Recap / Stargirl (2020) S1E04 "Wildcat"

Go To

Courtney recruits Yolanda Montez to be the new Wildcat.

Tropes:

  • 10-Minute Retirement: Yolanda initially decides not to be the new Wildcat because she wants to rebuild her own life, but when her parents flatly reject her attempt to apologize, she changes her mind. Courtney helps her decision along by dropping the Wildcat suit off in her room, along with a note asking for her help.
  • Absence of Evidence: Principal Bowen visiting Brainwave to do a short violin solo is weird enough, but Courtney and Yolanda conclude she's probably a member of the Injustice Society because she didn't sign in as a visitor, meaning she wanted it to be off the books.
  • Abusive Parents: Yolanda's parents have had her grounded for three months with no sign in sight of stopping, forbid her from going to church to avoid embarrassment, and refuse to forgive her for accidentally getting branded a slut. It gives the impression they care more about family image than their daughter's well-being. They presumably also berate her cousin for defending her.
  • Armor-Piercing Question:
Pat: I'll report [the Injustice Society] to the authorities.
Courtney: What if they are the authorities?
  • Artistic License – Education: The next episode, taking place shortly after this one, is a Halloween Episode. That would place the Cold Open of this episode in July, a time when US schools aren't usually in session.
  • Artistic License – Law: While Yolanda committed a misdemeanor herself, Henry and Cindy should've been arrested for possession and distribution of child pornography, but it's implied that the two of them got off scot-free. Given that the Injustice Society has a hand in the local government, it's possible this was a case of Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!.
  • Atrocious Alias: Yolanda shares Courtney's opinion that "Injustice Society of America" is this.
  • Ceiling Cling: Yolanda does this to avoid being spotted by Henry Jr. after she accidentally bumps into a tray.
  • Clothes Make the Superman: The Wildcat costume enhances the wearer's natural agility, comes with a set of Wolverine Claws, and allows the wearer to jump from great heights and land without a scratch.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Courtney points out to Pat the possibility that the Injustice Society has infiltrated Blue Valley's entire infrastructure. After Denise's ominous parting words and discovering the remains of her damaged car, he begins to wonder if Courtney was right.
  • Conveniently Timed Distraction: Yolanda accidentally knocks down a piece of brick while scaling the hospital wall just as a security guard is exiting the building, but at the same time Beth shows up and starts chatting with him, making him disregard it.
  • A Day in the Limelight: This episode primarily focuses on Yolanda becoming the new Wildcat.
  • Defiled Forever: Yolanda's mother acts this way about the selfie incident, telling Yolanda that she has disgraced herself and can never go back to being the person she was before. This pushes Yolanda to embrace the Wildcat identity.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Courtney wants Yolanda to jump off a building as a test of her powers, since the Wikipedia article about Wildcat said that she would be able to do so unharmed. Yolanda points out that they have no proof that information is reliable, and unlike the other tests they did, this one involves her risking her life. Courtney concedes her point. Yolanda works up the nerve to do it at the end of the episode, jumping out of her second story window and landing without a scratch.
    • Courtney nearly kills the power to the entire intensive care ward without considering the fact that pretty much all the patients there are on life support. The staff stops her before she can and messes up the janitor's closet as an alternative distraction.
  • Disappointed in You: Yolanda's parents over the nude selfie incident, to the point that they refuse to forgive her when she asks them to.
  • Election Day Episode: The episode begins with a flashback in which Yolanda beat Cindy in the election for student body president. However, soon after her victory, she discovers that the nude selfie she sent to Henry Jr. was distributed to the entire school, destroying her reputation and leaving her branded a slut.
  • Enemy Mine: Invoked by Courtney when she reveals to Yolanda that she blew up Henry's car, in an attempt to find common cause in their mutual dislike of him. This gets Yolanda to open up.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Henry Jr. may be a Jerk Jock, but he's clearly horrified by Cindy's prank on Yolanda.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: It takes sharing their mutual dislike of Henry Jr., helping Yolanda figure out the Wildcat suit's powers and breaking into the hospital for Courtney and Yolanda to finally begin forging a friendship.
  • Flashback: The episode opens on a flashback three months prior, showing the events that led to Yolanda being ostracized as a slut.
  • Go to Your Room!: Yolanda's father stubbornly says this in response to her heartfelt apology, much to her heartbreak.
  • Godzilla Threshold: Stargirl's appearance has spooked Icicle enough that he's willing to have Dragon King build a machine that would seemingly kill quite a lot of people once activated just to ensure the success of Project New America. As Dragon King puts it, "one generation's ultimate sacrifice will protect the next."
  • Hate Sink: Aside from Cindy, Yolanda's parents definitely establish themselves as loathsome people for refusing to forgive their daughter and treating her like crap after an embarrassing incident. In fact, even after Yolanda apologizes, they heartlessly tell her that she's disgraced the family and she'll never be the girl she once was, even berating their nephew for defending Yolanda.
  • Hope Spot: After Yolanda gives a heartfelt apology to her family, it seems like they will forgive her. Unfortunately, her parents are unmoved by this and say that she has disgraced the family.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Yolanda spends a good chunk of the episode figuring out the Wildcat suit's powers with Courtney's help.
  • Impossibly Cool Clothes: The Wildcat costume doesn't look like much at first, but once you put the cowl on, it not only changes size to fit the wearer, but also enhances their balance and agility, as well as tricking them out with a set of Wolverine Claws.
  • Intimate Telecommunications: Yolanda took a nude selfie of herself to send to Henry Jr. Unfortunately, Cindy got ahold of it and distributed it to the whole school to get back at Yolanda for dating Henry and winning the election.
  • Kick the Dog: Cindy ruined Yolanda's reputation by mass-texting a nude selfie Yolanda took for Henry to the entire school.
  • Malevolent Masked Man: Dr. Ito, AKA Dragon King, exudes the most sinister presence seen from any villain on the show to date, and judging by his slitted pupils and scaly skin around his eyes, he's definitely no ordinary man under that hood of his.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Yolanda assumes Henry Jr. shared her nude selfie with Cindy, who in turn distributed it to the whole school. However, Henry tries to keep the phone from her when she first sees it and is clearly horrified when it goes out, implying Cindy stole the selfie without his knowledge.
  • Mundane Solution: Courtney and Yolanda look up Wildcat's powers on Wikipedia.
  • Mythology Gag: Courtney's "Half Day" T-shirt is lifted directly from the comics.
  • Noodle Incident: The Shade betrayed the Injustice Society, though we don't get the particulars.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: The selfie incident. Despite Yolanda wanting to forget about it and move on, her parents seem deadset on never forgiving her for it.
  • Pet the Dog: Yolanda's cousin is the only one who doesn't hold it against her for the selfie incident. Her dad (his uncle) scolds him for defending her.
  • Product Placement: Pop-Tarts make a couple of appearances.
  • Rejected Apology: Yolanda tries to apologize to her parents for the selfie incident, but they stubbornly refuse to accept it.
  • Revenge: When Yolanda finds Henry Jr. visiting his father at the hospital, she whips out her claws to make him pay for supposedly ruining her life. After seeing his grief over his father's condition, however, she can't go through with it.
  • Saying Too Much: Denise tells Pat not to trust the town, but then tells him to forget everything she said. This may be what got her killed.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
    • Denise tries to leave town, suspecting foul play behind her husband's death. Her car winds up in the pick-and-pull the next day, all smashed up.
    • Yolanda's cousin leaves the room when the rest of the family refuses to forgive her.
  • Sequel Hook: Beth spots Stargirl and Wildcat scaling the hospital wall as she leaves the building, and knows the latter is Yolanda because Courtney refers to her by name.
  • Shoulders-Up Nudity: Yolanda is only seen from the shoulders up as she's taking the nude selfie.
  • Sore Loser: Cindy mass-texted the photo of Yolanda after losing the student body president election to her.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Yolanda talking herself up with a "No More Holding Back" Speech doesn't make her any less fearful of jumping off a building to test her powers.
  • Uncertain Doom: While in the junkyard searching for Catepillar tracks for S.T.R.I.P.E., Pat comes across the Zarick's pet cat which leads him to Denise Zarick's damaged car with her son's magician hat still inside, but no sign of Denise herself.
  • Wall Crawl: Yolanda uses the claws of the Wildcat costume to scale the side of the hospital up to the room Brainwave is being kept in.
  • We Need a Distraction: To help Yolanda, Courtney tries to kill the power to the intensive care ward, only to be stopped by the Cosmic Staff when it makes her realize she'll hurt everyone on life support. Instead, it opts to trash the janitor's closet so the nurse on duty will investigate the noise.
  • Wham Shot:
    • As Courtney and Yolanda are leaving the hospital, it's revealed they were seen by Beth. What's more, she heard Courtney say Yolanda's name.
    • Pat finds Denise's SUV at the pick-and-pull, smashed up with all her belongings missing save Joey's magician hat. In fact the whole scene leading up to this is one long Wham Shot, since as soon as the audience recognizes the cat, they will know something bad has happened and be watching in suspense until the final slow reveal and pullback.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Yolanda is presented with an opportunity to get Revenge on Henry Jr. without getting caught, but restrains herself when she sees how distraught he is over his dad being in a coma.
  • With Us or Against Us: Due to Yolanda's cousin not holding the selfie incident against her, he's not in their parents' good graces either.
  • Working Out Their Emotions: Courtney finds Yolanda angrily beating up a punching bag at the school's gym after Cindy mass-texted her selfie.
  • You Are Grounded!: Yolanda's parents have grounded her over the selfie incident, not even taking her to church out of embarrassment, and three months later show no willingness to retract it. This shows them as being truly despicable people.
