"Togetic...I love you."

The Mirage Kingdom is under attack as Ash, Brock, May, Max, and Misty find a hidden land occupied by Togepi. Misty's Togepi may hold the key to save them all.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Backstab Backfire: Team Rocket helps take down Hansen in revenge for him selling them out.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Togepi are saved, but Togetic decides to remain behind to protect them. Togetic gets a tearful goodbye from Misty. Also the Togepi meant for Princess Sarah arrives allowing her to two succeeded her father as ruler of the kingdom.
  • But Now I Must Go: Togetic, sadly. This now makes Misty owning only water-type Pokemon entirely, up until The Scheme Team with Azurill.
  • Commuting on a Bus: Second part of Misty's guest appearance. She returns to Cerulean City afterward.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Misty's Gyarados knocks out Shedinja with one Flamethrower attack.
  • Determined Expression: Misty gets one when she decides to send out Gyarados.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Princess Sarah invokes this on Hansen to explain Togetic's defense of the Paradise Togepi.
  • Fisher King: Whoever rules the Mirage Kingdom is this regarding the Togepi Paradise. Hansen's evil is damaging the place and hurting the Togepi. When he's defeated and Sarah earns the right to inherit the throne, the Paradise is restored.
  • Leave Him to Me!: Misty tells Togetic (who's shielding the group from Hansen's attacks) to leave everything to her before sending out Gyarados.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Misty when she unleashes her Gyarados.
  • Mama Bear: "Togetic, leave the rest to me."
  • Marth Debuted in "Smash Bros.": Since Cerulean Blues wasn't dubbed until four years after its original airing, this would be the episode that introduces Misty's Gyarados to non-Japanese audiences.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: The events that led to Misty acquiring Gyarados were depicted in the side-story Cerulean Blues, which didn't air outside of Japan until after this episode, meaning that her having it could be seen as this from the perspective of non-Japanese audiences.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Team Rocket watch from afar with relish as Hansen is taken prisoner.
  • Tender Tears: Misty, when saying goodbye to Togetic.
  • The Unexpected: Ash's reaction to Misty having trained a Gyarados since they last saw each other. To add, Colonel Hansen, thinking that water-type moves won't hit Shedinja's Wonder Guard (no damage from non-super-effective moves), was caught off guard when Misty's Gyarados used a fire-type move (Flamethrower) on Shedinja, much to a surprise.
  • Tranquil Fury: Misty when she’s about to send out Gyarados. She doesn’t raise her voice but you can tell from the look on her face that she’s had enough of Hansen at this point and is going to take him down.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Togepi evolves into Togetic, allowing it to No-Sell Shedinja's attacks.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Colonel Hansen pulls this on Team Rocket. This was a mistake.
