- A few references to the grandfather of the CCG genre itself, Magic: The Gathering:
- The ultra-rare card Heart's Desire, which gives a player a big one-shot boost of action tokens for winning a face-off, is clearly inspired by the infamous Game-Breaker Black Lotus. The flavor text even quotes a pony named Lotus Blossom saying, "The black variety of this herb is particularly rare!"
- The flavor text for Pie Family Rock Farm makes a reference to the mechanically-similar card Howling Mine.
- One of Rarity's cards has the subtitle "Truly Outrageous", a shout out to a Hasbro property that has someone described as as "truly truly truly outrageous."
- The Dr. Hooves◊ (aka Time Turner)'s card has a subtitle "Unblinking", referring to the episode "Blink" and, more subtly, the Weeping Angels, which appeared in that episode.note The flavor text of the card includes an apparent nonsense string of letters, but since has been revealed to be a Sharky’s Vigenère cipher, using the key word "WHO", and translating to "BAD TIMBERWOLF", a play on both the MLP Timberwolf creatures and the Doctor Who arc word "Bad Wolf".
- The second Dr. Hooves card in the Canterlot Nights expansion is subtitled "Just In Time", and has flavor text alluding to the Doctor's original meetings with Amy Pony (though played here by Roseluck), about the Doctor being 12 years late, from "The Eleventh Hour".
- In addition, the pony speculated to be either the Fifth Doctor or the Master is named "Perfect Pace" with the title of "Time Master."
- The Brown Parasprite card's flavor text asks "What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen parasprite?".
- The flavor text of "Royal Guidance" includes the quote "With great power comes great responsibility."
- In the same vein, the flavor text of "Foal Free Press" has the quote "Pictures! I want pictures of ponies!"
- Some of the cards related to Pinkie Pie, such as "Ridiculous Outfit" quote from her "The Art of Fun".
- Other characters reference a "Monstrous Manual" written by Marey Hijinx.
- There is an event card titled Gotta Go Fast.
- One of the Problem cards is called "The Problem With Parasprites"
- Pipsqueak's card flavor text is a warning about having an eye poked out with a Red Rider sword.
- The flavor text on Snips' card is "Are you pondering what I'm pondering?". Snails' card, in reply, "I think so, Snips, but burlap chafes me so."
- "Joe's Doughnut Shop"'s flavor text, "Do you have any bear claws? - Cheese Sandwich", is a reference to "Albuquerque" by "Weird Al" Yankovic (who voiced Cheese Sandwich). Another card, "Critter Stampede" quotes Cheese Sandwich with another line from "Albequerque", "Hey, you've got weasels on your face."
- Photo Finish's card has a subtitle of "Picture Perfect Pony", Golden Harvest's card in the Canterlot Nights expansion is "Beyond Her Garden".
- "Purple Waters" flavor text is not-so-very subtle about it's nod to the band Pink Floyd. (Even adding the common surname for Roger Waters.
- Cloudchaser's card comments on how "Stormwalker" could have been a cool name; this is a nod to an error made in the "Elements of Harmony" book that named her as "Stormwalker", a leftover from the animation resources.
- "Fashion Upgrade", which uses a shot from "Inspiration Manifestation" where Rarity has magicked a fancy dress on Rainbow Dash while she's flying in mid-air, has flavor text calling to the fandom/G3 meme "Rainbow Dash always dresses in style".
- One troublemaker in the Crystal Games expansion is named "Biff", one of the mooks from "Daring Don't". The flavor text does not disappoint.
- A resource "Slick Shades", includes a rather appropriate Bulk Biceps quote: "YEEEEEEAAAAAAAH!"
- Daring Do's card has her flavor text "Medusas? Why'd it have to be medusas?"
- The Shining Armor/Princess Cadance Main card is subtitled "Fastball Special".
- "Chaos Capital of the World", showing the inverted Ponyville from "Return to Harmony", has flavor text of "Now this is a story about how Ponville got flipped and turned upside-down".
- Princess Celestia - Fair but Firm, has flavor text "Don't make her angry. You wouldn't like her when she's angry."
- The "Chocolate Rain" flavor text does not disappoint.
- A card that using the image of Discord dancing in underwear from the end of "Three's a Crowd" is unsurprisingly called "Risky Business".
- Sunset Shimmer's card in the Absolute Discord release is called "Clever Girl".
- The flavor text of Mr. Turnip pokes fun at another Hasbro property, Mr. Potato Head.
- Screwball - Topsy Turvy's flavor text is "I'M HELPING!".
- The unnamed "secret" card (numbered "-3" in Absolute Discord) is the Slenderpony that appeared for just a few frames in "Pinkie Apple Pie". Appropriately, its affect, a result of Chaos flipping, causes you to lose the game.
- It's A Twister has this for their flavor text: "Only you can prevent runaway twisters." - Smokey Air, Safety Mascot".
- "A Tiny Glass of Water", which uses the parody shot from "Three's a Crowd" of Discord, Twilight, and Cadance like the film poster for A New Hope, extends the parody with the flavor text "Great shot, one in a million! - Discord".
- It's a Trap! is a reference to Ackbar's famous line, and the flavor text quotes Leia's famous line in A New Hope.
- "Fleetfoot, Secret Sweatheart" implies that she has a secret crush on somepony in Ponyville, making nod to the Crash-Into Hello fantasy that she had with Big Macintosh from the comic series.
- The Utter Chaos Rule card "Say My Name" has its response in flavor text of "You're gosh-darn right!"
- The Utter Chaos Rule card "Bolt from the Blue" references the lyrics of Eiffle 65's "Blue (Da Ba Dee)".
- As in the episode "Tanks for the Memories" from which the art is based on, the Rainbow Dash, Total Grinch makes a nod to How the Grinch Stole Christmas!.
- "Sweetie Drops, Secret Agent" drops a few lines to James Bond.
- Princess Luna, The Sandmare's flavor text reference The Chordettes' hit Mister Sandman
- Discord, Dubious Intent makes a reference to a "evil interdimensional triangle wearing a top hat".
- The Battlesnakes card is a direct reference to Battletoads.
- Starlight Glimmer, Chrono Trigger
- The flavour text for Unplanned Guests, Very Animated haves Fluttershy sorry because Heero and Duo couldn't make it.
- Spike, to the Nines has Spike saying that he prefers garnet cupcakes to ruby and sapphire ones. (In Steven Universe, the character Garnet is a fusion of Ruby and Sapphire.)
- The flavor text for Top Marks has Twilight Sparkle essentially quoting Captain Picard from the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Timescape".
- Friends Forever has a card called "Hyper Beam". Is flavour text? "I am impressed that Starlight Glimmer didn't need a turn to recover after casting that spell!"
