Recap / Star vs. the Forces of Evil S3 E20 "Death Peck"

Go To

Star urges the royal youth of Mewni to sign a petition calling for the equal treatment of Monsters, but runs into trouble convincing Rich Pigeon of the Pigeon Kingdom.

Tropes:

  • Artificial Limbs:
    • Turns out Rich Pigeon's human legs were just accessories he wore at the Silver Bell Ball. Pony Head finds a room with these.
    • The pigeon executioner's strong, ripped arms are actually detachable, and he places them in a case.
  • Aroused by Their Voice: Pony Head is quite taken by Rich Pigeon's voice. She even calls it a "strong handsome man voice".
  • Artistic License – Ornithology: At the end, the pigeon feast turns out to be a huge pile of worms, but pigeons don't really eat worms, they eat mostly seeds and small fruit.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • Pony Head says she found something. Star and Marco see her dancing on top of a pair of human legs, but it turns out she found a giant pair of legs to help them escape.
    • The pigeon executioner crashes through the wall of the room the heroes are caged. Turns out his strong arms are fake and he doesn't use the axe, instead uses the axe as a perch and proceeds pecking Marco in the forehead.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: The Pigeons may look dumb and harmless, but when Marco accidentally injures the crown prince, they prove themselves to be quite dangerous. They even killed the previous inhabitants of the castle when they took it for themselves.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Star accidentally got her wand and fetching stick mixed up, and ended taking the latter by mistake.
  • Call-Back: Two to "Club Snubbed".When Rich Pigeon proves uncooperative at first, Pony Head wonders if he is the same guy who danced so well at the club. Also, she finds his pair of legs from that episode later on.
  • Chekhov's Gag: At one point, Marco steps on a skull full of pigeon guano. It belonged to one of the castle's previous inhabitants, before the pigeons took it by force.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: For injuring the prince and all the other chaos they caused, Star, Marco, and Ponyhead are sentenced to "Death by a Thousand Pecks", which involves a pigeon executioner repeatedly pecking Marco in the forehead. Fortunately, this gives Rich Pigeon time to show up and demand they be set free.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: As Pony Head agrees with Marco that the Pigeons' castle looks creepy.
Pony Head: Yeah, Marco's right! Whoa... did I just say that out loud?
  • Fantastic Racism: As it turns out, the pigeon people are prejudiced against Mewmans, so the peace that exists between them is very fragile.
  • Feather Fingers: Although not treated as such throughout the episode (the executioner has to use its beak to pull off its second Artificial Limb), Rich Pigeon uses his wing to sign Star's petition.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: You can briefly see the others who have signed Star's friendship petition include Tom Lucitor, Princess Pony Head (who signed with her real name, Lilacia), and several of the guests from "Club Snubbed". It also reveals Rich Pigeon's real name at the end: Richard Pigeon.
  • Hidden Depths: Marco displays quite a bit of knowledge in art history, able to critique the paintings in Rich Pigeon's gallery.
  • I Can't Believe I'm Saying This: Ponyhead finds herself surprised to agree with Marco saying that talking to Rich Pigeon seems to be a waste of time.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: Marco claims he knows how to properly handle a bird's foot by having watched multiple bird videos online. It doesn't work.
  • It's Quiet… Too Quiet: While trying to pilot the extra-large set of spare legs they found, Star points out that the pigeons have suddenly gone quiet. The trio are relieved... until the Pigeons break in through the floor beneath them.
  • Kangaroo Court: Marco suspects the trial would be unfair, since the heroes can't understand what the pigeons' are saying.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Subverted. When Marco accidentally breaks Rich Pigeon's leg, he has no reaction as Marco tries to fix him. When he falls from his perch, however, he starts wriggling in pain on the ground.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • A literal example. If only Marco hadn't broken Rich Pigeon's leg while attempting to get his signature, the heroes wouldn't be chased by a flock of angry birds.
    • When Star tries to defuse the situation as the heroes are cornered, Pony Head drops the injured prince, believing she could use him as leverage.
  • Nobody Here but Us Statues: Star, Marco, and Ponyhead are able to briefly avoid the flock of furious Pigeons by posing as statues.
Marco: I told you, birds can't see what doesn't move!
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: If Rich Pigeon's speech is to be believed, the Pigeons have been pretending to be mindless birds for a long time.
  • Punny Name: It turns out Rich Pigeon's name is actually Richard.
  • Rousing Speech: As he reveals he can talk, Rich Pigeon gives a speech convincing the pigeons to join Star's cause for justice. It works.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: As per Rich Pigeon's speech, learning the Mewni tongue is against his kingdom's law, but he did it for its future.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Pony Head decides she's had enough of the Pigeon kingdom when the "feast" Prince Rich offers them turns out to be a pile of worms.
  • Shout-Out: As the heroes scramble to operate the giant pair of legs, it does all erratic sorts of dance moves, one of them being a Moonwalk.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Rich Pigeon turns out to be able to talk, and gives a Rousing Speech in favor of Star's petition for peace.
Rich Pigeon: Yes, father, I disobeyed Pigeon law and learned the Mewni tongue, but I did it for our kingdom's future!
  • Synchronized Swarming: The pigeons move as a single heavy mass, smashing through walls, forming shapes, and even making barricades.
  • There Was a Door: Indeed there was one in the room where the heroes were caged in, but the executioner made his entrance with a huge hole in the wall nearby.
  • Toilet Humor: The Pigeon palace is absolutely covered in guano.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Marco keeps underestimating the Pigeons, even as they continuously pursue him.
  • Unfortunate Item Swap: Star was playing fetch with Glossaryk, and she was supposed to throw a stick (which is approximately the same length as her wand). In the worst streak of luck possible, Star realized she threw her wand and took the stick by mistake.
  • The Unintelligible: The pigeons speak as pigeons do, so naturally no-one can understand them. Rich Pigeon is the only one that can speak mewman language, in defiance of their laws.
  • Vocal Dissonance: It turns out that Rich Pigeon can talk, and as Pony Head describes, in "a strong, handsome, man voice too".
  • We Have Forgotten the Phlebotinum: Star realizes too late she accidentally left her wand at home, having accidentally swapped it with a stick that she was using to play fetch with Glossaryck, and is unable to use it to fight off the angry pigeons.
  • You Can Talk?: To the shock of the heroes (and the audience), Rich Pigeon reveals he can talk.
