Recap / The Americans S 2 E 9 Martial Eagle

Go To

Elizabeth and Philip end up going to Martial Eagle, the contra camp, to get photos of the camp. Philip pretends to be the driver of a septic tank car, while Elizabeth hides in the back of the truck. They're able to get in and out, and Philip gets his photos, but not before having to kill one of the soldiers there. That, and the fact the septic tank driver they had kidnapped (Philip convinced Elizabeth to leave him Bound and Gagged to a tree instead of killing him) has died doesn't sit well with Philip, so he's even more upset when he finds out Paige has given away her money ($600) to the church she belongs to; he yells at her and rips pages from her Bible. He also warns Pastor Tim (Kelly AuCoin), the minister at the church, to stay away from Paige, but Pastor Tim, gently but firmly, puts him off. Unbeknownst to Philip (and Elizabeth), Larrick hears about the people they killed, and is pissed.

Stan finally gets the clearance he needs from the DOJ, and interviews as many scientists as he can about the stealth technology, including Fred, who warns Philip this is happening. When Martha pulls files for Stan on this, she mentions the family who was murdered, and Stan decides to widen the scope of his investigation to include that as well.

Elsewhere, "Clark" plays the doctored tape for Martha, which she gets upset about, but convinces her to do what "Clark" asked and continue to get files on Gaad and the others, and Sandra tells Stan she's going away with someone she met through her EST sessions.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Call-Back: Gaad finds Arkady at a diner, and tells him if the Soviets won't believe Vlad wasn't killed by the FBI, Gaad will lose his job, but he'll let leak the fact the illegals captured and tortured Patterson, causing Arkady to lose his job as well.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Zigzagged. At first, Elizabeth seems put off by how vehement Philip acts towards Paige when they find out she gave her money to the church. However, that night, she wakes Paige up and orders her to clean the refrigerator, mop the floor, and fold laundry, telling her that's what being a grown-up is all about.
  • Foreshadowing: Lisa, the woman from Northrup Elizabeth meets at an AA meeting, becomes important later.
  • Hollywood Silencer: Elizabeth shoots the men at the contra camp with a gun equipped with one of these.
  • Irony: Lampshaded - Sandra points out how ironic it is Stan, who works in counter-intelligence, didn't know she was seeing another man, meaning he wasn't paying attention, or didn't care.
  • Life Isn't Fair: The point Elizabeth says she's making when she orders Paige to do cleaning at night - or, at least, life for adults isn't fair.
  • Shout-Out: Sandra is listening to Dr. Ruth Westheimer (a sex therapist) on the radio when Stan comes in, before she tells him she's going away with another man.
  • Suddenly Shouting: When Philip gets angry at Paige for giving her $600 (which she had saved for a trip to Europe) to the church:
Philip: YOU RESPECT JESUS MORE THAN YOU RESPECT US?!
