Recap / The Americans S1E11 - Covert War

Go To

The Americans continue to extract revenge against the Soviets for Chris' murder, killing three Russian officers, including Zhukov. As Elizabeth considered Zhukov a mentor, she wants to kill Patterson (Paul Fitzgerald), the man responsible, but Claudia seemingly warns her not to. Elizabeth goes ahead and kidnaps Patterson anyway, but can't bring herself to kill him.

This episode contains examples of:

  • All Men Are Perverts: Elizabeth thinks she can get to Patterson because he's an example of this trope.
  • Back Story: Claudia had been involved with Zhukov when they were younger.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: At the end, Philip tells Elizabeth he can't stay in his hotel room anymore, as it's no good for him or the kids. Elizabeth thinks he's getting ready to come back, and she's perfectly willing for that to happen, but instead Philip reveals he's gotten an apartment.
  • Batman Gambit: Elizabeth believes Claudia pulled this on her to get her to go after Patterson in revenge for killing Zhukov.
  • Call-Back: Sanford tells Elizabeth he's recruited a general who has important information for them.
  • Diegetic Switch: At the bar Elizabeth meets Patterson at, he puts on "Rough Boys" by Pete Townshend (she jokes she didn't expect that from him). When they go to the bathroom (see Do You Want to Copulate? below), and she starts to fight him, the song switches to being the score.note
  • Do You Want to Copulate?: Elizabeth gets Patterson to follow her into the bathroom to have sex by pretending to give him a crossword clue about the four-letter word that ends the sentence, "Do you want to...?"
  • Flashback: Elizabeth has a few of these with Zhukov, remembering all the times he acted like a father figure to her.
  • Mistaken for Gay: When Stan sees Matthew wearing make-up (see Shout-Out below), Matthew assures his father, "I'm not gay."
  • The Mole: Nina decides to become this, telling Arkady everything she's done.
  • Shout-Out: Philip, with Paige and Henry, watch Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom in his hotel room.
  • Villainous BSoD: Elizabeth has this when she's unable to bring herself to kill Patterson, and she ends up crying in the other room.
