Running Gag / The Dark Id

Go To

  • Random interludes made in Garry's Mod.
  • Often, if a major game character can be renamed, Id names him or her "Dongs", before reverting to the canonical name.
  • When confronted with foreshadowing of various subtlety: "I’m sure it’ll never become relevant in the future."
  • Plenty in the Xenogears LP:
    • Citan Uzuki being a dick who ducks out of boss fights, as well as explaining how he knows various things or how to perform/operate outlandish stuff as having learnt them in medical school.
    • Fei forgetting Billy's name.
    • Everyone thinking Fei's name is just a really bad alias (see Names to Run Away from Really Fast above).
    • Comparing Rico to Blanka.
    • Characters (usually Elly and/or Bart) bringing sandwiches when there is a long cutscene.
    • Grahf adding the word POWER!! into his speeches at every opportunity.
    • Fei's confidence that the next plot point can be cleared up with a good fighting tournament.
  • In Chrono Cross:
    • Kid constantly accusing Leena of being a sex-crazed country girl with low morals. It's a minor example since Kid disappears for a considerable portion of the game, but it's almost heartwarming when it comes back.
    • His utter disdain for certain characters, in particular Poshul, Korcha, and Stevenote .
    • Lynx temporarily doing CSI sunglasses one liners.
    • Serge/Lynx reminding ZOAH to "use his indoor voice".
  • In his LP of Dirge of Cerberus, he constantly draws attention to the fact Vincent's only real potential love interest who wasn't dead, gone, unavailable, or Yuffie was Shelke... who has the body of a nine year old...
  • Not appearing in the next update of Clock Tower 3: a clock tower. Named at one point as "a running gag I'd be glad to be rid of" and then eventually killed when a clock tower does indeed appear after the halfway point.
  • Resident Evil 4: Ada running into and killing very perverted Merchants. Played with a few times, such as when one of them merely offers to sell her weapons, simple as... only to get a bowgun bolt to the face when commenting on Ada's "black panties" afterwards, and again when Ada encounters the last Merchant and readies her gun. He resignedly tells her to Get It Over With... and she just throws an egg in his face, which he thanks her for.
  • Final Fantasy X has Tidus constantly asking "Is X is even a thing in Spira?" after mentioning something inspired by technology that probably isn't present in developmentally-stunted Spira (things like notepads, pizzas, Star Wars...).
  • The 3rd Birthday has "refreshing vulnerability" during any moments when the former badass Deadpan Snarker queen Aya Brea's Chickification rears its ugly head. The phrase itself is taken from a blurb from one of Aya's many uncharacteristically Stripperiffic alternate costumes. Specifically, the Swimwear costume.
  • Koudelka: Frequently implying that the horrors occurring in the game are more or less just a part of regular life in Wales.
  • In Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Yuri making references to his previous adventures with no context which confuses Karin to no end. He also has no head for geography, unaware of what or where countries are.
