Recap / The Goldbergs S 10 E 11 Blade Runner The Musical

Go To

A Plot: Erica wants Geoff to stop intruding on her girl time, and instead spend time with Barry and the JTP. However, Geoff's finds it difficult to reconnect with his old friends.

B Plot: When Ms. Cinoman takes time away from William Penn Academy in order to create her own one-woman show, Beverly ropes Adam into directing the school's annual "Winter Gourd Fest" musical, despite Mr. Glascott and some of the other teachers willing to run it themselves. However, after Adam ends up demoted to janitor at the 50's diner, he becomes focused on proving his worth and turns the musical into his own passion project.

  • Babysitter from Hell: In the JTP's eagerness to prove to Geoff that they can be competent babysitters, they end up waking baby Muriel up from her sleep and feeding her black forest cake. The one part they get completely right is singing a lullaby together in order to put Muriel back to sleep.
  • The Cameo: Steve Guttenberg, one of the original three men from Three Men and a Baby, once again appears as William Penn teacher Mr. Katman (having only previously appeared in the episode "Cocoon") at the start of the episode to nominate himself for director of the annual musical, and at the end in The Tag to try and help Barry and Geoff put baby Muriel to sleep.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: As the kids performing in the musical point out, trying to adapt an R-rated movie none of them are allowed to see into a family-friendly musical while retaining the same general plot is rather awkward.
  • Did You Think I Can't Feel?: The JTP are insulted upon learning that Geoff thinks they're immature; just because they aren't as knowledgeable about parenting, they're still dealing with grown-up problems of their own, such as Barry's medical education and Rob having legal issues. Geoff learning this makes him realize his own flaws, and helps him genuinely reconnect with the group.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Adam starts doubting his own talents after being demoted from performer to janitor at the diner, and after Beverly is asked by Principal Ball to fire Adam from directing the musical because of its Deliberate Values Dissonance, he becomes depressed and starts packing away all of the movie memorabilia in his room. It takes the William Penn students defying replacement director Mr. Glascott's instructions and performing the Blade Runner musical anyways, because they were starting to genuinely enjoy performing it, and the audience genuinely applauding their performance, for Adam to snap out of his funk.
  • Shout-Out:
    • As the episode's title indicates, Adam's musical is an adaptation of Blade Runner.
    • The JTP end up watching Three Men and a Baby to try to gain some "dad" knowledge and reconnect with Geoff.
  • Stranger in a Familiar Land: Geoff thinks that the JTP is too immature for him now that he's experienced fatherhood, especially since the first night he tries spending with them after a while is celebrating Andy's birthday watching women wrestling at a bar.
  • Title Drop: "Blade Runner: The Musical" is what Adam turns the school's musical into, based on a passion project he's had rattling in his head for years.
