Recap / The Goldbergs S 10 E 9 Million Dollar Reward

Go To

A Plot: Adam wants to spend more time with his new coworkers at the 50's diner than with Beverly, who overreacts and thinks that Adam's hanging with the wrong crowd.

B Plot: Barry is excelling in medical school, but overreacts upon receiving his first B-, disbanding the JTP and spending more time at the Schwartz house to focus more on his studies.

  • Commonality Connection: The episode begins with Adam and Johnny Atkins acting in a Preps VS Greasers skit at the 50's diner, ultimately becoming friends and having a musical number when they realize they're both fans of "girls, cars, and Rock & Roll".
  • Face on a Milk Carton: The Title Drop comes when Adam, who accidentally spent one whole night away from home due to Alcohol-Induced Idiocy after stating he'd only be gone for the evening, learns that Beverly has put up posters throughout their neighborhood offering a million-dollar reward for his safe return.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Geoff informs Joanne of the four things she'll need to do if she wants Barry (or any Goldberg) to act like a decent roommate: Flatter, Inflate egos, Serving, and Spoiling. Geoff then states that, thanks to Erica, he's an excellent FISSer.
  • Metaphorically True: A day after fighting with Beverly about his new friends, Adam is welcomed home by Brea, who is both relieved and confused that he's alright. It immediately turns out that Beverly decided that Brea was a better influence on him than Carmen, and to get Brea to come all the way there during her midterm break, Beverly had told her that Adam was in a car accident. When pressured, Beverly says that she hadn't lied...because when Adam was four years old, she had a minor fender-bender while he was riding in the backseat, and she hadn't told Brea how long ago or severe the car accident was.
  • Offscreen Breakup: By the time of this episode, Adam and Brea have broken up with no mentions in previous episodes.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: After all four steps of Geoff's FISS plan fail and Barry calls her parents bothersome just for letting him know they're leaving the house because they can't tolerate him anymore, Joanne lays out how selfish and demanding he's been when her family's done their best to be accommodating.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Lou and Linda Schwartz, despite initially considering it fair that Barry spends time with them after all the time their kids spend with the Goldbergs, are almost immediately frustrated by Barry having his feet massaged on their tables or him removing Lou's beloved horse figurines because he couldn't focus on his studies with them staring at him. Even Joanne eventually gets fed up and gives him "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • What Did I Do Last Night?: After Adam spends a night hanging with his new coworkers, including a girl named Carmen that's romantically interested in him, he ends up blacking out and waking up on Carmen's couch with a gap in his memory (though is told that nothing too bad happened and he spent most of it mumbling about Beverly).
