Tear Jerker / Alphabet Lore

Who knew that a series based on the alphabet could be so sad?

  • G was tricked by F into killing P in "V", who was already mortally wounded by him, having G do a Skyward Scream. This counts as the Moral Event Horizon for F.
  • "W" includes a Guilt-Induced Nightmare for N, who imagines the letters C, O, W, A, R, and D forming into a copy of himself which implies he is a coward and shaming him for his failure to protect his friends or prevent the deaths of C and P. It's painfully clear that he's deeply hurt by his own weakness, both emotionally and physically, and the adverse consequences of it.
  • In stark contrast to the semi-comedic nature of almost every previous episode, F's Start of Darkness is portrayed in "nZ" in a tragic light with almost no humor whatsoever. Specifically, it is revealed to have been brought about by a combination of lowercase L and O's petty cruelty and the mob mentality of the other letters with the exception of G and P, who ignored F's plight while making out, and N, who was too afraid to defend him (pictured above). Only Q becomes aware of the disaster that will eventually occur as a result, but is too slow to warn anyone and can only reveal the truth after all is said and done. Even In-Universe, the other letters are understandably distraught by the damage their actions caused, and the planet-sized Z mourns for the entire debacle, unable to stop it from happening.
    • Notice how the punctuation gems come from F when the letters that end up obtaining them attack him. When does he cry out the orange semi-colon that N would get? When N doesn't defend him.
  • The very ending of "nZ" has the rejected young F climbing the mountain on his own. At the top of the mountain F looks down to see N, who can only turn away in shame as the letters around him spell out the word "coward". It ends by fading to show a grown up F, now bitter and resentful of all the other letters, and to drive home the tragedy the entire sequence is scored by a somber rendition of the "ABC" song.
  • Q as a character overall. He was born with a disability that alienates him from the rest of the cast, which is that he can't move very quickly. This causes him to be a lonely individual, and when he has important information to share, he can't tell anyone as he is too slow to gain anyone's attention. What's also worth noting is that Q failed to save M from being attacked by 2, again due to his disability. This shows that Q wants to be a helpful letter, but his form is making it very hard for him to do so.
  • The happy ending F and N receive in the epilogue is undone in Number Lore. F starts to relapse into his evil ways as he smiles and laughs watching L and O get hurt trying to save X, reminding N of the past. When N tries to go out and help, F tries to keep him from leaving, which soon leads to their gem breaking in half and N falling out of the mountain. By that point, N could do nothing but look back at F sulking and alone. And just when it couldn't get any worse... L decides to destroy the number ship and get back at F by throwing the ship at the mountain knowing full well that it would hit F, which horrifies N and even the other letters.
  • In Part 1 of "4", tears visibility stream from N's eyes and he resorts to using his gem to get to the mountain faster to rescue his dearest friend as green smoke fills the air. This also counts as the Moral Event Horizon for L, who laughs at this before the dirty looks from the other letters pressure him to begrudgingly go to save F.
  • In Part 2 of "4", F is shown to have survived because of his gem. N soon finds him and calls out to him. But by this point, F is no longer willing to trust him and descends into the crashed ship, to the dismay of N.
