Julie: Of course, there is the chance that I'm only joking. It's just possible that when you come in, I won't have taken my clothes off, and I'll be standing behind the door waiting to drop a filing cabinet on your head.
Julie Porter threatening some reporters who wanted to take nude photos of her.

  • Date First Aired: 09/01/1992

We begin this episode on Brittas organising yet another meeting. Carole however, isn't feeling too well, suffering morning sickness from her pregnancy. She also hasn't told Brittas about said pregnancy, a fact which Laura tells her that she needs to do.

Brittas has decided to close the centre yet again to put forward a new timetable which segregates the sexes for late-night sessions and makes single women be chaperoned around by married male colleagues. The reason for this is that Brittas has found a pair of pants on the couch in his office, and he doesn't want it to happen again. Brittas also reveals that Julie had been caught saving a dog whilst naked, an act which he disapproved of (since she was in the nude).

Carole tries to find out the identity of her unborn child's father. Apparently, it occurred at a New Year's party at Julie's. Apparently, she had sex with an unknown person whilst she was wearing a tiger costume. The man went down, promising to meet her downstairs but when she came down, he was nowhere to be seen. Julie decides to help but it didn't help that there were 30 gatecrashers from the Rugby club.

Meanwhile, the reporters want to take a nude photo of Julie, something which Brittas recounts to Colin. They also find the existence of a bedroom in the centre. He concludes that it's a "love nest" and that Gavin is involved. He does this by getting Colin to drill a hole into the room. During this, he questions Tim about it, convincing him that Gavin is having sex with other women. However, Colin accidentally gets the women's changing rooms and gets poked in the eye for it. During this, Helen and Laura talk, with Helen revealing that the underwear was hers. Apparently, she had sex with Michael whilst Gordon was away, and she's feeling regretful about it. She also laments how Brittas didn't respond to a note she wrote for him telling him to meet her upstairs for sex at Julie's party. Laura realizes that Carole intercepted that note.

Brittas gets Linda to wear a new t-shirt and tells her to be friendly to Gavin. As he listens in on her. However, Gavin's attempts to calm down with a cigarette are misinterpreted by Brittas as Gavin and Linda having sex. During this, the reporters come to get Julie but she tells them that she will not be posing nude for them. Dejected, they decide to listen in on Brittas' bug. Brittas follows said bug, but he finds out that Carole has moved into the leisure centre, having finally been kicked out of her flat. Although he threatens her with throwing her out but he offers her help. Unfortunately, they're intercepted by the reporters, who think they're having sex.

Due to this, Brittas and Helen's marriage guidance session is canceled. Brittas however argues that the topic they were going to discuss, sex, wouldn't have done well anyway, as Helen was shown to have been quite good at sex during that New Year's Eve party. Helen realizes with horror that it's very likely that the father of Carole's unborn child is Brittas. Oh dear indeed...

Tropes Featured in this episode:

  • Accidental Adultery: The end of the episode reveals that Brittas bedded Carole legitimately believing that it was Helen in the costume (they were wearing the same tiger costume).
  • Accidental Pervert: Colin gets caught peeping through a hole in the floor of Brittas' office that looks into the women's showers, even though he didn't know they were down there.
  • Bed Trick: This was how Carole got impregnated with her twins in the first place. The encounter took place at a New Year's Eve Costume Party and unfortunately for her, both she and Helen decided to go using the same tiger costume. This eventually led to Brittas having sex with Carole genuinely believing it was Helen under the costume.
  • Benevolent Boss: After saying he'd kick a pregnant Carole out of the leisure centre, he then offers to help her find somewhere to stay, even offering her to live with him for as long as she needed. He also allows Carole to go home after he catches her in one of her bouts with Morning Sickness.
  • Call-Back:
    • Part of the reason that Carole fell asleep at the New Year's Eve party was that her bed had been taken away by the bailiffs, a fact previously revealed in "Underwater Wedding".
    • Helen and Brittas are now attempting to do marriage guidance, as suggested by Dr. Grey back in "Stop Thief!".
    • The person Helen had sex with was Michael, who was the man she had attempted to marry back in "Back From the Dead".
  • Cigarette of Anxiety: Gavin gets out the cigarettes when he is feeling depressed over the cold shoulder that Tim is giving him.
  • Closet Sublet: Carole moves into one of the centre's cupboards after losing her home.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Helen tells Laura that she swore never to see Michael again after the incident at Julie's party, where she slipped in a note into his pocket asking him to meet her upstairs only to get no response. Laura is thus left with the impression that Michael is the father of Carole's future baby. However, the end of the episode reveals that Brittas was the one who picked up the note and went upstairs to who he thought was Helen, making him the real future father of Carole's baby.
  • Eye Scream: Colin gets poked in the eye by a broom by one of the ladies in the changing room and has to keep a bandage on it for the rest of the episode.
  • Fictional Document: The Whitbury Chronicle, one of the newspapers which reports on Julie saving the dog whilst naked.
  • Finding a Bra in Your Car: The plot kicks off when Brittas finds a pair of underwear down the back of one of the couches in his main office, which is later revealed to be the result of sex with a previous relationship that his wife had. Unlike most examples of this trope, Brittas never does find out that it's his wife's; he initially assumes it comes from one of his staff and he drops it once he discovers Carole's bedroom in the leisure centre.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • When Carole is recounting her sexual tryst, she recalls how at the end, he gave off a "Wooo", which is a noise that Brittas tends to make. This sets up the reveal at the end that he's the mystery man.
    • When Brittas is segregating the sexes, Colin gives an example of what could happen if you let a man and a woman together. The example is oddly specific and ends with the man having to pay child maintenance. "Biggles Tells a Lie" would eventually reveal that Colin was indeed using himself as an example in this episode when it's revealed that he has an illegitimate daughter. In fact, Gordon Brittas: Sharing the Dream would reveal that this was the moment when Brittas suspected that Colin had an illegitimate child, which was confirmed when said child appeared at the centre.
  • The Ghost: Carole briefly talks to two people called Chris and Jeremy, but they never appear on screen.
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places: If the underwear stuffed in the couch is any indication, Helen had sex with Michael on the couch of Brittas' main office.
  • Mistaken for Cheating:
    • Brittas manages to get into Tim's head that his boyfriend Gavin is cheating on him with girls after he finds Gavin's hat in an alleged love nest, even though the room in question was actually Carole's bedroom and she was just fixing the hat for Gavin.
    • After Brittas is caught in a compromising position with Carole (even though he was simply trying to comfort her), the marriage counsellor that he and Helen were seeing cancels, believing that Brittas was cheating on Helen and that it was a sign that the marriage wasn’t working out. Helen tried to explain, but she was just told that she was being naive.
  • Morning Sickness: Carole is suffering from the effects of her pregnancy, a fact shown by her puking in a bucket.
  • My Secret Pregnancy: Carole is hiding her pregnancy from Brittas, although it's obvious to everyone else.
Laura: You gotta face up to it sometime Carole, I mean - Morning Sickness, maternity clothes - even Brittas'll notice one day.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Julie saves a dog while naked offscreen, which leaves her hounded by reporters.
  • Non-Residential Residence: Carole permanently moves into one of the leisure centre's supply cupboards after losing her house.
  • Not What It Looks Like:
    • Gavin and Linda having a cigarette is interpreted by Brittas (overhearing them through his bug) as them having sex.
    • Later, the reporters interpret Brittas trying to console Carole as them having a relationship together.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Julie saves a dog from a river while naked.
  • Open-Fly Gag: Colin spends the episode with an open fly, something which is noted with disgust by Brittas.
  • The Peeping Tom: Colin is mistaken for one after he drills a hole over the women's showers.
  • Pet the Dog: Brittas offers to help Carole find a place to live in after forcing her to leave the leisure centre. Even beforehand, he does allow Carole to go home when he catches her puking.
  • Public Exposure: The reporters want Julie to pose naked for their tabloid newspaper. However, Julie refuses to do so, even threatening to drop a filing cabinet on their heads.
  • Retcon: It was revealed Carole had been impregnated at one of Julie's parties... even though Carole was first confirmed to be pregnant in Series 1's "Assassin", back when Angie worked at the centre instead. Additionally, the whole incident came about because Helen was trying to have sex with Michael... even though she didn't even meet him until the events of "Back from the Dead", which would have taken place after Carole discovered she was pregnant in "Assassin".
  • The Reveal: At the end of the episode, it is revealed that Brittas was the mysterious stranger who made love to Carole at the New Year’s party, making him the father of Carole’s future child.
  • Secret Squatter: Unbeknownst to anyone in the leisure centre, Carole had moved in after having been thrown out of her apartment between Series 1 and 2. This is not found out until this episode, when Brittas, trying to search for a "love nest" in the centre, stumbled upon the bedroom she had made up in one of the cupboards. Zig-Zagged in that Brittas does threaten to kick her out once he finds out, but she does ultimately get to live there for the rest of the show.
  • Sex at Work: One of the plots of this episode involves Brittas trying to locate a "love nest" in his leisure centre after finding underwear down the back of his main office couch. It's eventually revealed that whilst there was sex, it wasn't between the co-workers (Helen had a final act of sex with her fiancée from "Back From the Dead" in there).
  • Sexual Euphemism: The act of having sex is referred to here (something more clearly put forward by Laura) as the worshipping of each other's temples of the body.
  • Sexy Secretary: This episode plays up Julie's sexy side when a tabloid magazine try to interview her after she is photographed saving a dog from a lake whilst naked.
  • Shoe Phone: The bug that Brittas gives Linda takes the form of a t-shirt from his days at the Aldershot Leisure Centre.
  • Shout-Out: Laura sarcastically suggests to Brittas to take the pair of underpants he found and have each member of staff wear them, with the person for whom the underwear fits perfectly getting to marry the Prince.
  • Smoking Hot Sex: Colin tells the reporters that Brittas bugged Linda, and that Brittas overheard Gavin and Linda having sex in a "love nest". Thus, when the reporters overhear them sharing a cigarette, they fear that they missed the sex, unaware that the two never had sex at all.
Gavin: You can't beat a cigarette, can you?
Reporter: ... I think we've missed that one.
  • Title Drop: Brittas mentions the inner "Temple of the Body" several times and how the staff need to make sure their temples remain pure.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Thankfully, we don't see Carole's puke on-screen when she is suffering from Morning Sickness.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Despite Brittas' claim to Carole that he'll try to help her with her issues, this is never mentioned again, and later episodes have her still living in the centre.
  • Who's Your Daddy?: Carole spends the whole episode trying to find who caused her pregnancy without much luck. The end of the episode reveals it's Brittas.
