Recap / Shadows over Meridian, Chapter 14: The battle for Cavigor part 3

Go To

Frost starts the attack that's to end the siege of Cavigor, while the defenders are faced with even more problems in the form of treason.

  • Action Girl: Yoruichi of the White sands is a rebel soldier and Badass Normal who can fare against Razor Khan with her agility.
  • Arrows on Fire: Two are used to tell Frost that the Secret Underground Passage to Cavigor has been excavated open. When he begins the final assault, he has three flaming arrows shot in the air to order the reserve force to enter Cavigor through the tunnel.
  • Asshole Victim: After the Warden defies Vathek's orders by remorselessly ordering all the prisoners to be slaughtered while arrogantly claiming they're undoubtedly Phobos' monsters who deserve death, he's killed when a Razor Khan impales him from behind.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Vathek and Drake let out a simultaneous one when Yoruichi informs them about the soldiers who've decided to slaughter all the inmates.
  • Blood from the Mouth: After the Warden's fatally stabbed by a Razor Khan, blood gurgles out of his throat and mouth.
  • Cliffhanger: With Cavigor's defenses breached and the Warden killed, Vathek, Drake and Yoruichi retreat into the prison to prevent the deserters from killing the prisoners.
  • Continuity Nod: Bulcro is one of Cavigor's guards from "Escape from Cavigor", while the Spikeback is the kind of a creature that Cornelia run into while infiltrating Phobos' castle during "The Mogriffs".
  • Dance Battler: Razor Khan are noted to be almost dancing between attacks thanks to their speed, agility, slender forms and staked feet. Yoruichi is also described to be practically dancing as she brings down many Razor Khan with her agility and grace.
  • Dare to Be Badass: While fighting the Razor Khan, Yoruichi boosts the morale of her fellow soldiers by tauntingly asking if they're really going to let themselves be ended by "a few boogeymen that crawled out of the Abyss of Shadows".
  • Epic Flail: The Spikeback opens the secret tunnel's entrance with a giant iron ball attached to a metal chain.
  • Evil Counterpart: The Warden turns out to be a more Knight Templarish version of the Wardens Are Evil behavior Vathek has started moving past following his recent Heel Realization.
  • Evil Laugh:
    • Frost has one when he sees the defenders' horrified faces upon the entrance of Razor Khan.
    • The soldier who leads the deserters to murder the prisoners on the Warden's orders lets out a dark laugh at the thought of denying Phobos any possible minions.
  • Expy: Vathek and Drake are sided against the Warden's deserters by a purple-haired Action Girl named Yoruichi.
  • Flat "What": Vathek and Drake have this reaction to Frost telling them that he's giving them a chance to surrender because he was asked to.
  • Giant Mook: When Curbag complains about the Sand Dwellers' slow progress on breaking down the seal of the underground tunnel, Bulcro calls in a Spikeback that finally breaks the seal with six strikes of his flail.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Vathek cleaves one of the Razor Khan in two.
  • A House Divided: When the final attack begins, the Warden and his more fanatical soldiers decide to kill all the prisoners in order to deny Frost the victory of freeing them for Phobos. Vathek, Drake, and other more levelheaded soldiers are horrified by this dishonorable act, and only avoid coming to blows due to the more pressing need of preventing Frost's forces from overwhelming the prison.
  • In the Back: A Razor Khan uses its clawed hands to impale the Warden of Cavigor from behind when the latter is busy arguing with Vathek about executing the prisoners.
  • Irony: The former rebel army are now having rebellious cells in their ranks, and the irony isn't lost to Vathek.
  • Knight Templar: The Warden of Cavigor, and at least some of his soldiers, are of the belief that anyone sent to the prison was loyal to Phobos, and that they're therefore justified in unilaterally deciding to kill all the prisoners to prevent Frost from freeing them. The Warden's even in his final breath convinced he's doing Elyon's will.
  • Mook Lieutenant:
    • Bulcro, the Sand Dweller head of Shallowsands, is in charge of breaking down the sealed entrance of the secret underground tunnel.
    • Curbag, the second-in-command of the rhino-rider squads, leads the reserve force that enters the secret tunnel to break into Cavigor.
  • My Name Is Inigo Montoya: When the purple-haired Action Girl leads her men to assist Vathek and Drake without being able to stop the deserters from going to kill the prisoners, she informs them that she's Yoruichi of the White sands and tells them to remember that name for it'll send them to the gallows.
  • Oh, Crap!: Vathek's face is filled with a sense of horror when he realizes Jade has given a troop of Shadowkhan under Frost's command. The other soldiers have similar reactions to seeing the "shadow demons".
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!:
    • After summoning the Razor Khan, Frost tells Vathek and Drake to remember the following words once their men lay dead at their feet:
      Frost: We...gave...you...a...chance.
    • The soldier who argues with Yoruichi says with a hint of madness that "all that matters is enacting the Queen's will and protecting Meridian's people at...any…cost".
    • The Warden's dying words are "for...the...queen".
  • Secret Underground Passage: Shallowsands is revealed to have been built around the entrance of an underground tunnel leading to Cavigor. Originally a maintenance tunnel used to make the construction of the subterranean prison easier, it was magically sealed by the contemporary queen and forgotten once the prison was completed. After Frost's reserve force digs the tunnel open in this chapter, they use it to enter the prison while the main army launches the final assault.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: When Yoruichi asks if the Warden's followers want to stain their honor by slaughtering unarmed prisoners, the head deserter replies:
"Honor?! This is war whore! Honor only belongs in fairy tales, or is used by those like Raythor to excuse their crimes! All that matters is enacting the Queen's will and protecting Meridian's people at...any…cost."
  • Slasher Smile:
    • Frost throws a grin filled with bloodlust at Vathek and Drake as he sics the Razor Khan on the defenders.
    • After Yoruichi leaves to assist Vathek and Drake, the man who argued with her gives a bloodthirsty grin as he leads his fellows to carry out the Warden's order to kill the prisoners.
  • Slut-Shaming: When Yoruichi tries to talk the Warden's followers out of killing the prisoners, their leader dares to call her a whore and accuse her of consorting with Phobos' followers.
  • Snarking Thanks: After learning that Frost's giving the rebels a chance to surrender because that's what Jade wants, Vathek thanks Frost for being one of the few things that haven't seemed to have changed in such a short period of time; in other words, he'll always be a brutish lackey for those more powerful than himself.
  • Spiteful Spit:
    • Vathek spits at Frost's boots while turning down the chance to surrender.
    • One of the Warden's followers spits at the ground while arguing to his fellows that though they're about to die, they can make their last moments worthwhile by killing the prisoners. He does it again in response to Yoruichi's threat that she'll ensure they'll end up answering for their desertion.
  • Taking You with Me: With Razor Khan having infiltrated Cavigor, the Warden, knowing they won't win and convinced all of his prisoners are as vile as Phobos, orders his men to murder them before they can be freed and join Phobos' army.
  • Wardens Are Evil: The Warden of Cavigor, while loyal to Elyon, is proven to be a Knight Templar who views all his prisoners as irredeemable loyalists of Phobos, and decides to kill them all to prevent Frost from freeing them.
  • White Flag: To honor Jade's wish to give the rebels a chance to surrender, Frost approaches the prison's entrance with a white flag and one of his captains as a witness to give Vathek and Drake that chance over the wall of flames. The warden considers shooting Frost, but Vathek says they'd be arrested for a war crime. After Frost's offer is turned down, he throws the flag into the fire and sics the Razor Khan on the defenders, satisfied he has a pretext to use them.
  • You Killed My Father: The soldier who argues with Yoruichi about killing the prisoners says that he's been fighting for the Rebellion since he lost his father to Phobos' servants as a boy.
