Tropes:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Blanche's past Christmas, were she was electrocuted due to her sister tricking her into touching the fallen tree star, had her father yell at her, send her to her room without opening a Christmas Eve gift, and straightened her previously curly hair.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...:
Rose: Why would she want your kidney?
  • Blatant Lies: To impress Virginia (or moreso to make her jealous), Blanche lies and says that the floral arrangements in her home were done by Nancy Reagan's decorator.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Implied And discussed. As Blanche puts it, it's a Southern thing. Whether she's referring to herself or someone else is never explained, though the things learned about Blanche's brothers in later episodes and the Sequel Series implies the latter.
    Rose: Maybe it's Southern.
Blanche: Sleeping with your brothers is Southern.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Virginia did bad things and pinned them on Blanche when they were children. As punishment for one thing Virginia did which she pinned on Blanche, Blanche's father sent Blanche up to her room and not let her celebrate Christmas.
  • Eats Babies: Dorothy's joke about Blanche's sister coming over while they take care of their neighbors baby.
Blanche: We cannot have a baby in the house! My sister's coming.
    Dorothy: Does she eat them?
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Virginia avoids dying by finding a matched kidney donor, Blanche gets to keep both her kidneys and she and her sister make up.
  • Foreshadowing: Blanche's sister not wanting to fight. She's drinking water instead of alcohol. And she's lost some weight.
  • The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Blanche doesn't get along with her sister. The two of them also have a mutual dislike for their older sister.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Blanche notes that her mean sister Virginia is acting really nice to her all of a sudden.
  • Parental Favoritism: Blanche believes that after her sister was born, her parents, especially her beloved father, stopped caring about her. One past incident when they were children had Virginia, who tricked Blanche into playing with their Christmas tree star that gave her an electrocal shock, lie to their parents that she tried to electrocute her. Her father got so mad, that he sent her to her room and said that Jesus was mad at her for ruining His birthday.
  • Really Gets Around: Blanche.
Rose: (about Blanche) Wherever she goes, she finds a man!
    Sophia: So do hookers!
  • Sadistic Choice: Blanche is torn between losing her kidney or her sister. As she notes, either way she's losing one.
  • Too Much Information: Dorothy's reaction to her mother Sophia telling the story of breastfeeding Dorothy's brother when he was 12.
  • Very Special Episode: Blanche has to deal with a sick sister who needs an organ transplant.
  • Wham Line: Virginia to Blanche: "I'm dying."
    • Also, Blanche to her roommates.
Dorothy: Oh, please enough already. The woman is dying. What could she possibly want from you?
    Blanche: (beat) My kidney.
