Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012 S 2 E 22 Vengeance Is Mine

Go To

Leo stages a rescue for Karai against Splinter's wishes. But Karai won't forgive Shredder for his lies or actions, and insists on getting revenge.

  • Big "NO!": Shredder lets out one after Karai falls into the mutagen vat and screaming out her name.
  • The Bus Came Back: Chromedome makes his first appearance since his debut episode.
    • Villain Decay: And is almost immediately disabled by a simple stab in the chest.
  • Chekhov's Gun: When Baxter is preparing a formula to pour into the mutagen, he accidentally knocks a chemical into the container. At the end, a mutated Karai is revealed to have the ability to revert to human form, showing that Baxter's screw-up provided a way for Karai to call her way from being feral to her sense of self..
  • Death Glare: Splinter gives Shredder a seething one when Saki has the nerve to blame him for Karai's mutation.
  • Diegetic Soundtrack Usage: Mikey hums a few bars of the theme tune twice.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Throughout the episode, Leo's attraction to Karai hinders his focus. This ultimately results in him failing to save Karai from being mutated.
  • Downer Ending: Despite everything the Turtles have done, Karai goes after the Shredder to get revenge, but ends up mutated in the process, meaning Splinter has lost his daughter again, and Shredder in rage at the mutation of his adoptive daughter, with the only logical conclusion being that the feud between the Hamato and Foot clans will only escalate.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: When Karai wonders why Splinter never took revenge against Shredder for everything he's done, he tells her that he has no appetite for revenge, as he's content having his daughter back. Regardless, Karai goes back to kill Shredder, despite that her real father just finished telling her he's happy to leave well enough alone.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: After nearly two seasons of debate and some rather large evidence to the contrary, this episode finally reveals the Shredder does love Karai, even in a twisted way. Though, after mutating into Super Shredder two seasons later, he completely abandons his love for her, due to his mutation causing him to go through a Sanity Slippage.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Though he did not argue against it, Tiger Claw was somewhat unnerved when he believed Shredder was planning to mutate his own daughter. Shredder explicitly informs him this was not the case.
  • Fan Disservice: Karai can change back to human form at will, but still retains the eyes, tongue and teeth of her snake form.
  • Feuding Families: Turns out the current war between the Hamato Clan and Foot Clan is nothing new. In fact, it's just the latest of a long bitter feud between them that's lasted for centuries. Oruku Saki resurrects that feud when he brings back the Foot Clan (with most of them being former Hamato Clan members no less) against Splinter.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The full list of the Shellraiser's ammo include: Smoke Screen, Snaggletooth, Soul Flayer, Poop T.N.T., Pizza Grease, Rad Weekend, Jacks'd Up and Das Boot.
  • Freudian Slip: When Splinter is telling the mutated Miwa to get out of the burning building he accidentally calls her Karai.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: The Shredder placed a captive Karai above a vat of mutagen, as part of his trap for the Turtles. It ends up being a disaster.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: This happens when Shredder's serpent eats a rat.
  • Hope Spot: After the others get captured trying to reach Karai, Leo gets knocked into a cage trap, but his sword prevents it from locking properly. He breaks free and reaches Karai, only for the Shredder to attack him and accidentally break the chain suspending Karai's cage.
  • Irony: Think about how Karai was supposed to grow up in the Hamato Clan and Shredder taking her away while raising her in the Foot Clan since infancy. It turns out that Splinter's own father did the same thing to Shredder when he was a baby, albeit out of pity for an orphaned child. And in fact, upon learning of his true lineage, Oruku Saki betrayed them and rebuilt the Foot Clan... with Karai doing the same when she discovers Splinter is her real father.
    • Another example is when Shredder claimed he had no intention of mutating Karai, however, due to his lust for revenge, that's what happens anyway.
    • Moreover, Shredder has spent the past 15 years pumping Karai with hatred for the "man who killed her mother". When it's revealed that he (and not Splinter) was responsible for Tang Shen's death, this plays out very badly, and Karai becomes fixated on taking revenge against Shredder. Even more ironic, she goes ahead with retaliating against Shredder, despite her father voicing he's not interested in vengeance, and was content having his daughter back.
  • Just Whistle: Donnie uses a dog whistle to defeat Tiger Claw. Apparently, it works on tigers too.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: Invoked in Shredder's plan, where the mutagen has been specifically made to give the victim the instincts of a rat snake, thus meaning the turtles (as the intended victims) will see Splinter as nothing but prey. It's subverted as Karai is able to regain some self control after being mutated and lets Splinter go, likely thanks to Baxter Stockman screwing it up in the last minute.
  • Multiple Head Case: Mutated Karai's initial form.
  • Never My Fault: Shredder suspends Karai over a vat of mutagen as bait for the turtles. Leonardo tries to free Karai. Shredder then attacks Leonardo, accidentally severing the chain holding Karai's cage up in the process and causing her to fall into the mutagen. Splinter was nowhere near any of this as it all went down, but, naturally, Shredder's response to this is to instantly blame him for it.
  • Never Trust a Trailer: More of the episode description. Leo never got captured, but Karai did... again.
    • Rather amusingly, Leo is the only protagonist in the episode to NOT get captured at any point.
    • Leo was captured, the difference is that he's the only one who escaped his cage.
  • Pet the Dog: Tiger Claw hates Karai, but consoles Shredder after she's been mutated, upon seeing how upset he is, and assures his master that vengeance will come.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Shredder thinks so.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Karai's reaction when Shredder addresses her as his daughter at the beginning of the episode.
Karai: I am not. Your. DAUGHTER!!
  • Revenge Before Reason:
    • Karai tries to make Shredder pay when she finds out the truth about her mother. Even though her new family tries dissuading her from seeking vengeance (or at least immediate retribution immediately after she is freed), she decides to sneak off to end the Shredder herself. Keep in mind that the Turtles together could not beat him and Karai has lived long enough with him to know just how skilled the Shredder is, so one has to ask what she was thinking.
    • Again with Shredder, due to his careless mistake in attacking Leonardo, he cuts the chain to Karai's cage and Karai ends up mutated into a three headed snake.
      • Shredder almost does it again, insisting on battling Splinter in a building catching fire. Tiger Claw barely manages to convince him to withdraw.
  • Say My Name: Both Splinter and Shredder scream out Karai's name (in Splinter's case he calls her name of Miwa) when she falls into the mutagen vat.
  • Scaled Up: An unintentional variant.
  • Slasher Smile: Karai makes one at the end after reverting back to human from a serpent before showing that she's now part mutant and hardly human.
  • Spanner in the Works: It's implied that Baxter Stockman was this. He ends up accidentially screwing up a certain batch of mutagen he was working on. It's implied this mess-up is what prevents the mutagen from being fully transforming Karai into a feral mutant and thus allowing her to slowly regain consciousness.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Mutated Karai appeared to be a mindless beast before asking, "Father?"
  • This Is a Drill: The Footbots have shown this.
  • Tonight, Someone Dies: "This ends tonight!" said by Karai when she goes after the Shredder for revenge.
  • Tragic Monster: Karai ends up Mutated into a 3 headed snake creature all because she decided to go after Shredder alone, despite Leo and Splinter saying that was a bad idea, and because Shredder was so blinded by his hatred and focused on getting revenge on Splinter that he didn't think before he acted.
  • Traintop Battle: Karai vs Tiger Claw on the Shellraiser.
  • Vengeance Feels Empty: When Karai demands to know why Splinter never tried to pursue revenge against Shredder after everything he's done, Splinter replies that revenge is pointless and only leads to more pain. Sadly, this ends up flying right over Karai's head.
  • Was Once a Man: Karai. The final scene plays with it a bit, showing her revert back to a human form that has reptile features.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Turns out Splinter and Shredder were raised as brothers and even close as them, their rivalry being nothing more but a brotherly one. The events that transpire as adults destroy that brotherhood.
  • Wham Episode: The full depth of the conflict between the Foot and Hamato clans is revealed, Karai finally accepts Splinter as her father and disowns the Shredder, but is mutated into a semi-sentient serpent.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Splinter is only reunited with Karai for a short time before she mutates into a snake.
