Running Gag / Channel Awesome

Go To

As expected from a website made of different shows, Channel Awesome is chock full of them, with many that originated from the eponymous "That Guy" creeping into other shows.

  • The Nostalgia Critic will show a clip showing M. Bison from the Street Fighter movie shouting "OF COURSE!" every time he reveals that a character in the movie/cartoon he's reviewing wants to, you guessed it, Take Over the World.
    • That joke itself went meta in his review of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, when he told people that he was sick of it and that we wouldn't hear it again. The clip itself then shoehorns itself into the review, squashing the Critic in the process.
  • I was Frozen Today!
  • He will also show a clip showing William Shatner as James T. Kirk from the original Star Trek movie shouting "KHAAAAAAAANNN!!!!!" whenever there is someone with the word "Kahn" or "Khan" in his/her name (including Shere Khan, Shao Kahn) and James Caan.
  • Do you know what the pure essence of all comedy is?
  • ZUUL, MOTHERFUCKER, ZUUL!
  • Also in his Godzilla (1998) review, when he mispronounces the main character's last name, said character will appear in a clip and state his name, to which the Critic says "whatever". It's most ridiculous the last time, as the name the critic uses lasts for several seconds.
  • When he says the word "elephant", The Burger King appears. (This is a parody of the "I don't know!" *cue green glop* gag from You Can't Do That on Television.) The Critic will often take advantage of this by summoning the King intentionally in order to chase away any scene that refuses to end.
  • There's also the use of the "Wah Wah Wah Waaaaah" sound effect followed by him shrugging when a stupid line or action happens in the movie. If it happens multiple times in one review he shrugs higher every time.
    • In a Superman review, he uses this sound effect so much that the machine which makes it breaks.
  • TIMING!
  • A-CHUCK A-NORRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS!
  • "I'm acting!"
  • "...and Verminous Skumm wants to be ruler o-" *whack*
  • Whenever bubbles appear on a scene: "Fucking bubbles!"
  • Chick and Critic both like to use the Big-Lipped Alligator Moment.
  • Many of the reviewers dub chase scenes over with "Yakety Sax" from The Benny Hill Show.
  • "Unsubbing" and Minecraft penises in Video Games Awesome!.
  • "I love the power glove. It's so bad."
  • Whenever a delicate subject comes up (usually an actor who can't be made fun of comfortably due to tragedy striking them since the thing being reviewed was made), the issue is forcibly brought to The Critic's attention by The Elephant In The Room. As in, an actual elephant in the Nostalgia Critic's room who just hangs out and demands to be acknowledged when awkward jokes happen or tempt.
  • Recently, the involvement of Mara Wilson, on or off-camera, as a special guest, in a cameo, or as a co-writer in various Doug Walker / Lindsay Ellis projects and reviews is becoming this, due to her friendship with both of them. She may or may not be demon-possessed and seeking REVENGE!!! in a lot of the on-camera appearances. Slightly averted as she doesn't want to wear out her welcome, but she does show up frequently.
  • Since Doug started watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, he's incorporated not one, but two running gags - when someone crashes off-screen, the Cabbage Guy will shout "MY CABBAGES!!" and he'll also use the foaming mouth guy clip to sarcastically respond to elements in the subject of his reviews that are built up to be more awesome than they really are.
  • Perhaps more a tradition as it's done annually, but every January for Nostalgia Critic has some sort of theme in the reviews (for instance, 2014's "Nicolas Cage Month") and he always kicks them off as such:

Wait, it's January! You know what THAT means!
    Beat
    * THEME* MONTH!"

  • Many of the reviews is like to insulting about Pokémon and even piss off many fandoms.
  • In the Nostalgia Critic's first commerial special, he said, "This is a segment I like to call, 'After These Messages...'" In the second special, he said, "Welcome to Part 2 of a look back in Nostalgic Commercials in a segment that I like to call 'We'll Be Right Back...'" In subsequent specials, having obviously run out of decent names, he struggles to give each one a unique name after a recap of the previous specials he named. So far, he's come up with "!", "The Fourth One", "The Quickening", "Ehenzeeahneh", "Like You Give a Shit", "Just Go!", and "Do It!" Additionally, starting with the sixth special, he gradually shortens the opening and introduction of the episode before the commercial reviews start. By the latest one, the opening doesn't appear at all, the Channel Awesome logo has an appearance by Shia LaBeouf screaming "Do It!", followed by the Critic in his "I Donut Donuts" shirt (which he always wears in the commercial specials) repeating the exclamation, and using the remote to start the usual ABC "after these messages" montage that kicks off the commercial reviews.
