On a cool summer night, relaxing under the trees... you blink and suddenly find yourself in an unfamiliar town. Stripped of any former glory you held, all you have is a cellphone and the obvious question of "How do I get back home?"
Laguna Creek is a Discord-based multifandom horror RPG that is Powered By The Apocalypse. (More specifically, it uses the Monster Of The Week take on its systems.) Taking place on an alternate modern-day Earth, players will find themselves in a town plagued with mysterious supernatural happenings and working with non-player characters to find a way back home. It's speculated that the way out is through finding the root of all of the problems, but with the lack of a structured government or police force it makes finding the resources to do such very difficult.
Laguna Creek provides examples of:
- Claimed by the Supernatural: This applies to a ton of characters, but this most cleanly and clearly applies to Pararomantics.
- Close-Knit Community: To the point of overprotectiveness at times. Most characters are distrustful of the players due to their non-specific otherworldly origins.
- Fantasy Kitchen Sink: Expected for Monster of the Week style stories, but that doesn't mean they aren't all connected.
- Informed Small Town: Laguna Creek is slated to be a small town of around 9,000 people, but despite all of this it has its own radio station, crime museum, multiple serial killers, two highly respected universities, and the headquarters of one of the most revered fashion design companies in the world.
- Killer Game Master: Regardless of the fact that one of the main rules stated in Monster Of The Week is being on the side of the hunters, the GM seems to play by his own rules and doesn't always adhere to this.
- Metaplot: Much to the player's chagrin doing their damnedest to figure out what the hell is going on.
- Mood Whiplash: Yes, people are dying, but it's a small town. There's always something weird happening that's Played for Laughs. Like the Halloween party that resulted in a shark thrown off a cliff.
- Railroading: Averted. Laguna Creek is designed to encourage following loose ends through sporadic mini-sessions and the library system that allows players to look for hints when the GM is unavailable.
- Schrödinger's Gun: The plot seems to bend a lot according to the player's actions.
- Urban Fantasy: Laguna Creek is taking place in a modern day Earth, albeit only a few current events are being reflected in roleplay.
- Wacky College: The arts school is blatantly haunted with some fairly quirky teachers, and the STEM school seems to have somewhat morally bankrupt teachers and student body. So... pick your poison.
- Whatevermancy: There are multiple schools of magic any player and non-player character can learn how to use. It has been explained that people in Laguna Creek's world only know how to use one or two schools of magic.
- Your Magic's No Good Here: Players are stripped of all powers from their previous world, and (unless there is a move in a playbook that is identical to their powers in canon) there is no way to get them back.
