Go To

Mikey drags Raph along to a comic book convention, but gets more than he expected when Raph stops a villain from stealing a cape and turns into the new Green Mantle. Frustrated that his brother now has super powers and he doesn't, Mikey tries to take the Green Mantle cape for himself, but Raph's not giving up his new-found powers without a fight.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Breather Episode: A superhero adventure unrelated to the season's main storylines.
  • Brought Down to Badass: The end reveals that the Green Mantle still wanted to help people after losing his cape. He became a police officer and was on the force for 25 years before retiring. He then became a security guard.
"Protecting the public is just in my blood. Turns out you don't need super powers to fight crime in this world. [puts the fixed cape on] Of course, they don't hurt, either."
  • The Bus Came Back: The last time Dr. Malignus appeared officially was in the first season. In this second-to-final episode of the entire series, he reappears once again for one final hurrah against Michelangelo and Raphael.
  • Captain Ersatz: Green Mantle is one of Green Lantern: specifically Hal Jordan. He's even called Al Gordon.
  • Clothes Make the Superman: The Green Mantle cape, which endows its wearers with several super-powers. When Raph and Mikey fight over it, it gets ripped in half—splitting the powers between the pieces.
  • Continuity Nod: All the way back to Season 1, with Mikey recalling how he helped the Silver Sentry against Dr. Malignus. Malignus is also the main villain of this episode.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: The restored Green Mantle leads one off.
  • Foreshadowing: Mikey says only a few Splinter data bits still need to be found.
  • Lantern Jaw of Justice: Anyone who wears the Green Mantle cape
  • Mythology Gag: The news reporter from 'Channel 6 News' has short auburn hair and a canary yellow jacket.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: After Dr. Malignus reveals the yellow thimble, Raph and Mikey are practically beaten. However, Malignus keeps yammering on about how the thimble affects them so long as they wear the Green Mantle cape, so they throw their pieces at him.
  • Shout-Out/ Parody Name:
    • The New York Comic Caucus is an obvious reference to the New York Comic Con.
    • Mikey's proposed sidekick name for Raph is Tortoise Boy, the Shell Wonder. The costume, of course, resembles Robin.
  • The Teaser: Showing how the Green Mantle lost his cape.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Raph had refused to be the Turtle Titan's sidekick, but after defeating Dr. Malignus, he (reluctantly) accepts the Tortoise Boy name.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Whoever wears the Green Mantle's cape is practically invincible, but there is one weakness: a yellow thimble from the planet where the cape was woven.
  • Written-In Absence: Raph and Mikey note that Leo and Don are searching for Splinter data bits in cyber-space, while Casey and April are busy with wedding planning.
