The Krusty Krab Crew has a problem on their hands when SpongeBob finds an urchin.
"Eek, an Urchin!" contains examples of:
- Agony of the Feet: Happens to SpongeBob, Squidward, and Mr. Krabs when they are standing on the grill that is still turned on whilst escaping from the urchin. They end up leaping straight to the bathroom where they douse their feet off in the toilets.
- Bait-and-Switch Comment: "This is terrible! ...You should never put that much ketchup on a Krabby Patty."
- Dragged into Drag: SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs forcibly disguise Plankton as a female sea urchin, by hollowing out Squidward's cactus and stuffing him inside it. It works a little too well as there's really hundreds of urchins in the Krusty Krab and all of them have the hots for the cepopod.
- Eek, a Mouse!!: With urchin in place of mouse.
- Enemy Mine: Plankton helps the Krusty Krab crew settle a sea urchin infestation, because "he can't steal the formula with vermin running around".
- Even Evil Has Standards: Plankton hates vermin to the point he refuses to steal the secret formula while one is present and joins the Krusty Krab crew in getting rid of it.
- Excited Episode Title!: "Eek, an Urchin!"
- Eye Scream: SpongeBob tries to spray a blob of ketchup on the floor but ends up spraying his eyes instead.
- Fantastic Vermin: A sea urchin invades the Krusty Krab's kitchen much like a mouse would, and the crew trying to find a way to get it out of the restaurant.
- Going in Circles: Mr. Krabs sends SpongeBob far away to set the sea urchins free, but every time SpongeBob asks if he is far enough away, Mr. Krabs says no. SpongeBob eventually ends up letting the sea urchins back into the Krusty Krab, much to Mr. Krabs' horror.
- Harmless Freezing: Squidward eventually suggests to the crew that they should lower the kitchen's thermostat at its coldest, which freezes the whole kitchen along with the urchins and Plankton. When the others turn up the heat again, both Plankton and the urchins end up unharmed as they defrost.
- Here We Go Again!: The episode ends with SpongeBob putting the urchins in a trash can as far away as possible, but then he releases it at the Krusty Krab.
- Instant Ice: Just Add Cold!: Squidward turns down the thermostat to freeze Plankton and the sea urchins.
- I Want My Mommy!: Plankton yells "Mommy!" when he gets attacked by the sea urchins.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: After getting all the urchins in a trash can, Mr. Krabs tasks SpongeBob in releasing them far away from the Krusty Krab as possible. But he's proven to be finicky on how far is enough, which ends with SpongeBob going around to back where he started and inadvertently releasing the urchins into the Krusty Krab again.
- Nothing Exciting Ever Happens Here: Squidward laments this trope almost word by word. Suddenly SpongeBob tries calling for his help, and he immediately regrets saying that.
- Not-So-Innocent Whistle: Done by SpongeBob when Mr. Krabs yells his name at the end of the episode.
- Not So Stoic: For once, Squidward is just as afraid of the urchin as SpongeBob, and it shows how serious the situation is.
- Pest Episode: SpongeBob, Mr. Krabs and Squidward deal with an infestation of urchins.
- Punch-Clock Villain: Plankton when he finds out the Krusty Krab has a pest problem.
- Screaming at Squick: Everyone does this when they realize the Krusty Krab is infested with sea urchins.
- Sea Hurtchin: An urchin is found inside the Krusty Krab and is treated as a pest.

After Squidward's groceries are stolen, SpongeBob and Sandy teach him karate to protect himself.
"Squid Defense" contains examples of:
- Blatant Lies: Squidward continues to exaggerate how scary and threatening his stalker is each time he's taught a new karate lesson, when the most he did was just march up menacingly to him without saying a word. By the time he swears revenge, the viewer is clear of what his intentions really are.
- Downer Ending: Squidward beats up the guy who scared him, but it turns out he wanted to return Squidward's groceries to him. Squidward then gets arrested for this.
- Half the Man He Used to Be:
- When SpongeBob tries to karate-chop a board in half, he tears himself in half instead, but remains alive and conscious. Like in "I Had an Accident", the two halves appear to have minds of their own, and when one half starts to suggest that Squidward should visit Sandy, the other half chimes in, then both halves laugh.
- Later, Sandy karate-chops a board (and SpongeBob) in half.
- Then Squidward manages to do the same after he finally gets the hang of karate.
- Never My Fault: Squidward claims the random guy stole his food, when in reality, he just dropped them.
- No Sympathy for Grudgeholders: Sandy notes to Squidward that karate is used for protection and not revenge, and chews him out for it when he boasts "vengeance is mine". After learning how to defend himself through karate, Squidward goes to beat up a thug that tries to steal his groceries earlier, but finds out that he was going to return them to him. SpongeBob and Sandy scold Squidward for breaking his promise by using karate for revenge and not self-defense and take back his karate belt, followed by Squidward being arrested.
- Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: The big guy who scared Squidward wasn't really a thug, and he wanted to return Squidward's groceries to him.
- O.O.C. Is Serious Business: SpongeBob is ashamed of Squidward for using his karate for vengeance. You know you’re in trouble, now.
- Post-Robbery Trauma: Squidward suffers this. However, he takes his revenge a bit too far...
- Shout-Out: Squidward doing chores as a way to learn karate is a reference to The Karate Kid.
- Wax On, Wax Off: Sandy teaches Squidward karate and tells him that in order to learn it, he must "master the movements of every day". He later fights his opponent with moves such as "watering Sandy's lawn" and "taking out Sandy's trash".
- What the Hell, Hero?: SpongeBob to Squidward after breaking his promise by using karate for revenge: "For shame, Squidward, for shame."
