Recap / The Americans S 3 E 4 Dimebag

Go To

Elizabeth spies on Kimberly (Julia Garner), the babysitter from the previous episode, who is more interested in partying and music than she is in school. As a way in, Philip poses as a lawyer who can also make fake ID's for her and also get her drugs, but when Kimberly becomes attracted to him, Philip feels it's a line he doesn't want to cross.

Elizabeth and Philip continue to argue about Paige, especially when he asks her what she wants for her birthday dinner, and buys her the latest album by Yazoo as a present. Paige invites Pastor Tim and his wife to the dinner, at the dinner, she tells her parents she wants to be baptized, which Elizabeth and Philip believe Paige set up from the very beginning.

Nina is told by the prison authorities her sentence will be reduced if she's able to get Evi to confess. Nina starts to open up to Evi and tell her about her past in order to get Evi to talk.

Stan tells Gaad about about his suspicions about Zinaida, and Gaad just tells him to be careful. When Stan takes Zinaida to dinner, and Zinaida uses the bathroom, Stan goes back later to see if she left a message there. Stan and Philip also go to another EST meeting, and Stan's outburst about how he thinks EST is a lot of bull leads to Tori (Callie Thorne), a woman at the meeting, to asking him out, and also leads Stan to confess to Sandra about his affair with Nina.

Elsewhere, Elizabeth meets up again with Lisa, whose husband Maurice (Thaddeus Daniels) is suspicious of her.

This episode contains examples of:

  • The Alcoholic: It's implied Maurice is one, along with Lisa, and that he's Off the Wagon. It's also implied there's Domestic Abuse between him and Lisa.
  • Batman Gambit: Elizabeth and Philip both believe this is what Paige was pulling on them when she invited Pastor Tim and Alice to dinner so she could tell her parents she wanted to be baptized.
  • Dead Drop: The prison official Nina meets with tells Nina Evi was caught using one of these.
  • Diegetic Switch: Done twice with Yazoo's music. The first is when Paige is listening to "Don't Go" in her room (from the album Philip bought her) to the song playing over the scene where Stan searches the diner bathroom to see if Zinaida left a message there. The second is when, at the end, Kimberly plays "Only You" on her radio, and then we hear it as score while Philip and Kimberly sit together.
  • Fake Defector: Stan starts to believe Zinaida might be this. Gaad tells him to be careful in trying to prove that.
  • Fille Fatale: Elizabeth believes Kimberly has elements of this, pointing out to Philip she likes to drink and use drugs, and is attracted to older men.
  • Henpecked Husband: When Philip tells Elizabeth Martha wants a family, Elizabeth basically implies "Clark" has become this.
  • Minor with Fake I.D.: What Kimberly and her friends are, which is how Philip gets close to them - he pretends to be someone who can make better ID's than the ones they have.
  • Playing Drunk: Elizabeth pretends to be drunk, or at least in danger of going Off the Wagon, to talk with Lisa.
  • Rule of Symbolism: At one point, there's an ad for Love Soft Baby Perfume that plays on TV, which was criticized at the time for sexualizing children. This mirrors how uncomfortable Philip feels about having to try and seduce Kimberly.
  • Shipper on Deck: Philip encourages Stan to go out on a date with Tori.
  • Shout-Out: In addition to the Yazoo songs, there's also Paige having a poster of Rick Springfield in her bedroom.
  • Suddenly Shouting: At the EST meeting, when Lawrence tries to get Stan to share his feelings about his divorce by pretending to be Sandra, Stan tries to be calm, but when Lawrence calls Stan an asshole, Stan yells out, "Don't call me an asshole, ASSHOLE! This is BULLSHIT!"
