Recap / The Americans S 3 E 5 Salang Pass

Go To

Elizabeth continues to see Lisa, and offers her a temporary home to stay with her children and get away from Maurice. When she finds out Lisa has put in a transfer to the Northrup plant nearby, Elizabeth finds the guy who is working in the position Lisa's applying for, and kills him by kicking a tire jack out from under the car he's working on. Elizabeth then hears about Lisa's new transfer, and suggests they go out to celebrate.

Philip continues to get close to Kimberly, but is not happy about the age difference. When it does seem like he's going to cross the line and sleep with her, her parents come home, and he has to leave. Before that happens, he is able to take pictures and take a sample of her father's briefcase. When he gets home, Philip asks Elizabeth if she ever thinks about the people they have to sleep with in order to get the information they need.

Stan comes to Oleg, telling him he thinks Zinaida might be a fake defector, and that he would try and convince the FBI to trade Zinaida for Nina. Oleg doesn't believe it, but later, when he's talking with Tatiana, he muses on whether the Centre might try to put a Fake Defector in place. Tatiana says it's crazy, but it's an idea worth pursuing. Oleg goes back to Stan and tells him he has nothing, but Stan convinces him he's sincere about this.

Elsewhere, Philip takes Paige to the store to buy a dress for her baptism ceremony, and Yousaf meets with Philip about the Afghan fundamentalists he's been talking to.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Call-Back: Stan tells Philip Tori called him to ask him out on a date.
  • Continuity Nod: Martha takes Philip to a foster care facility, as she still wants kids.
  • Curious Qualms of Conscience: Philip is feeling this way about his assignment with Kimberly. Gabriel says he understands this, but Philip needs to go through with it for the mission.
  • Flashback: We see Philip, when he was younger, being forced to sleep with various people as part of his training, including an older woman, a younger woman, and an older man.
  • Foil: Kimberly is this for Paige. Both are teenage girls who are neglected by their parents, but while Kimberly is indifferent to her father's neglect, and blissfully ignorant of what he does (she thinks he works for the Department of Agriculture, when he's really with the CIA), Paige is suspicious of her father. Also, while Kimberly takes up the usual mantle of teenage rebellion - drugs, parties, and sex - Paige turns towards the church, which is equally rebellious when it comes to her own parents.
  • Food Fight: Kimberly and Philip playfully throw popcorn at each other when they're in her father's house.
  • Parental Issues: Stan admits Matthew is more of a mystery to him than any of the people he's investigated.
  • Shout-Out: A Flock of Seagulls' "I Ran (So Far Away)" plays at the party Kimberly meets Philip at.
