Recap / The Academy of Hope and the High School Students of Despair

Go To

Makoto Naegi goes off to meet up with Ryouta Mitarai, and stop his hope video from brainwashing the entire world. Togami, Hagakure, and Munakata deal with the brainwashed soldiers.

  • Artificial Limbs: Nagito has gotten rid of Junko's left arm and replaced it with a much more functional and much less creepy mechanical arm.
  • The Atoner: When Munakata demands to know why the former Remnants of Despair showed up, the Imposter says they seek "atonement". Later, Nidai and Gundham tell Mitarai that they survived and are destined to make amends for their actions while working for their despair-obssessed boss. Additionally, Sonia clarifies that all of them didn't simply seek it for the sake of forgiveness, implying that there's more than just that.
  • Back for the Finale: The entire 77th class, and later Kyoko.
  • Big Brother Instinct: The Imposter, towards Mitarai.
  • Big Eater: Akane is seen eating Teruteru's newly cooked meat in the middle of a fight.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The entire 77th class came in and stop Mitarai's broadcast.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Final Killing Game leaves a fatal blow for the Future Foundation, Class 77-B pulled a Zero-Approval Gambit to cover up Tengan's crimes, and Munakata has lost everything (Chisa and Juzo included). On the brightest side, Kyoko is still alive thanks to drinking Seiko's "Antagonist" antidote and Mikan saving her moments later, the Tragedy is finally undone, Class 77-B invites Mitarai to join them and gets their own paradise in Jabberwock Island, and Makoto becomes the headmaster of the newly rebuilt Hope's Peak Academy.
  • Book Ends: This episode is named after the subtitle for the very first game.
  • Brown Note: Ibuki's "Kimi ni mo Todoke!" can also be used as a weapon.
  • Call-Back: For Hajime, who needs talent if he only needs to Be Himself?
  • The Cameo: Komaru and Toko are last seen taking a break with Asahina in the re-opened Hope's Peak Academy.
  • Cue the Sun: As The 77th class talks to Ryota, the sun clears the red skies.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: The 77th class have been restored, Ryota gains friends, Makoto becomes headmaster of Hope's Peak with help by Kyoko.
  • 11th-Hour Ranger: The former Remnants show up to finish Makoto's job.
  • Everybody Lives: Except for the ones that died. Everyone from the second game is completely fine, and Kirigiri is back.
    • Notably, every survivor from the first game survived this game as well.
  • The Exile: Being branded as the "scum of humanity" by the world is part of Class 77-B's self-imposed punishment for all the horrible actions they've committed during The Tragedy, even though everything is all Junko's fault.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Inverted. After being de-brainwashed, Fuyuhiko takes off the eyepatch he wore as a Remnant of Despair and has his scarred/missing eye out in the open.
  • Grand Finale: For the Hope's Peak saga, making way for V3.
  • Large Ham: Gundham as usual. He wins the Ultimate Falconer's falcon over to his side through sheer hamminess alone.
  • Improbable Weapon User:
    • Akane uses two pieces of meat on the bone to protect herself from the Ultimate Street Performer's fire-breathing attack. She then uppercuts him with one of the pieces of meat while complimenting him for cooking it perfectly.
    • Mikan jabs the Ultimate Nailist in the ass with a gigantic syringe similar to the one featured in her own execution.
  • No-Sell: A Future Foundation sniper is already wearing ear protection for her rifle, so is immune to Ibuki's "music". Mahiru hits her with a Blinding Camera Flash and removes the ear protection while she's dazed.
  • Not Quite Dead: Kyoko was actually placed in a coma thanks to the special drug she obtained from Seiko's body, which slowed down the effects of the poison. This gave Mikan enough time to revive her.
  • Now That's Using Your Teeth!: Akane catches several knives thrown by the Ultimate Street Performer in her teeth and chomps them into smithereens.
  • Retcon: Subverted, the prior retcon that implied Kamukura to be the one that created the Chiaki AI is explained: the Neo World Program was set to create an AI to guide the characters based on their memories, a blank AI that Chihiro, not Kamukura created, since everybody wanted to see Chiaki again, the AI created was her.
  • Surprisingly Happy Ending: Not only is the entire cast of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair back, they've been cured of their Ultimate Despair brainwashing, though they're willing to fake still being Despairs for the greater good.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Kazuichi finally manages to get some praise from Sonia after taking out a Monobeast with a swarm of Minimarus.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Prior to the Tragedy, Peko finds herself overpowered by Mukuro despite wielding a katana at that time. Here, she manages to beat a former Ultimate Student with only a Shinai.
    • Kazuichi too. When Nidai (who is too busy fighting the first Monobeast at that time) is caught off guard by a second Monobeast, Kazuchi blows it up.
    • Of all people, Mikan grew enough guts to bail out Hiyoko, immobilize the Ultimate Nailist, and save Kyoko's life. Not to mention, she did these as herself.
  • Took a Level in Kindness:
    • Nagito is less of a Jerkass here than in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair to the point giving an affectionately dramatic admiration speech to Makoto in personal and praising Seiko (who's already dead at this point) for the "Antagonist" antidote, which Kyoko drank to keep her from dying so Mikan can save her at a later time. His "hopegasm" is still there though.
    • After calling Mikan "pig barf", Hiyoko thanks the latter for knocking out the Ultimate Nailist to save her.
    • Sonia is already a Nice Girl to begin with, but she's starting to pay attention towards Kazuichi when she calls his Mini-Mecha Nidai troops "impressive".
  • Universally Beloved Leader: Hajime has a vision of the AI Chiaki, who explains that she was created when the Neo World Program scanned all of the students' memories for their most trusted authority figures, intending to combine traits from all of them into one personality that everyone would feel they could trust. Except that every single one of them saw their beloved Class Rep as their most trusted authority figure, so the program just ended up creating an AI of her.
  • Wooden Katanas Are Even Better: Peko got her ass handed to her when she fought Mukuro with a real katana, but easily defeats another former Ultimate with a bamboo one. Fuyuhiko promptly lampshades it.
  • The Worf Effect: The Elite Mooks that make up the brainwashed Future Foundation agents easily fall to Class 77-B.
  • You Are Not Alone: The entire 77th class is very supportive of Mitarai, and convince him to stop the worldwide broadcast of his hope video.
  • Zero-Approval Gambit: Class 77-B record a video as the Remnants of Despair and claim responsibility for Tengan's Final Killing Game so that the Future Foundation wouldn't look bad by having their boss exposed as the true mastermind. Hagakure takes the video at face value, only for Togami to tell him off.
