"That's the thing about the Commission, isn't it? Things don't make sense, until... they do."
The Handler

"The Majestic 12" is the fourth episode of The Umbrella Academy's second season.

Lila is revealed to have been adopted by the Handler after her parents are killed by the Commission and raised to be a highly-trained Tyke-Bomb. The Handler gives her a new assignment: protect Five. She, Diego, and Five infiltrate a gala hosted by "the Majestic 12", a secret government society, expecting to find Reginald there. Diego meets a woman who resembles Grace.

Luther admits to Vanya that she caused the apocalypse, causing Vanya to leave them and return to the farm. The thought of her leaving causes Harlan to run away, and he nearly drowns in the lake. Vanya rescues him by using her powers to lift the water, seemingly passing something onto him while giving him CPR. After a tearful conversation, Sissy and Vanya kiss.

Allison worries about Raymond as he did not come home following the riot, but finds out that the other organizers are holding a meeting without her. Raymond accuses her of being The Mole, since she can't explain her background or how she had gotten the cop to back off simply by whispering in his ear. She reunites with Luther, who was just fired by Ruby. After getting kicked out of his apartment, Luther goes to Elliot's, where the two take laughing gas.

Klaus tries to convince Dave not to enlist, but to no avail, and he returns to alcohol. He finds his followers at his house, and crashes at Allison's. At the gala, Five spies on the Majestic 12, but he and Diego are attacked by the Swedes. Five is only able to yell some Gratuitous Greek at Reginald, who seems momentarily startled, but still leaves.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Ambiguous Situation: The Handler finds child Lila in a cupboard after killing her parents. Whether she was locked in there as some kind of punishment or hidden for her own safety is unclear.
  • Binge Montage: Of Klaus in a liquor store. Shot with a Face Cam.
  • Black-Tie Infiltration: Diego, Lila, and Five infiltrate a high-society gala to find Reginald.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: Visualized when Lila runs up a hallway and is confronted with Diego (whom she likes) and Five (whom the Handler had told her to protect at all costs) being accosted by the Swedes at opposite ends. She is visibly torn before going to help Five.
  • Dance of Romance: Lila and Diego have an intimate dance at the gala.
  • Death of a Child: Harlan runs away and down the road. Sissy and Vanya split up to find him, going opposite directions, and Vanya is anguished when she realized he walked into the lake and drowned.
  • Destination Defenestration: Five chucks one of the Swedes out a second-story window.
  • Fantastic Time Management: The Handler spends nearly 20 years raising Lila while only a handful of days pass for everyone else involved.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Klaus tells Allison the "Frog and the Scorpion", but mangles it by not remembering what the moral is, saying it's that frogs are mean.
  • Government Conspiracy: "The Majestic 12", a circle of shadow government officials. They are seen having a secret meeting plotting to discuss assassinating Kennedy.
  • Hallway Fight: Diego and Five fighting the Swedes in the mansion's corridor.
  • I Can Explain: When Ray accused Allison of being a mole after watching (and misinterpreting) her Rumor powers on a policeman, she says she can explain but then realizes that the truth would be unbelievable and decides to shut up instead.
  • Janitor Impersonation Infiltration: The Swedes impersonate waitstaff at the gala.
  • Metaphorgotten: Klaus tries to help Allison with her guilt over how she freaked out Ray with her Rumor powers by telling her the "Scorpion and the Frog" fable. Due to Klaus'... creative rendition of the story, his paraphrasing and him forgetting the Scorpion's final line, he just confuses her until he tries to clarify. He still makes a mess of it though because he claims the aesop of the story is "frogs are bitches, and we don't negotiate with terrorists".
  • Mistaken for Spies: Because Allison had not told him of her superpowered family and why she was in the sixties in the first place, Raymond accuses her of being a planted spy.
  • Necktie Leash: Lila drags Diego by his tie onto the dance floor for their Dance of Romance.
  • Off the Wagon: Klaus throws three years of sobriety out the window after Dave rejects him.
  • Parental Sexuality Squick: After seeing his mother, Diego has a hard time picturing her actually dating his father.
  • Parting the Sea: Vanya's significant powers part a lake. While the water is standing, she grabs Harlan from the lake bed.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Dave's uncle Brian scoffs at how it makes sense that the feminine Klaus bought pink paint. Klaus points out that pink can be masculine in the right setting, before Brian calls him a queer and throws him out of the booth.
  • The Power of Love: Vanya for the first time in the series uses her powers to save someone rather than hurt them, out of love for Harlan.
  • Shout-Out: The Handler refers to the Swedes as "like Huey, Dewey, and Louie, only a little more meshugas."
  • Super Drowning Skills: Justified since he's wearing all of his clothes and has a disability; Harlan drowns within minutes of entering the lake, as denoted by the splashing sounds.
  • Terrible Pick-Up Lines: Played with. When Diego sees his (young) mother in the flesh at the gala, he approaches her with "You are real." which she misinterprets as a poor attempt at coming on to her.
  • Title Drop: "The Majestic 12" is supposedly a group of shadow government officials, as explained by Elliot.

The Frog & The Scorpion

Klaus tries to reassure Alison, when her husband refuses to contact her, by telling her the fable of The Frog and The Scorpion. This ends poorly however as he forgets the moral and goes completely off the rails with it, which only confuses Alison.

How well does it match the trope?
