Original air date: 1/29/2011 (produced in 2010) note

SpongeBob and Patrick are held hostage by a backwards gang.

Associated Tropes:

  • Blank White Eyes: All the trenchbillies have these, though this is justified, as deep sea creatures don't have the best eyesight.
  • Brick Joke: While jellyfishing, SpongeBob says, "It's now or never." claiming it's something Mr. Krabs says before using bathroom. In the next scene, a hillbilly is entering an outhouse while saying, "It's now or never."
  • Cruel Twist Ending: The episode ends with the Shotgun Wedding described below.
  • Hidden Depths: Ma Angler is a fan of William Shakespeare.
  • Hillbilly Horrors: While the episode isn't very scary, SpongeBob and Patrick were kidnapped and held hostage by a bunch of hillbillies.
  • Iris Out: The episode ends with a heart-shaped one. It's the last of the pre-HD era before it became the standard episode closing as of Season 9B.
  • Shotgun Wedding: The episode ends with Mr. Krabs forced into marriage with Ma Angler after the trenchbillies caught him making "goo-goo eyes" at her.
Cletus: We catch anyone makin' goo-goo eyes like that at our Ma, it can only mean one thing: They's gonna get hitched!
  • Shout-Out: One to Deliverance. Patrick has to beat a huge hillbilly in a banjo contest.
    • Weirdly, while probably unintentional, the episode is also a shoutout to Squidbillies, especially with Ma Angler's design.
  • Special Guest: Amy Sedaris as Ma Angler.
  • Storybook Opening: The episode opens up with an opening book showing the title card.

Legends of Bikini Bottom: Sponge-Cano!

Original air date: 1/28/2011 (produced in 2010) note

Everyone must sacrifice Squidward in order to stop a volcano from destroying Bikini Bottom.

Tropes:

  • Appease the Volcano God: The expert on the subject states that the sacrifice must be the most miserable person in town, which is Squidward, but at the end the volcano somehow gets plugged with his house, which is what he actually meant before he was interrupted.
  • Call-Back: Mr. Krabs calls the cash register "Cashy" like he did in "SpongeBob vs. The Big One".
  • Chekhov's Gun: The busted pipe in Squidward's house, which by the end of the episode builds up enough water for the house to rocket to the volcano.
  • Exact Words: Squidward tells SpongeBob never ever help him again, but as he is hanging on the edge of the volcano, he asks him to help him out of it. SpongeBob reminds Squidward of what he said earlier, but Squidward takes it back and tells him how grateful he is, and so SpongeBob helps him up.
  • Excited Episode Title!: "Sponge-Cano!"
  • Friendship Song: The "Gratitude" song by SpongeBob at the beginning.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Squidward admits to SpongeBob he's grateful for everything which was enough for SpongeBob to save him from the volcano... at least until his house landed on top of it.
Squidward: You know, SpongeBob. In light of everything that just happened... I lied to you! I'm not grateful for anything! I mean look at me. I don't even have a roof to sleep under, anymore!
  • Paying in Coins: A customer try to pay for his Krabby Patty with pennies, but Squidward, being in a very bad mood, doesn't let him.
  • Plug the Volcano: The volcano is ultimately stopped when the crater is plugged by Squidward's house.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Squidward has a few of these.
Squidward: SpongeBob, I hate my job, and I live in a dead end town with neighbors I can't stand. I'm the most miserable person in Bikini Bottom! What do I have to be thankful for?
Squidward: (imitating SpongeBob) But, Squidward, it is imperative that we... (regular voice) NOTHING! I think I'd rather take my chances with the volcano than be stuck in this miserable barnacle hole with you, and the citizens of Dumb-Dumb Town!
    • The citizens give one to Squidward for all of his complaining.
  • Shamed by a Mob: The fish gave glares at Squidward after he shouts how he would rather take chances with the volcano than to be surrounded by everyone in Bikini Bottom and while they were carrying him to the volcano, they call him out on how many times he complains about everyone and everything.
  • Space Whale Aesop: Be grateful or get sacrificed into an active volcano
  • Storybook Opening: The episode opens up with an opening book showing the title card.
  • Sudden Anatomy: Mr. Krabs grows large muscular arms and hands when he strangles SpongeBob and Squidward.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Squidward is more of a Jerkass than usual.
  • Troubled Fetal Position: A random guy does this while everyone panics.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: The entire episode is built around Squidward being this. One, he tells SpongeBob that he's ungrateful for everything and claims himself to be the most miserable person in Bikini Bottom. Then, after SpongeBob offers the citizens to sacrifice him instead, Squidward doesn't thank him and tells him to jump in. And lastly, he even told SpongeBob that he outright lied about being grateful so that SpongeBob would save him from the volcano.
