Recap / The Goldbergs S 4 E 7 Holy Kitt

Go To

A Plot: A shared love of Knight Rider brings Murray and Uncle Marvin together, until Adam ruins it, as revenge for not being included despite introducing Murray to the show.

B Plot: Beverly invites Lainey and Bill to Thanksgiving dinner, so Barry won't split his time between the two houses. Bill and Beverly argue over whose cooking is the best, sabotaging the other in the process.

  • An Aesop: To quote Adam after watching Murray and Marvin reconcile, which motivates Beverly to make amends with Bill: "I guess that's what today's about; being thankful for the people that are here, even if they drive you crazy."
  • Always Second Best: Adam manages to split up Murray and Marvin by getting them to play a Knight Rider board game, in which only one player can play as Michael Knight when they both want to. This also reignites a childhood argument between the two over how Murray always played The Lone Ranger while Marvin was stuck as Tonto.
  • Arc Words: While attempting to get Murray and Marvin to reconcile after breaking them up, Adam tries to convince them that there can be two Michael Knights, "like how there are two Adam Goldbergs at [his] school".
  • Family of Choice: Beverly ends up making amends with Bill, whose motivation was trying to hold onto a family tradition despite his family dwindling to himself and his daughter, by saying that they can all be part of one big family.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Marvin tells Adam that he should be more kind and supportive to his father...when Adam's upset after Marvin and Murray ditched and mocked him, saying how he's so nerdy that they forgot Knight Rider was among Adam's many interests.
  • Misery Poker: Bill (who's been cooking Thanksgiving dinner since his wife left him) and Beverly (who once cooked dinner while their grandmother was pinned under a trolley), trying to justify who deserves to cook the dinner more.
  • Not Helping Your Case: After Murray and Marvin return from seeing K.I.T.T. in the Thanksgiving Day parade that Adam had asked to attend, Marvin attempts to comfort Adam by saying it was a life-changing experience. Adam points out this is bragging, and not actually helping.
  • Remembered Too Late: Before leaving with Marvin to see the parade, Murray feels like he's forgetting something while looking at a picture of Adam...and then remembers to take the camera that was left next to the picture. It's only after returning and getting yelled at by Adam that he remembers Adam wanted to come.
  • Running Gag: Erica attempting to go vegan and being repeatedly ignored by Beverly, because she's too focused on her competition with Bill. She ends up not changing her diet because the family's had enough drama for one day, and admits in The Tag that it was just an attempt to distract herself from losing Geoff.
  • Symbolically Broken Object: The two plots cross when a deep-fried turkey ends up being launched out of the fryer due to Beverly's sabotage, damaging the hood of the parade K.I.T.T. car that Marvin "borrows" from the mall he's currently working for to prove his superiority to Murray. Coincidentally, this moment represents the lowest point in the relationships of both Murray/Marvin and Beverly/Bill.
  • Technician Versus Performer: Bill (performer) compares his "freestyle" cooking style to playing jazz music, while Beverly (technician) has a set routine that she's perfected. At the end of the episode, after reconciling, they combine their two styles to make a meal that even failed-vegan Erica comments is amazing.
  • Thanksgiving Episode: The episode's centered around it, with a parade and how to cook a turkey instigating the plots.
