Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 S 6 E 13 The Journal

The Turtles find April and Casey's journal, and decide to read about what happens to them in their future. But Master Splinter warns them not to, as the results could be disastrous to their timeline. Despite his wise words, the boys simply must know, so they sneak back in the night and start to read the journal...

This episode provides examples of

  • Brain in a Jar: Donny's story involves him being in a starship accident and the Utroms only being able to save his brain.
  • Cruel Twist Ending: Invoked with Raph's story. After he and Casey beat up the Purple Dragons, a Foot Mystic randomly appears out of nowhere and traps them on a deserted island, where they're stranded for three years.
  • Fridge Logic: Rare in-universe example. When the Turtles find what appears to be April's journal, from which Cody learned about the Turtles, they all sneak in to read it late at night. However, as they get to the end of Raphael's story, they notice contradictions between the story and what they already know about recent history. Just then, Cody and Splinter enter and reveal that they had replaced the journal with a fake to teach the Turtles a lesson.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: Invoked at the end. Splinter admits he grew tired making up stories by the ending of Raph's, so he just threw in the Foot Mystic twist to get it over with.
  • Happily Ever After: The "Welcome Back" page of the journal.
"I know how the story ends, and you guys are gonna love it."
  • Out of Order: Fast Forward was aired before Season 5, so this applies to the entire season, but it's particularly noteworthy for this episode since the fake journal stories spoil some developments: the new members of the Justice Force, the Ninja Tribunal being alive and well, and Karai being on good terms with Leonardo.
  • Prophecy Twist: Leo read about there being a traitor in the Ninja Tribunal's temple. He tries to avert it by confronting Karai, only to look like a traitor for it. Chikara also warned him of this trope by noting how prophecies can be misinterpreted.
  • Secret Keeper: The episode highlights how Cody already knows what will happen to the Turtles once they get home and nonetheless keeps it a secret.
  • Shout-Out: Mikey as the Turtle Titan says "My turtle sense was tingling"
  • Spin-Off Babies: In Mikey's story, the Justice Force are turned back into babies by Big Bad Binky Boy's weapon.
  • Temporal Paradox: The reason Splinter and Cody don't want the Turtles to read the journal.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Donny's story ends with his brain being put in Serling. Oh Crap! ensues.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: In Leo's story, he suspects Karai of being a traitor.
