Recap / The Goldbergs S 10 E 12 Amadoofus

Go To

A Plot: Mr. Perrot, one of the teachers at William Penn, is attracted to widow Beverly, and everyone but Beverly is aware of that.

B Plot: Dave Kim is in town, and asks Adam for advice on a movie script he wrote for one of his classes: a comedic spoof of Amadeus called Amadoofus. And to Adam's horror, it's amazing, making his own recent scripts pale in comparison to the point that he plots Dave Kim's downfall.

  • Better as Friends: In the end of the A Plot, Beverly admits to not being ready to date again, but appreciates Mr. Perrot's kindness and hopes they can still work well together.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Adam remarks that he never actually watched or read A Passage to India before creating a parody version called A Passage to Lydia, and is surprised to learn it was about racial tension and other serious topics that makes his parody seem insulting in hindsight.
    • Beverly utterly fails to recognize Mr. Perrot's initial attempts at flirting, stating to his face that a mixtape he gave her will be perfect to regift to Erica.
  • Everyone Can See It: Beverly is the only person unaware that Mr. Perrot is romantically interested in her, even after being gifted a mixtape and he orders the Lover's Special for them on a bistro date, up until he tries to touch her hand affectionately on said date.
  • Food Slap: The Cold Open ends with Erica dumping a tub of popcorn over Geoff when he admits to going to the theater and watching the award-nominated movies without her.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Adam does not handle the greatness of Dave Kim's script well, and gleefully plots his downfall.
  • No Dead Body Poops: Averted in Dave Kim's comedy, where both his original ending and Adam's revised ending has someone farting/pooping as they die.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: When Mr. Perrot gives Beverly a lift home on his motorcycle, Barry comments how smoking hot Perrot's denim-clad girlfriend is right as Beverly removes her helmet and Barry immediately regrets what he said.
  • Pass the Popcorn: The Goldbergs are eating popcorn as they watch the Academy Awards. When Erica and Geoff start arguing due to Geoff having snuck off to watch the featured movies in theater without her, the others keep eating as they watch the fight.
  • Pride: Adam's plan to destroy Dave Kim is to compliment his play and state that its only flaw is that there should be more, leading him to keep adding content until he's exhausted enough for Adam to try and take over as director, quite similarly to how Salieri caused Mozart's death by exhaustion in an attempt to claim Mozart's Requiem as his own.
  • Shallow Parody: Discussed In-Universe in regard to Adam's movie parodies. If it's not a sci-fi/fantasy film or a comedy, Adam doesn't bother to watch and does the bare minimum, as evidenced with the reactions to A Passage to Lydia.
  • Shipper on Deck: While Barry is upset with his mom potentially dating again and Mr. Glascott upset because he was going to set Beverly up with one of his cousins, Erica takes steps to undo their sabotage in the hopes that Beverly won't spend the rest of her life alone.
  • Shout-Out: The episode begins with the Goldbergs watching the Best Picture Awards and remarking on winning movie Amadeus, as well as Splash and Smokey and the Bandit.
  • Take Our Word for It: Although Dave Kim's script is stated to be amazing, to the point that he convinces his old friends in Jenkintown (including Geoff and a visiting Brea) to help him make a film, the only parts of it that are actually discussed aloud is some Toilet Humor gags and the subpar scenes caused by Dave Kim's exhaustion and Adam's meddling.
  • Toilet Humor: Dave Kim's "Amadoofus" parody centers around the rival musicians composing music out of the sounds of their own farts. In its original ending, Silly Larry dies and his last lengthy fart is finally a sound worthy of comparison to Amadoofus' masterpieces. In Adam's "revised" ending once Dave Kim is too exhausted to direct, Amadoofus admits that Silly Larry was the true genius and dies while soiling himself.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The plot between Adam and Dave Kim is inspired by Amadeus, with Adam taking on the role of the jealous Salieri as Dave Kim's script becomes popular. Adam's even asked to play "Silly Larry" in a performance of Dave Kim's spoof of the movie.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: After Adam's jealousy and sabotage reaches the point where he and Dave Kim fight and declare their friendship to be over, they end up apologizing immediately afterwards, with Adam stating that Dave Kim has genuine talent and Dave Kim admitting how hard it was to come up with good comedy compared to Adam's natural talent.
