Luz's night gets worse; as a result of Eyepatch grabbing her and making a threat on her life, she viciously beats him unconscious and is horrified that she had an episode in front of everybody, making a beeline for her room.

    Chapter 11: Coming to Terms
  • Upon seeing Amity outside her room, Luz realizes she saw what she did to Eyepatch and internally panics, worrying that she now thought of Luz as an animal.
  • As Luz informs Amity about her argument with Willow, the girl in question passes by them without so much as a glance. Even if she was chasing a reanimated squirrel with the others, she's still mad and Luz knows it shamefully admitting she's a bad influence on her.
    • To try and cheer Luz up, Amity somberly admits Luz has been a better friend to Willow than she ever was.
  • To understand Luz's episodes, both Amity and the reader are finally given the full story of the slayground incident: during her first outing from the Owl House, Luz distracted Eda in order to sneak away and go play. However, she ended up flying off the swing, her hood fell off and upon seeing she was human, all the kids and teenagers pelted her with rocks and beating her. By the time Eda got to her, Luz had several bruises, cuts and her leg was gashed open. Ultimately, Luz lost a part of herself that day and it took her eventual resolve to get stronger to keep her going.
    • Even after getting revenge on the mob and treating Luz's wounds, Eda blamed herself for letting Luz slip away, tearfully holding her little girl in her arms vowing to never let something like that happen again.
  • Luz discovers Viney gave the others a ride home, Willow having been the most eager to leave because of their fight.
  • Amity sees just how different the atmosphere of a family breakfast at the Owl House is from her home and begins to tear up because her family isn't so close.
  • Even though Viney admits her part in the abomination infestation to help patch things up, Willow says it'll be a while before things between her and Luz work out.
  • Webstor Manylegs, writer of Otabin, was promoted to head of the Emperor's Coven's media and news department sometime after the slayground incident. It'd be a good thing if he wasn't being forced/threatened by Kikimora to cover up Luz's entire existence.

    Chapter 12: Heart to Heart
  • Because of her falling out with Willow, Luz has started feeling guilty about the abomination ghost infestation. No matter how much she denies it, she's scared of how Amity'll react once she finds out.
  • Seeing Levi struggle to do anything due to his cast and learning how no one bothered to help him is harsh.
    • The second Luz brings up Levi to Amity (who refused to even look at him because she's reminded of her own attack), she brushes it off and changes the subject, wanting to avoid it.
  • There's also how Amity told Luz she couldn't waste her time with her in that moment. She was trying not to get mad at Luz since her siblings were there but it still hurt the rogue a bit.
  • Once Luz came home and learned she had a missed globe call from a girl from Hexside, she had hoped it would be Willow. Instead it was a tired, manic Viney also wracked with guilt for the ghost infestation saying they needed to confess to Pricipal Bump so she can rest easier.
  • Once Edric and Emira see the effects of writing in the books, they attempt to get Luz to draw in the "Otabin" book she's holding. She vehemently refuses to tarnish it and tries to leave.
  • After learning how the twins were planning to humiliate Amity by stealing her diary, Luz beats them up and screams at them to leave. That ended up reminding her of the slayground incident and causes an anxiety attack. Had Amity not been informed of the three of them returning to the library, she wouldn't have been there to help Luz.
    • After this, Luz decides to own up to causing the ghost infestation, sounding genuinely upset for not considering how it would affect Amity and tearfully saying she shouldn't tutor her anymore because of it.
    • The moment gets worse when the girls sees Otabin's altered form. Luz is horrified to see him like this and refuses to harm him in any way, since reading his book helped with her recovery from the slayground incident.

    Chapter 13: The Talk
  • The second she gets home, Amity lays into the twins for what they did, defending Luz because of what she's had to deal with in the past and telling them they don't understand what she's been through either. This ends up setting off Emira, who believes Amity's admitting she's better at them. This, combined with bringing up her failed friendship with Willow, causes Amity to slap Em and the latter getting so angry, she grabs the former unintentionally triggering her trauma. The twins are shocked when their baby sister starts crying and begging not to be killed and after she locks herself in her room, they realize what had happened.
    • As a result of breaking down, Amity's inner voice states the twins would tell their parents who would chastise her for her weakness. Because of her fears, she states she hates feeling weak, her life, even her family.
    • The twins realize they really weren't fair to Amity and after talking to her and learning the whole story, they tearfully hug her (Edric even berating himself for not being a better older brother and protecting her) sympathizing with her feeling trapped and saying they felt she grew up too fast. The two decide they would be more supportive of her from then on.

    Chapter 14: Swap or Not
  • The chapter starts with Luz being shocked out of a dream again; this time, her getting closer with Amity is interrupted by her beaten 5-year-old self telling her being how they are now prevents them from getting hurt that badly again. Amity (now with glowing red eyes) tells Luz she'll never be good enough for her before Luz falls through the floor into a pool where several hands attempt to pull her under the water. Little Luz somberly tells her if she goes soft, she'll never be accepted, loved or become a witch. All Luz can do is struggle in vain as the hands pull her down and everything goes dark.
  • Before entering Bump's office, Luz spots Willow hanging out with some plant track students, and sighs to herself.
  • Viney's confession to Principal Bump is filled with guilt, but is so over the top, it's also hilarious.
  • Luz arguing with her inner self about going soft throughout the chapter. It gets to the point where she gets herself thrown in jail with a sense of pride before realizing how bad the situation is.
    • The reason she was thrown in jail in the first place was because she made slanderous graffiti of Emperor Belos. Even worse, the coven guards who arrested her would've brought in Skara, Amelia and Tyler on charges of association and seeing how freaked out they were caused Luz to take all the heat and say they were trying to stop her.
  • During Lilith's interrogation, Luz accuses her of trying to get to know her so she can use such information to capture Eda. Luz goes on to question how Lilith knows nothing about her despite her involvement in several events, including the Boiling Zit Incident. Lilith is genuinely surprised that Luz was at the center of that and apoligizes for not doing anything sooner.
    • As Lilith watches her adopted niece cry, she briefly sees a teenage Eda in her place. Her guilt over past mistakes is starting to show.
  • Years of constant whitewashing have left Webstor a broken spider, overweight and miserable from the constant coverups. Of course if he stops, he'll end up dead.

    Chapter 15: Friendship Dynamics
  • During her first meeting with Gus, Luz learns his mother hasn't been around much. When she asks how long it's been since he's seen her, he says it's been a year. Luz and King figure things out instantly.
  • Even though Mattholomule is still the same conniving jerk he started out as in canon, it's hard not to feel sorry for him as Puck Goodfellow sets him up to be put through hell at Boscha's hands.
  • Gus spends two days worrying over how with things between Luz and Willow being how they are and them hanging out with other people could tear their friendship apart just like his parents' marriage and desperately goes to extreme measures to try and fix it. Eventually, he comes to accept that they'll make up when they're ready and that it's time for him to talk to his dad and get closure on the divorce.
  • In the flashback to when Luz first met Willow, Gus unintentionally insulted Luz by calling her a thing. Still affected by the slayground incident, she blows them off when he keeps asking her questions, which make her uncomfortable. It's only through Eda's encouragement that she gives them a chance.
  • After Skara ends their friendship, Bo is left in tears and the former is ashamed of what she did.

    Chapter 16: Mischief Gathering
  • Following a training session where Anu Bist called her attacks simple, Luz begins to doubt her glyph cards will be enough to pass the semester exams.
  • Skara is chewed out by Willow for how she broke off her friendship with Bo, with Willow stating her disappointment at how she could just throw it away, how she was using Boscha as an excuse to justify it, and saying she was no better than Amity for going through with it. Skara solemnly agrees that it was her choice, and Willow's disappointment stung worse to her than Boscha's ever would've.
    • Willow's statement is based on her own experiences; she saw someone go through exactly what she went through with Amity.
  • Learning that the curse is getting worse as it now takes two elixirs to change her back, Eda makes King swear he won't tell Luz to keep her from worrying. Although he does agree, he isn't okay with it and tells Eda if Luz gets hurt because she keeps the truth from her, it'll be her fault; she doesn't deny it, clearly not comfortable with it herself.

    Chapter 17: Raising Human
  • Three years after the slayground incident, Eda decided to teach Luz how to punch in order to defend herself. The problem was that Luz was hesitant to do so, as it involved remembering that day in order to vent. Doing so would send her into a panic attack. Eventually Luz outright quit without even trying one of the exercises, crying out that she's not good enough and she doesn't belong in the demon realm. You'd have to have a heart of stone not to be as shocked as Eda after that outburst.
  • After learning the Bloom of Eternal Youth is revealed to be fake, Eda curb-stomp pounds the scam artist in a fit of rage before running off. When Lilith finds her, she's crying because a part of her knew it was fake but still gave herself false hope it was real. Lilith figures out the curse is worsening and tries to get Eda to think about joining the Emperor's Coven and send Luz back to the human realm for her own safety since Lilith doesn't know what Belos wants with her. She tells Eda that despite her love for her child, sooner or later she'll have to make a difficult decision.
    • During the conversation, Lilith admits she once had a boyfriend, but adds that he left her.
  • At the same time, Luz beats Piniet senseless when he threatens King and insults her comic; by the time she stops seeing red, she's sick to her stomach for losing control again and isn't able to move. Had Puck not helped them, they would've been arrested.
  • Puck reveals that he's been watching Luz because he was jealous of the life she lives and lonely at the same time, hoping they could be friends.

    Chapter 18: Reunion
  • A flashback reveals Dipper and Mabel's parents weren't expecting twins, so they asked Stan to take in Dipper. Stan didn't tell him the truth because he wasn't sure how he'd take it: all Dipper knew was that his parents lost their lives. Stan was left dreading the day Dipper would learn the truth, which came that very summer when Mabel came to visit.
  • Mabel, having come to Gravity Falls to meet her twin brother, is initially saddened by the fact that he already has a sister he's close to and that they have the bond she wishes to create.

    Chapter 19: Summerween Fright
  • Luz does her best to keep her cool, but when Gus insists on staying in the human realm despite being terrified of the clowns he keeps seeing, she blows up and screams he didn't even want him to come, which she immediately regrets. She later reveals to him why she had to come to Gravity Falls and that if he got hurt, Willow would never forgive her and she wouldn't be able to forgive herself.
    • After that, Mabel learns Dipper was planning on ditching her to attend Tambry's party with Luz. Since she just wanted to spend time with him, she's understandably hurt even saying the journal is the only reason he ever spends time with her.
  • Luz's freakout after the car crash in trying to find Dipper, then pulling him into a hug which bothers Mabel more.
  • While they're hiding from the clowns, Mabel explains to Dipper how she feels she missed so much, realized she can't make things the way she wants them to and how she's jealous of what he and Luz have. In turn, Dipper admits he wasn't able to handle everything and avoided her as a result.
  • The Summerween Trickster, who doesn't play a major role in the chapter's events, sadly laments to King and Gideon how nobody cares about him.
  • Instead of accepting Skara's apology, Bo (inspired by Willow's talk with her) outright refuses it and slaps her as a way of challenging her to a witch's duel at the semester exams. Skara is left devastated by the turn of events.
    • After seeing the whole thing, Willow seems to realize Bo took her advice the wrong way and must be feeling guilty she made things worse.
  • Because of the car crash, Luz begins to remember bits of a moment we're already aware of: the car crash that claimed her mother's life.

Chapter 20: Blighted by the Light
  • Because of what happened with Bo last chapter, Skara's become a blubbering mess.
  • While checking up on Levi, his arm having healed, Amity learns that he's decided to drop out of Hexside to help his father make ends meet. She spends the rest of the chapter feeling guilty for not reporting her own mugging, believing there could've been a chance Levi could've gotten help in time and breaking down in tears while calling herself a coward at one point.
    • This causes doubt that nearly sends her into a panic attack after Edric and Emira get captured by the Slitherbeast.
  • Because of a disagreement with Mabel that gets her banned from the book store before she can get the fourth volume of "Good Witch Azura" for Amity, Luz breaks down in tears and angrily rebuffs Mabel's attempt to check on her before running off.
  • What upsets Luz the most about Mabel's forced bonding was how she tried to make Luz more like her instead of accepting her for who she is. For someone who feels like an outsider in the world she was born in and the one she was raised in, that's a hard hit.
  • After returning home, Amity ends up in a discussion with her mother who's tired of her slip-ups and how they started when she began tutoring the "human thug". Odalia then gives her an order: the second the exams are over, she'll cut all ties with Luz so she can get back on track, which she submits to.
    • This is followed by a brief musical number which ultimately ends with her discovering her true feelings for Luz. In other words, Amity is being forced to end not only another friendship, but the bond she has with the girl she just realized she has a crush on.

    Chapter 21: Exams to Survive
  • Puck is revealed to have Laser-Guided Amnesia and is unable to remember how to fly, the names of friends he made in the past or why he was cast out from his kind.
  • Boscha's response to Skara about her witch's duel with Bo? Nonchalantly saying she doesn't tolerate failure, which makes the rest of her posse nervous.
  • After realizing her feelings for Luz combined with what her mother told her, Amity tries to avoid Luz out of fear, with Luz becoming convinced she did something to cause such fear or that Amity wants nothing to do with her now that the tutoring is over.
  • Luz briefly worries that the Troublemakers will be no more after they pass the exams, but the others assure her they'll still hang out. Any teenager can relate to the idea of their friends drifting apart as they get older.
  • After hearing why Bo challenged Skara, Mattholomule admits he relates with her situation, saying friends only mess with your feelings and use you for their own gain. There's also the fact that he had hoped Hexside would be different but is exactly the same: he's basically remembering Bria and the crap she put him through, which would make Boscha look like an angel in comparison.
  • Speaking of Boscha, she was actually threatened by Luz during their first conversation to never pick on her friends, which scared her enough to ditch school. No matter the intentions, Luz made the first shot which would cause Boscha to plan out her revenge.
  • Even though it was an illusion, Cat's breakdown after being convinced she accidentally killed Gus was heavy in every sense of the word.
  • It doesn't take long for Luz and Boscha's duel to spiral into a one-sided beating: Boscha, having planned out the entire match, takes her time paying back Luz for everything she's done to her by breaking her limbs and and telling her why she'll never be a witch all while Luz is unable to fight back due to her potion's effects.
    • By the time Amity and Lilith (who came to see how both girls do) arrive at the arena, they attempt to intervene but Amity's pleading to Boscha falls on deaf ears and Lilith is denied entry meaning they're helpless to stop the match.
    • The same goes for Principal Bump and Anu Bist, since Craig refuses to do anything and wants it to continue to send a message to Eda. Bottom line, no one can do anything, and Luz is being left at Boscha's mercy.

    Chapter 22: Changes
  • Picking up where the last chapter left off, Boscha has given Luz serious injuries and after getting everything off her chest, declares the match over. And after what she just witnessed, Amity's on the brink of tears from being unable to help Luz.
    • Soon after, Luz transforms and begins beating Boscha in turn. After injuring the triclops more severely than she did her, Changed!Luz prepares to deliver the final attack. Realizing she's going to maul Boscha, Amity and Lilith start screaming for her to stop. At the same time, Luz is wrestling for control against her inner self (still resembling her at age 5) who's trying to pay back Boscha. It takes Luz pointing out this all happened because she started their conflict and they'd be crossing a line even Eda wouldn't tread for Inner Luz to start crying, scared of what they're becoming.
  • Back with Skara and Bo, the latter is angrily crying and demanding Skara (who's trying to get through to her) fight so she can feel her pain: she reluctantly does so and is backed into a corner. As a result, Skara accepts whatever punishment Bo deems deserving saying she has it coming before collapsing on her knees in tears. Luckily, Bo accepts her apology.
    • The part Skara says hurts the most when Bo asks her? Her heart.
  • Although she puts Craig in his place, Lilith saw Luz's duel too similar to the one she had with Eda when they were kids.
  • The second she finds Luz's med room and sees she's awake, Amity begins crying into her shoulder feeling relieved Luz is alright but terrified and useless for being unable to help her.
  • A while later, Amity tells Luz what her mother said, calling Luz her best friend and crying at the thought of losing her. It ends up doubling as heartwarming because of this and the ensuing comforting hug.
  • Boscha did not have a good day. With her duel against Luz ending in a tie and thus, a hollow victory, Amity ending their friendship, Skara standing up to her, and her mothers being disappointed that she failed to get her revenge, she's left in tearful anger.
  • As for Luz, she's worried about her condition and is not only afraid of herself, but of how Eda will take it.

Chapter 23: Doctor's Visit and Party Incidents
  • Luz is convinced she's been cursed and fears the possibility that Eda somehow infected her. It's similar to that of a hereditary disease.
  • At Dog's party, Skara attempts to bring up the issue of the knife only for Amity to tell her she can't help.
  • While looking around Cat's family pictures, Amity begins thinking she was probably too dismissive towards Skara but before she can do anything about it, she ends up at the mercy of the same muggers who jumped her before. They accuse her of ratting out their accomplices and decide to kidnap her, but not before cutting her face. Thankfully Luz shows up but by the time she finishes taking care of them, Amity's in shock and has to be taken home.
  • Although he's loyal to his "Uncle" Belos, Hunter feels guilty for lying to Luz about who he really is since they're friends and he wants to help cure her condition.

    Chapter 24: Human Date
  • After asking Amity out, Luz stresses over making sure things go smoothly which briefly causes her to grow scales. Then Eda takes her to get her hair done and pick out her outfit, which makes her feel more pressured. All this can easily mirror any real life attempt at having a perfect date.
  • After Mabel says being in the parade looks fun, Pacifica rants how to her, it's just being dragged to publicity events to promote her family's accomplishments while watching everyone else have fun. It's plain to see how miserable she is.
  • Overhearing Farmer Sprott and Rev. Jones' conversation where the former wants to expose the Clawthornes as witches and burn them while the latter is disgusted with hearing that the "heathen known as Clawthorne" returned with a "tramp" startled Amity with how they saw them, giving her the first glimpse of the prejudice the human world has.
  • In the last scene, Amity sees Robbie getting kidnapped by the Blind Eye Society which hits her Trauma Button and causes her to use magic to keep them at bay. This makes them back off and escape but leaves her a quivering mess until the beginning of the next chapter.

Chapter 25: Good from the Bad
  • After getting kidnapped, on top of all the other messed up situations he's been in this summer (ghost hauntings, living video game characters trying to kill him, monster clowns pelting him with pies), Robbie decides he's had enough of Gravity Falls and chooses to leave. He also makes the decision of ending things between him and Wendy, who respects and supports him regardless of the fact that for once she got dumped.
    • Despite maintaining her usual stoic demeanor, Tambry struggles to say goodbye to Robbie. If you know how their relationship goes in canon, you know how hard it really is for her.
  • After telling Amity why Rev. Jones doesn't like her, Luz explains the prejudice the human world has, how she'd be an outcast even if she was raised in it and that she wouldn't be fully accepted in either world.
  • Rev. Jones got what he deserved, but being discovered to have had dementia just after being removed from the Blind Eye Society can make a guy pity him.
  • Mirroring "Through The Looking Glass Ruins", Luz panics after (cheek) kissing Amity while calling herself stupid and then when Amity pulls her in for an actual kiss, both girls freeze up on the spot as soon as it's done. It's clear neither of them knows how to respond properly which will make things awkward between them.

    Chapter 26: Back to Hexside
  • The chapter's song, which really emphasizes the dread and depression the students are feeling now that the new semester has begun. It really brings the mood down, even for a scenario that reflects how kids feel in real life when it's time to go back to school.
    • Once the song ends, Luz and Amity (who haven't spoken to each other since their date) end up face to face with each other. Despite wanting to talk about the kiss, they're too embarrassed to do so and agree to talk later.
  • The assembly the students attend includes a demonstration for what would happen should they break the newly established curfew and are cornered by a mugger. It ends up being horribly graphic much to everyone's discomfort, especially Amity's.
    • Before the demo, it's revealed that including Amity and Levi, 19 students were confirmed to have been mugged with Levi being one of 13 who were hospitalized.
  • Near the end of the day, Luz attempts to talk to Willow but suddenly has a flashback to a point in the past where she accidentally cut Willow's face during one of her episodes and ran away. It makes Luz uneasy to talk and she leaves once Willow notices her.
  • How does the chapter end? With The Reveal that Amity has been spying on Eda and Luz for Lilith! It's clear what would happen if they find out...

    Chapter 27: Maternal Aspiration
  • As shown via Flashback, Lilith convinced Amity to spy on her sister and niece to make up for missing the witch's duel and in exchange, she would guarantee Amity a future in the Emperor's Coven. Although she had a choice to say no, Amity agrees.
    • Remember, this is Amity we're talking about. As in, the girl who (at the time) just saw one of her muggers and ran off because she got scared. Taking this into consideration, Lilith had unknowingly put her own desires over her goddaughter's feelings.
    • There's also the fact that it was mentioned that Lilith's approval meant everything to Amity, and despite not wanting to decieve Luz and Eda or risk their safety, she wanted to prove her worth. It gets harder when it's later revealed that Amity may see Lilith as more of a mother to her than Odalia, even counting the fact that she confided her mugging to Lilith.
    • It's also shown that because Lilith's been around more often, she witnessed Amity kissing Luz. She reminds her of their agreement and tells her that with how fast their relationship's moving, it'll make Luz prematurely learning the truth all the more heartbreaking as she'll see it as betrayal.
    • Unfortunately, this means that the true reason Lilith blackmailed Odalia into letting Amity continue being friends with Luz was so she wouldn't lose her inside connection.
  • It seems that even though Amity wants to attend Luz's séance to meet her birth mother, she's afraid to since it means having to confront the awkwardness between them. It's because she's so used to her future being planned out for her, not knowing the outcome terrifies her. Which is why it's a good thing Puck remended her it's still her choice.
    • Speaking of Puck, he mentions he's helping her because he also wants to make up for all the bad things he's done in the past. He doesn't elaborate on any of them, but the guilt is there.
  • Before the séance begins, Luz confides to Eda that she's worried about what her human mother will think of the life she has now, which includes being a delinquent and liking a girl. Eda has to point out she's been cared for all this time.
  • Doubles as heartwarming: the séance ends with Luz and Camila in tears over not having more time to talk, primarily because this is the first time in 14 years that they've seen each other.
  • Lilith has come to distrust Belos because he kept Luz's existence from her and she doesn't know who she can trust anymore.
    • While talking with Raine, she admits she doesn't think she'd make a good parent, not even being close to her goddaughter until recently.
  • Gus tells Luz she's lucky to have a mother who cares so much for her, as he doubts his ever did.

    Chapter 28: Regretful Decisions
  • You remember the incident King felt guilty about back in Chapter 5? A month after the slayground incident, the little demon (who wished he could've been there to protect Luz) suggested she drink a juice that could potentially give her magic. Unfortunately, said juice was actually Eda's elixir and Luz fell unconscious, needing to get her stomach pumped. King never forgot how mad Eda was when she discovered what he did and remembering it too much eventually causes him to break down crying from the guilt.
    • What added on to the guilt was his belief that with Luz attempting to turn over a new leaf and gaining friends and a girlfriend, she won't need him in her life anymore and he'll only be in the way.
  • Take note of how uncomfortable Luz gets when King brings up the time they conned a rich kid, because it'll be important later.
  • Tibbles may be a Jerkass but like Mattholomule, he suffers at Puck's hands, i.e. being shrunken and attacked by the tiny animals in his tent of tiny terrors: countered by the fact that he actually did deserve it.
  • It's officially confirmed that Luz hasn't told Gus about the darker facts of the human realm because she's worried he'll become afraid of her if she did.
  • Despite his good intentions, Puck regrets causing the pixie infestation when he learns Luz was accused of doing so.
  • As it turns out, Amity has been sworn to secrecy in regards to her agreement with Lilith by the everlasting oath, so she can't tell Luz the truth even if she wanted to.

    Chapter 29: I'm Fine Memories
  • Following the cliffhanger last chapter, Amity's been trapped within her mind while her inner self has taken her place. It's later shown that her current predicament is due to a being known as the Inner Demon manipulating her inner self from within the mindscape, feeding off her emotional distress and planning to do so until there's no part of her left.
  • Skara tells her mother, Calypso, about the knife and she suggests a person could use it to inflict Self-Harm, causing Skara to worry that's what Amity is using it for.
  • The reason why Luz had injured Willow years ago was because she was defending her from a bunch of older girls who were picking on Willow. Upon seeing Willow's scratch and how much blood was on her hands, Luz ran off in shock. In the present, Luz questions why Willow remained friends with her despite that and is terrified that if she loses control in her alternate form, she'll risk attacking her friends or Amity.
  • Speaking of whom, Amity's inner self decides to eliminate her feelings for Luz by destroying the memory of their first kiss. Despite Skara's attempt to stop her, she succeeds but realizes she screwed up when the fire spreads to the other memories that were pulled out. As a result, Amity falls unconscious and further into the Inner Demon's grasp.

    Chapter 30: Understanding Amity
  • While Amity is being checked over, a worried Emira starts to lay into a guilt-ridden Skara (who's ready to burst into tears) for not stopping her sooner. As things start to boil, Luz (also on the verge of tears) has to put a stop to it while trying to keep herself together.
  • As time passes in the Owl House, Skara slowly comes to realize that she wasn't as close with Amity as she believed and assumes she never even liked her or the other girls they hang out with (barring Boscha). It gets to the point that she theorizes Amity and Luz made a suicide pact and Luz is just as depressed, which Eda actually starts to believe and causes both of them to become blubbering messes.
  • As it turns out, Luz first met Amity when she conned her out of her allowance during a Staged Pedestrian Accident. It may be one of Amity's good memories, but Luz is disappointed in herself for letting it happen, mainly because they're dating now.
  • While Luz and Willow are fixing Amity's memories, the Inner Demon's been draining her life force while forcing her to relive the memory she regrets the most: the moment she ended her friendship with Willow. By the time the girls find them, Amity looks like she's been sucked dry.
  • Alador doesn't have a good relationship with his parents as they gave up on trying to understand him in his youth.
  • After learning about everything about Amity's recent problems, Odalia retreats to her room to cry in private so as to not show weakness in front of her family: she also begins to see that she may have pushed her little girl too far.

Chapter 31: Have A Little Hex With My Friends
  • While at Skara's birthday party, Amity is nervously remembering the last party she attended. At the same time, Luz is feeling guilty about her mugging believing she's at fault.
  • Calypso's drinking prevents her from attending the party. She expresses her belief in herself being a terrible parent and seems to constantly worry about Skara turning out like her father. It's not revealed what inner demons Slasher faced in the past, but the whole Brooke family is aware of them.
  • Luz has been trying to figure out a way to pay back Amity for scamming her as kids, and the twins telling her she owes her much more than she originally swindled doesn't help. They were punking her, but she didn't know that.
  • Prior to Luz's enrollment at Hexside, Viney recieved love letters from a secret admirer that turned out to be a prank by some beast-keeping students. Her retribution is part of why she got thrown in the Detention track and it's also why she isn't looking into her current secret admirer: she doesn't want to have that experience again.
  • Admit it, you felt sorry for Mattholomule when Simon didn't remember him and for Eda when she built herself up for an interview with Gus only to learn he wanted to do it with Dipper.
  • Willow always attended Grom just to hang out with Gus, but since he's got a date this year, she sadly states there isn't anyone eager to go with the "Half-a-Witch". Skara, Amelia and Cat all exchange a look of regret for having a hand in that.
    • At the same time, Boscha is watching the group from a distance but chooses not to antagonize them seemingly conflicted.
  • John de Plume is one of the culprits the Monster Fighters Club catches. He's fallen a long way from grace since his dealings with Piniet.
  • Turns out even after being inspired by Amity taking a chance with Luz, Emira still isn't confident enough to tell Viney how she feels about her.

Chapter 32: Grom: The Musical (Part 1)
  • When Lilith first appears, she's described as lonely and miserable. It's because it's the day of Grom, (which brings back some bad memories) even saying whoever gets picked to face the beast has her sympathy.
    • It's soon shown that Lilith had been chosen for Grom queen back in her day and it didn't turn out well for her.
  • Upon being selected for Grom queen, Luz initially takes it in stride even when Amity mentions Grom could use her memories of the slayground incident against her. Then all that confidence melts away when she learns Eda is chaperoning, because she was relying on using her alternate form in the fight and now she can't without revealing it to her.
  • After Amity discovers her mother was once Lilith's girlfriend, Odalia explains how they began to drift apart after joining their respective covens and eventually had to break up. She adds that their relationship ended as all young love ended: the spark between them faded.
  • Boscha confronts Nicole for nominating Luz for Grom queen pointing out that if she fails and Grom escapes, the rest of the school will suffer. Nicole only cares about the fact that everyone will know Luz will be to blame, showing she values revenge over everyone's safety, possibly even her daughter's.
  • After giving it a lot of thought, Amity decides to take Luz's place in fighting Grom: Luz quickly protests due to how dangerously stupid it is for Amity to face all of her fears fueled by her trauma just to help her. Amity adds that it's also to repay her for being unable to help at the exams, feeling she'll let her down again if she doesn't.
    • On top of that when Luz tells her she wanted to ask her to Grom as her date, Amity admits that while she does want to go as girlfriends, she's worried about her mother finding out on top of her possibly repeating what she said about her and Lilith happening to them.

Chapter 33: Grom: The Musical (Part 2)
  • During a flashback, Eda reveals to Raine that the reason she wants to join the Emperor's Coven is because she's afraid she and Lilith will fall out of touch if they're separated. Or worse, if something happens to Lilith and she wasn't there to help, Eda will regret it.
    • It's then revealed that the reason Lilith despises Grom so much is because Eda stepped in to fight when she lost her nerve and defeated it single-handedly, despite her saying she had faith in her. Lilith's worst fear wasn't anything Grom changed into: it's living her life stuck in Eda's shadow, with her stealing the spotlight.
  • She may have started off strong for the first portion of the battle, but Amity's soon overwhelmed by Grom when it takes the form of Luz being injured by her. It's only a matter of seconds before a few more transformations cause her to collapse to her knees in tears, completely overwhelmed.
  • Eda is left confused and worried after seeing how secretive Luz was being when she opted out of fighting Grom, fearing she was losing touch with her.
  • The Blight twins nearly go home believing they've been stood up when Viney crashes down in front of them, having been chasing a runaway Puddles and fearing Emira doesn't want to see her again for showing up too late. While they clear the air and dance, Edric sadly sends a text to his date who had to take care of something that came up. It turns out that Ed's secret boyfriend is Hunter, who's greatly disappointed that he broke his promise to attend.
  • As Boscha decides to leave for home, she hears someone calling her "Cha-ka" which is the nickname her older brother, Boris, uses. She then flashes back to the night he left before wiping away her tears and heading for the exit.
  • Things end with Puck outside Blight Manor telling Amity to enjoy things now, because the worst is yet to come.

    Chapter 34: Domino Effect
  • Seeing Lilith hasn't tried to connect with Luz at all yet is still consulting with her, Amity tells her godmother about how she doesn't see any of her extended family at all as Geist only visits on birthdays and holidays, Odalia's parents are dead and Alador cut ties with his. She advises Lilith to talk with her niece since she doesn't know what to make of her.
  • After Eda discovers Luz is friends with Puck, she decides to tell her why the fae are banned from entering the Boiling Isles. The story of the Pied Piper actually happened there and because of the witches who refused to honor their deal with him for exterminating the colo colos, he kidnapped an entire generation of child witches. A few more incidents happened before Belos came to power, and Eda warns Luz to be careful because since Puck was banished, he must have done terrible things.
  • Once Odalia discovers Amity's dating Luz, her first instinct is to confront her the second she got home. However, when Amity tells her she won't apologize for it, she thinks back to how she could have lost Amity had it not been for Luz and the fear and concern that came with it.
  • Edric decides to meet Hunter before going to school: the former asks if the latter's ashamed of him for being too cool and Hunter responds it should be the other way around since he's convinced most people wouldn't date a powerless witch. Edric hopes to introduce Hunter to his loved ones when he's not busy, then Hunter is called back to work which doesn't help his case. Both boys are shown as Insecure Love Interests who want to make it work, but Hunter's double life prevents them from taking the next step.
  • Anyone in the past who won a game due to catching the Rusty Smidge while facing Luz on the opposite team had to endure her wrath, and she'd take out her fury on not just the person who caught it but everyone on the whole field. Poor Tom had to work as a volunteer referee twice at the same time Luz joined two of those teams and the last time, he was left in pain because Luz bit him.
  • During the Grudgby game, Puck decides to mess with Boscha as payback for beating Luz at the exams. He ends up activating a spike that cuts her face, nearly taking her eye out and when Luz and Amity learn about it, Luz chews him out and ends their friendship telling him Eda was right to warn her. Once the girls leave, the devastated fae leaves.
    • Even worse, when the girls try to explain what happened to Boscha, she assumes they caused her injuries as petty revenge despite her not messing with anyone recently and swears to expose them as the liars she believes they are.
  • The second Bria finds Mattholomule, she decides to "pass on a message" due to Luz beating up a few Glandus students a while back. He knows what she really means.

    Chapter 35: To Serve
  • Lilith decides to spend time with Luz and takes her to a café to talk. Things start off well at first, but Lilith starts to lean into how miserable it is to be on opposing sides with Eda. When Luz suggests she just leave the Emperor's Coven, things start to escalate until Lilith makes the mistake of telling Luz she can't be a witch and doesn't belong in the demon realm. A hurt Luz sees her as another adult who will never believe in her and leaves in disappointment, while Lilith realizes too late what she just said.
    • During her tirade, Luz reveals that she met Gwendolyn who never acknowledged her existence. Given Gwen's established personality, it's easy to see why.
  • Gus, Bo and Elliot attempt to find Mattholomule after the game ends only for him to send Bo a text saying he left with an old friend who wanted to catch up. With how worried Bo had been and the position Matt was last seen in, imagine her concern had she known what would really happen.
  • Puck is busy kicking himself for what he did to Boscha while his shadow tells him he's better off without friends since he enjoys hurting others. Then enters Anu Bist, who's been told by the Order to capture the fae. And he had been hoping to give Puck leniency until he saw what Puck did, forcing the two friends to fight. Ms. Traveler soon appears, tells Puck off for what he did, and to never return to Hexside again or she'll end him herself.
  • Dolly gives Boscha one of Amity's undamaged memory photos that she saved after the incident with the Inner Demon, telling her it's how they'll pay her and Luz back. Boscha's too angered to listen to reason (AKA Ms. Traveler) and shows the memory to Nicole. It turns out to be of Amity making the deal of being Lilith's spy and mother and daughter decide to use it to destroy Amity's relationship with Luz with Boscha using the book of human facts she got from Vanz Ator to slander Luz and turn everyone at Hexside against her.
  • During their visit with the Weird Sisters, Emperor Belos has them show Hunter the reason he's been preparing for the Day of Unity: to prevent a catastrophic event that will have the Boiling Isles engulfed in flames, civilians mercilessly killed and strange creatures led by one with yellow eyes being the cause of it all. The vision nearly sends Hunter into a panic attack, and Belos tells him in order to prevent it and save everyone, they need to go through with their efforts with Hunter needing to take his uncle's place should he not live to see it all pay off.
    • It's also revealed that Belos is Philip Wittebane, and that he and his brother William ended up in the Boiling Isles with no knowledge of their true origin. As such, the name "Wittebane" means nothing to Belos.
  • After what happened with Luz, Lilith is called to the castle and is confronted by Belos, who reveals he knows everything about her using Amity as a spy, trying to get closer to Luz and attempting to hide her condition from him. He goes on saying he understands why she did it, all while she's frozen in fear, before giving her an ultimatum: bring in Eda and Luz before sunset the next day or he'll send someone else to do it. After Belos leaves, a sickened Lilith proceeds to puke in a nearby flowerpot knowing she can't fail again.
  • When Amity leaves the Owl House for the night due to Lilith calling her to tell her what she just learned, King (who overheard their call) follows her and learns about Amity spying on them. He sneaks away knowing that this news will crush Luz.
  • The chapter ends with the Weird Sisters acknowledging things are about to go downhill, predicting heartbreak, a deal and death.

    Chapter 36: Everything's Gone Wrong
  • Opening on the conversation started between godmother and goddaughter, Lilith admits what she said to Luz which angers Amity, who's come to realize that Lilith's only been spending time with her because she's getting something out of it. Things heat up until Lilith reveals she revoked the everlasting oath preventing Amity from telling Luz the truth in her sleep, making her even more furious that she's been keeping this hidden for no reason. Feeling manipulated, Amity tells Lilith to stay away from her and that she's going to to reveal everything the next day.
  • When King returns home and reveals what he learned to everyone, Luz believes he's lying because he's still jealous Luz is spending more time with Amity. They start to argue and Luz calls him delusional, nearly revealing how Eda truly found him before going to spend the night at Willow's.
  • On the way to school, Viney mentions that Jerbo's not coming in because he's on the family ski trip Barcus predicted. He was also really nervous when he left.
  • Boscha's plan for revenge begins with her, Dolly and Tyler putting up flyers on human facts all over Hexside with only one fact on it: witch hunting. Knowing Luz would come for her, Boscha waits in Principal Bump's office with a projector containing the memory photo and turns on the P.A. system so the whole school can hear everything while Luz watches. By the time Amity reaches them, the projection has ended and Luz is shedding Broken Tears causing her to dump Amity and tell her to enjoy being in the Emperor's Coven before running away, heartbroken.
  • At the same time, Lilith goes to the Owl House to explain what Belos told her and tells Eda to send Luz to the human realm now. Eda proceeds to question Lilith about her deal with Amity and once she recieves confirmation, she berates Lilith for using someone who already suffered so much even after learning of her first mugging; when Lilith proceeds to beg for her to take her advice, Eda disowns her as her family, tells her to stay away from the kids under the threat of killing her herself and has Hooty throw her out. Her final say on the matter deals a heavy blow to Lilith.
Eda: "Luz, King, even Hooty are my family. You, on the other hand... are not."
    • What's worse, the stress causes Eda's curse to start flaring up while Lilith tells Hooty to advise Eda that's she'll have to come back with reinforcements.
  • After Amity forgoes chastising Boscha to search for Luz, a vivid Skara takes her place calling Boscha a hypocrite for her stance against liars and tells her that what she did was so despicable, Skara has officially given up on staying friends with her and walks off having to be comforted by Amelia and Cat. To see Skara of all people get so angry is devastating, as she really believed they could still be friends. And from Boscha's reaction, she knows it.
Skara: Don't pretend that you never lie when it suits you, because I've put up with you longer than anyone else in this school has and I can call you out on your shit! You may be honest about what a ^&*% you are, but when you preach about exposing liars… you're a hypocrite.
    Boscha: Skara... I-
Skara: (teary-eyed) FUCK OFF! I wanted to give you a chance, I wanted us to still be friends despite our falling out and how you treated people like Willow. You may have thought you were exposing Amity and Luz today, but you also exposed yourself for the horrible little witch that you are. After today, I want nothing more to do with you.
  • With Luz long gone, Amity begins breaking down pushing Edric and Emira away when they try to comfort her and telling them to leave her to die. Shocked, the twins realize that had they gone through with stealing her diary and exposing her secrets, this would have been the outcome.
    • What's worse, Amity even pushes Willow away and Gus (who came with Willow) also loses his usual happiness and angrily tells the already suffering Blight sibling off for decieving his best friend. Willow intervening and sending him off to class was the best choice for him at that moment.
  • Luz is so angry that the anxiety technique isn't working anymore. Not to mention when she returns home, she finds Eda has transformed and the elixirs aren't working.
  • Simon is just as disappointed in Boscha for what she did as Skara, even if he doesn't know why she did it. He really never saw this side of her until now.
  • Lilith's comeuppance isn't over yet: when she returns to Blight Manor, she finds her things in front of the door and Odalia seething after Amity told her everything when the kids returned and vituperates her on the matter. It doesn't help that Lilith attempts to tell the matriarch Amity was more comfortable with her, which earns her a third calling out about not going back on the deal when she had so many chances to. Odalia tells Lilith that's she lost all respect for her and she's no longer welcome in her home before slamming the door on her. In less than a day, Lilith's secrets caused her to lose all of her family.
  • As punishment for her actions, Boscha is stripped of her track status, removed from the grudgby team, forbidden from playing sports on school grounds and suspended for a week to be placed in the detention track when she returns, with the other option being expulsion. Nicole takes the first one, with Boscha being left shocked that despite supposedly winning, she still lost big time.
  • Back with Amity, she solidifies her disconnection from Lilith by burning her EC poster declaring her hatred for her former mentor.
  • After they tell each other everything about the curse and Lilith, Eda tells Luz she might have to go to the human world with King while she stays behind as the curse may take over permanently. This latest bit of bad news causes Luz's condition to start up, sprouting claws and clues Eda, King and Hooty in on it, which causes her to run away.
    • Luz ends up lost in the Forest of Fear, where travelers' negative thoughts and emotions are increased the longer they stay there until they turn to trees and become part of the forest.

Chapter 37: The Forest of Fear
  • Puck is busy giving himself a "Reason You Suck" Speech because his actions against Boscha, along with all of his other victims, caused him to fail the person he promised to do good for. He soon gets another speech from what appears to be Amity, who scolds him for being a bad friend before revealing "herself" as the Greater Basilisk.
  • When Viney, Barcus and the Cerberus sisters check up on Gus during lunch, he mentions Elliot quitting the H.A.S. after he read the "human facts" list. He also adds that he refuses to forgive Amity (whose reputation has been damaged far worse than Luz's) for hurting his friend.
  • Speaking of Luz, she's being forced to face all her past trauma as well as her worst fears courtesy of the Inner Demon, who points out that unlike Amity, she's all alone with no one to save her.
    • Luz is initially able to fend off the illusions of her friends and family since she knows they're not real. However the illusion of Amity gets to her, telling her she never belonged in the demon realm and never should've tried so hard to be a witch because her desperation to prove herself is pathetic. Amity's deceit hurt Luz the most, and it's along with a lifetime of hardship that's causing her to succumb to the Forest's effects.
  • When Alador checks on Amity, she tells him that even though she doesn't mean to, she hurts everyone close to her using Willow and Skara as examples along with Luz.
    • Alador admits he can't relate to his daughter's situation because he had no one until Odalia.
  • Athena isn't pleased to learn what her wife and daughter have done as it means Boscha no longer has a solid future (at least to her). When Odalia comes to beat the living crap out of Nicole, Athena attempts to run interference only for Odalia to tell her that maybe if she had done something for a change, none of this would have happened.
    • As for Boscha, she remains quiet the whole time, even when Odalia tells her she's just as horrible as Nicole.
  • Puck came really close to dying at the Greater Basilisk's hands, and he would have too had it not been for Jerbo.
  • Right after Lilith saves Luz from the Forest of Fear, she plans on taking her to the human world only for the Golden Guard to appear and reveal that she cursed Eda to undermine Luz's trust even more. Once Luz is restrained, GG fights Lilith as he's been ordered to bring Luz in: he ends the fight by killing Lilith, much to Luz's horror before he takes her away.
    • Things get worse when Eda tries to save Luz; the Golden Guard knows he can't beat Eda, so he wears her out long enough for her curse to take over and turn her into the owl beast allowing the Emperor's Coven to take her in.
    • What's more, while the rest of the guards congratulate him for his success, Hunter feels incredibly guilty for what he's done, no matter how much he tries to justify it.
  • After what Odalia said, Athena leaves to clear her head as Boscha (feeling empty inside) can only watch.

    Chapter 38: The Reveal
  • The conversations between Luz, Eda, Emperor Belos and the Golden Guard are chock full of this:
    • Hunter's already feeling guilty for what he did to Lilith, and Luz consistently bringing it up doesn't help. He's just lucky she can't see his face or the looks of guilt he has.
    • When Eda learns of Lilith's death, she initially denies it until Luz confirms it. She also believes Belos is lying when he claims that Lilith cursed her; when Belos shows her her memory of the moment it happened, Eda starts to cry.
    • Then when Belos questions Eda where the portal key is, Luz confesses she swiped it when she ran off and got so upset that she was gonna be sent away, she threw it into a lake in the Forest of Fear: she really didn't want be seperated from Eda. This results in Belos sentencing Luz and Eda to execution for not swearing allegiance to him...
    • ...and once the Clawthornes are taken away, Hunter throws off his mask and lashes out at Belos for breaking his promise to help Luz. Hunter already betrayed her by bringing her in, but he didn't want to lose the first real friend he ever had.
  • After Kikimora announces to the Isles that Luz and Eda will be petrified, several reactions are shown starting with a horrified Gus, Willow and Viney.
    • Unlike Nicole, who's delighted with the announcement, Boscha is shocked and realizes she's part of the reason it's happened. She's also hit by the realizations that everything she's done has ruined her chances at winning her friends back, that Luz's blood will be on her hands, and that Nicole only cared about satisfying her ego than helping Boscha with her problems.
    • King doesn't take the news of losing his family any better, so he and Puck agree to team up and save them. Puck's shadow, on the other hand, tries to stop him by reminding him Luz isn't his friend anymore and accidentally mentions Wendy, the person Puck made his promise to. Puck realizes his shadow has been keeping the truth hidden from him and banishes it forever, much to its sadness.
    • The one who's most devastated by the announcement is naturally Amity, who completely shuts down as Luz and Eda have done so much for her and now they're about to die. This leads to a breakdown where she destroys a good portion of her room and screams nothing matters anymore. Luckily, Puck arrives and helps calm her down.
      • Seeing her so broken terrified Odalia and the twins, as their attempts to get her to talk to them don't get a single response out of her before she heads to her room.
  • Anu Bist tries to recruit Ms. Traveler to his team effort to save Luz and Eda, but she refuses not wanting to interfere because all of her past attempts at doing so caused more problems than solved them.
  • After calming Amity down, Puck reveals to her his past as Peter Pan, an alias he took up when he was banished from the fae homeworld by Oberon, his abusive stepfather. In Neverland, he was a royal jerk until he met Wendy Darling and made his promise while she was on her deathbed the last time he visited her. He never really saw what she saw in him until now.
  • Soon after Amity and Puck leave Blight Manor, Odalia becomes worried that her daughter ran away because of everything.

     Chapter 39: Understanding Lilith
  • The whole chapter is pretty much a dedication to all the hardships and sacrifices Lilith made to get to where she is today as she watches the memories of all her mistakes and regrets.
  • It turns out that Odalia was the reason Lilith got the idea to curse Eda so Lilith could join the Emperor's Coven. Despite her points about Eda causing trouble, Odalia played a hand in ruining Eda's life, though it doesn't changed the fact that Lilith still took her advice.
  • Lilith's breakup with Odalia is also shown; even though they remained professional and deemed it necessary for the sake of their careers, it still left Lilith in tears.
  • After capturing Eda years later, Lilith learns from her that the sign-up sheet for EC tryouts was blank so the sisters didn't have to fight each other. What's more, Eda refuses to allow Belos to cure her since she knows she'll be indebted to him. All this makes Lilith feel even more guilty.
  • Not long after Eda became the Owl Lady, Lilith met and developed a relationship with Stanford Pines after he ended up in the Boiling Isles. However when Ford decided to leave due to distrust in Belos (seeing too much of Bill Cipher in him) and asked Lilith to come with him, she refused believing Belos wouldn't uphold his end of their deal to cure Eda. As a result, Ford knocked her out and escaped meaning Lilith put her goals over another relationship.
  • When the memories ends, Lilith is chewed out by all of the illusions of those she wronged or left behind (several forms of Eda, Luz, Amity, Ford and Odalia) all ganging up on her for the trouble she caused until she's on her knees crying in regret.
  • Having found Lilith near dead with a hole in her stomach, it's hard to imagine how terrified Amity must have been to see her in that state, even with what Lilith had done still fresh in her mind.

    Chapter 40: The Rescue
  • As Luz and Eda are brought to the Conformatorium, Eda reveals that she was afraid she was holding Luz back and would've sent her away if it meant she'd be safe and better off. Luz proceeds to reveal that she's proud to be Eda's kid and wanted her to be around to see her life unfold, but fears none of it will happen now. Once they arrive, Eda succumbs to the Owl Beast once more and Luz can only watch helplessly as she's restrained.
  • As Amity, King and Lilith sneak into the Conformatorium, Amity comes across the petrified wild witches and asks Lilith if they commited other crimes besides not joining a coven. After Lilith gives an answer, Amity questions if she would suffer this fate if she didn't join one and Lilith admits she always turned a blind eye justifying it, knowing she can't anymore.
  • Upon finding Luz and Eda, Amity works to free them only for Luz (upset that Amity's seeing her in mid-transformation) to tell her to escape now or she'll ruin her future. Hearing this, Amity breaks down cursing the coven system while apologizing for ever lying to Luz. This leads to them sharing one Last Kiss before the platform the Clawthornes' cages are on, both girls shedding tears from being separated again.
  • Boscha was just about to turn off her crystal ball so she couldn't watch the petrification ceremony only to see Puck causing chaos and have a My God, What Have I Done? moment realizing Luz was telling the truth about the fae.
  • With Kikimora and Warden Wrath locked up, Webstor is forced to petrify Luz and Eda.
  • During Luz's Badass Boast, Mattholomule is shown to be one of the people watching the ceremony. Turns out Bria left him bruised and with a black eye.
  • Cornering Amity after getting her alone, Belos begins trying to convince her not to go through with freeing the Clawthornes while using illusions of her trauma and fears to undermine her confidence. When she beats it, he simply traps her and tells her he stopped her from being branded a wild witch unable to return to her family and intending to lock her up until she decides to join him.
  • Even though Webstor stood his ground and refuses to petrify the Clawthornes, he's still captured and taken away to an unknown fate.
  • Amity uses Phil (her abomination) to block the petrification beam. Just before he becomes a statue, Phil gives a thumbs-up to Amity and Luz, who he dubs his surrogate mothers: his only moment of sentience and it's completely bittersweet in every sense of the word.
  • Given her reaction, there's no doubt Odalia is feeling sheer terror from seeing Amity at the ceremony live on the news.
  • Not only is Anu Bist critically injured at Belos' hands, Puck is fatally stabbed by him as well. Luz and Amity can only watch in sadness as their friend accepts his fate. Even worse, Luz never got the chance to make up with Puck and knows Hooty won't take the news well, either.
  • After the Clawthornes and Amity escape and return to the Owl House, they still have to accept a few hard truths:
    • Even though Luz makes up with King for calling him delusional, she still feels guilty about having to hide his true origins from him.
    • Amity knows that what Luz and Belos said are true: because of her involvement in the breakout, she's a criminal now and she can't risk returning home without being arrested.

    Epilogue
  • In Gravity Falls, Dipper tries to contact Luz but can't get ahold of her. Fearing something's wrong, he prepares to summon Bill; that's how concerned and desperate he is.
  • Hunter learns that while Emperor Belos would have spared Luz, he was more than willing to sacrifice Eda for his plans to succeed.
  • Boscha, brooding over the day's events, comes across Tom Lucitor who's sleeping in an alleyway. Tom reveals that he's been homeless for a long time, having lost his parents. One can only guess for the time being how he ended up in this state.
  • Anu Bist turns out to have escaped the Emperor's castle, but is severely bleeding when he reaches Vanz Ator's shop needing his lamp to recover.
  • The cherry on top of the book's final depressing moments, The Reveal of how Camila died. Lilith had acquired dimensional scissors to try and find Eda on Earth. She popped up on a road and when Camila's car was approaching, she fired at it and made it run off the road. Lilith discovers this from the newspaper article Luz got from Dipper and is devastated. She caused another problem and knows that if it wasn't for her, Luz never would've been raised in the Boiling Isles... none of this would have ever happened. It ends the whole book on a sour note.
