Go To

Summary: When Jasiri and two hyena cubs are in danger in the Outlands, the Guard enlist the help of Thurston the Zebra to repel a tsetse fly infestation slowing down their efforts to help them.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Big "NO!":
    • Jasiri gives one when she tackles two of Janja's hyenas away from the cubs.
    • Madoa says this not long after, when Janja knocks Jasiri and the cubs into the steamvent
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • One for Thurston (strangely, however, he is neither mentioned by name or even in the credits).
    • Also one for Jasiri, as a lot of the plot focuses on her trying to protect Wema and Tuno from Janja, and later keeping them calm when they're trapped in the steam vent.
  • Darker and Edgier: If the Lion Guard had reached the vents even a few moments late, the show would have had its first major character death.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Listening to the lyrics to "The Worst Hyena We Know," even in context, makes it sound like Janja's obsession with Jasiri is rooted in something besides hate. According to Janja, Jasiri is "like nothing that you've seen," "causes nothing but strife" among guys, "drives me out of my mind," and "She gives a little laugh/And a cute little smile/But then she kicks our tails/And she does it in style!" Then there's the verse where he rants about her relationship with Kion like some jealous ex...
  • "The Hero Sucks" Song: Janja obviously intends for "The Worst Hyena We Know" to be this. The effect achieved is slightly different...
  • Insane Troll Logic: Thurston claims all zebras earn their stripes rather than being born with them, which Ono rightfully disagrees to. Thurston claims that Ono, not being a zebra, wouldn't know for certain unless he was one.
  • It's Personal: Part of Janja's motivation for eliminating Jasiri is her claiming part of his territory after his goons forget to redraw the boundaries for the dry season.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After Kion temporaily throws him, Janja says Kion is getting him steamed. The steam vent hisses, and Janja's tail gets scorched.
  • Mama Bear: Jasiri fights her way through Janja's clan when they attack Tunu and Wema.
  • No Sense of Direction: Despite his opinion, Thurston has absolutely no sense of direction—while heading back to the Pridelands, he instead ventures deeper into the Outlands and believes he's in the right place.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • The cubs have this reaction when Cheezi and Chungu start chasing them
    • Madoa later has this when Janja knocks Jasiri and the cubs into the steamvent and realises her clan is now helpless
    • Ono when he notices that the steamvent is about to blow, with Jasiri and the cubs still inside
  • Race Traitor: Janja sees Jasiri as this, due to her allegiance to the Lion Guard...Or that's what he's telling himself at the time.
  • Revenge: A part of Janja's motivation in taking out Jasiri as she had recently taken a piece of his territory as hers. Even when he fails to kill her in this episode, he still swears to get back at her one day.
  • Running Gag: The tsetse flies keep bothering everyone in the Pride Lands.
  • Sixth Ranger: Thurston, who is temporarily recruited by the Guard.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Tunu and Wema have speaking roles for the first time in this episode.
  • Tempting Fate: At the end, Fuli is sure the Guard doesn't have to hang out with zebras anymore. Cue a swarm of tsetse flies gathering around the Guard.
  • Villain Song: Janja sings "The Worst Hyena We Know" as he explains to Scar how "bad" Jasiri is.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: Scar is intrigued when Janja mentions Jasiri as "fearless." After learning of her relationship with the Guard, Scar orders Janja to dispose of her.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Janja sees nothing wrong with harming Tunu and Wema and even outright watching them burn alive in the lava pit.
