Side Despair #11: Goodbye, Hope's Peak High School (さよなら望ヶ峰学園)

Hope's Peak will recite - its death haiku of Despair - for no hope remains.

or, all the loose ends are tied up, Junko kickstarts the Tragedy, and Class 77 bids farewell to Chisa.

  • The Bad Guy Wins: There was just no other way this could end other than Junko successfully masterminding the world's destruction.
  • Continuity Nod: Junko is seen wearing white like in Danganronpa Zero.
  • Call-Forward:
  • Coincidental Dodge: Junko chucks a huge wrench straight at Makoto's head, only for him to slip on a piece of paper and fall on his ass, causing the wrench to sail right over him without him ever even noticing it.
  • Downer Ending: Most of Hope's Peak Academy's students are dead, Yukizome is corrupted by despair, Mitarai is a depressed wreck, the Ultimate Despairs are wreaking havoc on the world, and Junko is setting the stage for the Killing School Life with Mukuro's help. The singular bright spot is that Chiaki's execution turned Izuru against Junko.
  • Faking the Dead: Assisted by Yukizome, the 77th class does this so they can move unhindered as Ultimate Despairs.
  • Hope Spot: Izuru goes off to start plotting against Junko, and The Stinger shows Hajime and AI Chiaki reuniting in the Neo World Program. Anyone who has played the second game knows how that turns out.
  • If I Do Not Return: Jin asks Kizakura to protect his daughter if the shelter plan fails.
  • Memetic Mutation: A rare in-universe example; the Tragedy of Hope's Peak turns despair into a meme, thus helping to cause it to spread worldwide. Izuru even says the word "meme" twice just to cement it.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Sakakura briefly has this reaction when he sees how badly the world ends up during The Tragedy, regretting not telling Munakata about Junko.
  • Punch a Wall: Sakakura after lying to Munakata's face about Junko. Enough times that the wall is cracked and his fists are bloody.
  • The Stinger: We see Hajime and Chiaki meeting in the Neo World Program, as Izuru contemplates whether hope or despair is more predictable. Following this is the announcement of Side:Hope.
  • Time Skip: A small one passes after the title card, symbolized by Junko's attire as seen in Danganronpa Zero.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Izuru keeps Chiaki's hairpin as a memento.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Junko sends all the Reserve Course students a video that brainwashes them into committing suicide, as she believes they're unfit to be Ultimate Despairs.
