Recap / Stargirl 2020 S 2 E 05 Summer School Chapter Five

Go To

The JSA continues their search for Eclipso, while Cindy tries to recruit Cameron to her cause. Eclipso takes over the art teacher, forcing Stargirl and the others to deal with him. Meanwhile, Mike's attempts to be useful to the JSA continue and The Shade confronts Barbara once more.

Tropes:

  • Almost Kiss: Courtney and Cameron almost attempt this, only to be interrupted by Yolanda's texts.
  • Blob Monster: Eclipso presents itself as one when operating through Deisinger's paints.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • When The Shade confronts Barbara again, they reference the card he gave her before.
    • Zeke is selling all the stop signs Thunderbolt made a few episodes ago for $5 a pop.
    • When Courtney has to go, Cameron references all the times she stood him up or left him last season.
    • When Cindy first tries to recruit Cameron directly, he remembers how cold she was when her own mother died.
    • Courtney brings up to Pat what Richard told her in the previous episode. That there is a difference between "bad" and "evil".
  • Cosmic Horror: Eclipso initially presents itself as one of these before trying to haunt the JSA with their individual fears.
  • Demonic Possession: Cindy bumps into the art teacher, Mr. Deisinger, which allows a piece of Eclipso to possess him.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Cameron practically says this to Cindy when she gives her condolences to him about his father, but only because he knows Cindy truly isn't sorry.
  • Enemy Mine: Since the Shade willingly shared information on Eclipso, Courtney wants to work with him. Pat shoots the idea down, saying that while they have the same goal regarding the black diamond, the Shade isn't on their side.
  • Fair-Play Villain: Artemis was mildly upset over the fact that Cindy wasn't able to recruit Cameron for the Injustice Unlimited, noting that it was just herself, Isaac and Cindy constituting so and therefore one member short if they were to go up against the younger members of the new JSA.
  • Fear of Thunder: Max the bulldog is scared of thunderstorms. Pat eventually relents and allows the dog to sleep in his and Barbara's bed.
  • Go into the Light: Stargirl shouts at Mr. Deisinger to do this so he can break free from Eclipso, though in this case, the "light" in question is the light energy from the Cosmic Staff.
  • Immediate Sequel: After the flashback to Cindy's past, the episode proper starts with Stargirl returning from her late night search of The Shade, with Pat waiting for her in the bedroom.
  • Internal Reveal: Beth tells her parents that she knows about their upcoming divorce and confronts them about it.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Cindy calls Icicle a loser who was shattered into ice cubes by a pickup truck in front of Lily. Lily comes pretty close to freezing her for the slight.
    • Cindy used the black diamond on Mr. Deisinger, because she got angry at Cameron for calling him out (and she hated taking his art class).
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Cindy is initially defiant when Lily warns her to stay away from Cameron, but when Lily demonstrates that she has ice powers, as well, Cindy backs down. Though she does try again with Cameron directly, she gives up when he makes it clear he doesn't buy her fake sympathy.
  • Large Ham: Mr. Deisigner when Eclipso has full control of his body.
  • A Minor Kidroduction: The episode opens on Cindy as a child waking up from a nightmare, worried that her father is going to make her like him. Her mother assures her he won't find them, only for him to emerge from the shadows as soon as she leaves the room, followed by the screen going black while Cindy screams.
  • The Muse: Mr. Deisinger tells Cameron that Courtney is his after seeing his drawings. When Eclipso starts influencing Deisinger, he refers to himself as one.
  • Mythology Gag: Paul Deisinger, the art teacher, is the real identity of a Starter Villain from the Stargirl comics known as Paintball.
  • Never Mess with Granny: Cindy acquiesces to Lily's insistence that she leave Cameron alone after the latter reveals that she has ice powers and will gladly use them if her hand is forced.
  • Oh, Crap!: The brief look of horror on Cindy's face when Lily reveals she has ice powers of her own and not only has taken umbrage to her insulting her son but she's perfectly willing to stand up for her grandson is a thing of beauty. No wonder Cindy very quickly decides to back down.
  • Personal Horror: Once Eclipso traps the JSA in the school, he shows them personal fears to increase their despair.
    • Rick's is whether he or Grundy is the real monster.
    • Yolanda's is, once again, her guilt over killing Brainwave and her issues regarding Henry and his death.
    • Beth's is her parents going through with the divorce, with her being the reason for it.
  • The Reveal: Cameron's grandmother also has ice powers, while Cameron's begin to manifest.
  • Room Full of Crazy: Deisinger covers the art room in paintings of the black diamond thanks to Eclipso manipulating him.
  • Ship Tease:
    • This episode has plenty between Cameron and Courtney.
    • Early on we get another brief Rick/Beth moment.
  • Supernatural Fear Inducer: Simply being near Deisinger allows Eclipso to bring out the worst fears of the JSA. Only Courtney is spared, thanks to the Cosmic Staff's light. Pat takes this as proof that Eclipso is growing stronger, if his powers no longer require physical or visual contact with the diamond.
  • Talk About the Weather: Yolanda uses this to try and ward off Courtney from flirting with Cameron until they stop Eclipso. Given that their search is for abnormal weather patterns, it also had a double meaning.
  • The Un-Hug: When Beth confronts her parents over their divorce, both of them stumble until telling her they'll talk about it later. When trying to comfort her, both parents give her a very unconvincing hug. Her dad lightly wraps his arms around Beth while her mother only wraps one arm like they were merely acquaintances rather than family.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Eclipso makes Deisinger think he's vomiting up paint.
  • Weakened by the Light: Stargirl is able to banish Eclipso from Deisinger using the light of the Cosmic Staff.
  • Weather Manipulation: Eclipso being active is causing an unusual storm to brew over Blue Valley and the areas surrounding it.
  • Wham Shot: In the final scene of the episode, Cameron starts manifesting ice powers.
