Recap / The Goldbergs S 10 E 10 Worst Grinch Ever

Go To

A Plot: When Erica buys a Christmas-themed toy for Muriel, Beverly becomes a Grinch out of fear that Muriel won't be raised Jewish. However, it turns out the true Worst Grinch Ever is Geoff.

B Plot: Adam learns that Brea is back in town for the holidays, and has a new boyfriend, which upsets him despite how he recently started a new relationship of his own. Things come to a head when the JTP hosts a holiday party that Adam, Brea, and their new partners all attend.

  • Ambiguously Jewish: Beverley is outraged that Christmas is creeping in at the fringes and wants to keep it strictly Chanukah. While Barry and Adam have only the haziest concept of what Chanukah celebrates in Jewish tradition, and the Schwarzes are more inclined to compromise about being Jewish in a Gentile world. Beverley is seen, briefly, to sponsor a "Father Chanukah" figure in blue-and-white coloured robesnote  rather than the unacceptably Gentile red and white. One aspect that horrifies everybody is something called "spiral-cut ham". The inference, bafflingly, is that the "spiral cut" part is more offensive than the "eating ham" part.
  • Christmas Carolers: As part of Erica both trying out new traditions and spiting Beverly, Erica briefly joins a caroling group.
  • Christmas Episode / Hanukkah Episode: The episode's plots center around celebrating the winter holidays, with it technically counting as both a Christmas and Hanukkah Episode due to Beverly wanting to stick to their Jewish traditions and Erica not wanting to be beholden to them.
  • Commonality Connection:
    • Despite agreeing to help Adam sabotage Brea's relationship with Kirk, Barry immediately hits it off with the other man when they double-date at the Cheesecake Factory and Kirk suggests trying every cheesecake on the menu, appealing to Barry's Big Eater habits.
    • In The Tag, Erica decides to bedazzle a hand-knitted baby shirt with Hanukkah puns, earning Beverly's praise...even though Beverly then offers to redo the work completely due to Erica's poor needlework.
  • Gift-Giving Gaffe: Having become a Green-Eyed Monster, Adam can't help but gift Brea an expensive locket with both of their pictures in it while at the JTP's party, which everyone else there (except Kirk, who's just confused) admits is far too intimate and also hurtful towards his new girlfriend Carmen.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Despite having parted amicably, Adam isn't prepared to see Brea has already moved on from him and is dating a guy named Kirk. After his Gift-Giving Gaffe unintentionally hurts Carmen, Adam finally decides to move on from the past, apologizing to Brea and parting amicably, then going to Carmen to reaffirm his love for his new girlfriend.
  • The Grinch: After Erica reads How the Grinch Stole Christmas! to Muriel, she refers to Beverly as a Grinch for wanting to outright destroy the Christmas-themed decorations and toys that Erica is introducing to Muriel.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Beverly and Lou Schwartz conspire to make the disappearance of Muriel's new Mrs. Claus toy look like an accident in the same tone as describing a hit, even using the phrase "sleep with the fishes".
  • Not Me This Time: When all of the Christmas decorations are suddenly removed from Muriel's room, Erica immediately blames Beverly. However, as soon as she calls Beverly The Grinch, Geoff confesses to the act, as he also loves Hanukkah traditions and was upset that Erica was throwing them out entirely to spite Beverly instead of trying to find a balance between old and new ways to raise Muriel.
  • Title Drop: Erica calls Geoff the Worst Grinch Evernote  when, after he confesses to removing their Christmas decorations and why he did it, he then admits he kept the gift-wrapped presents hidden in a closet to give to Muriel later.
  • Rhymes on a Dime: When Geoff tells Erica how he snuck all of the Christmas decorations out of Muriel's room without being noticed, he does it in rhyme to intentionally emulate How the Grinch Stole Christmas!.
  • Under the Mistletoe: At the start of the B Plot, Adam and Carmen agree to a real date after noticing they're under some mistletoe at the 50's diner and deciding to share a kiss under it. It's also how the B Plot ends, when Adam goes to apologize to Carmen for his Gift-Giving Gaffe and says he's willing to fight for her love now.
