Recap / Pete and Pete S3 E6 Crisis in the Love Zone

Go To

Love is in the air as "spring fever" causes Wellsville's population to feel the love, much to the disgust of Little Pete and Nona. Little Pete, however, finds out first-hand how irresistible it is when he develops a crush on maillady Eunice Puell, leaving Nona to fend for herself against the unwanted advances of Pit Stain while trying to snap Pete back to reality. Big Pete fawns over Ice Queen Heather much to Ellen's annoyance, until the spring fever leaves the latter with a much different feeling about her friend. Hilarity Ensues as everyone tries to win the heart of the one they love until it wears off and everyone goes back to the way they were. At least until the next spring.

"This is 'Crisis In The Love Zone'. And these are its tropes.":

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Pit Stain for Nona.
  • A Day in the Limelight: A rare episode where Little Pete is the narrator, not the elder Wrigley.
  • Baby Talk: Little Pete refers to Eunice as his "little mushky-pushky".
  • Betty and Veronica: Ellen and Heather respectively fill these archetypes here.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Big Pete to Heather.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Little Pete prepared a bunch of warning tapes for Nona in case he had spring fever, including what to do when certain backup plans failed.
  • Description Cut: When Big Pete tells Ellen he thinks Heather's finally coming around on him:
Heather: Hickle! Quit talking to that dwink and let's go!
  • Diving Save: How Nona keeps Little Pete from saying "I love you" to Eunice, but only so she can say it to him instead.
  • Fleeting Passionate Hobbies: Ellen's hobby in this episode is tennis.
  • Girl of the Week: Per usual for Big Pete in S3. His crush in this episode is tennis player Heather; subverted in that she doesn't take a liking to him.
  • Hidden Supplies: Nona keeps her and Little Pete's LOVECON warning videos in a hidden tree trunk compartment. Her turtle is the key.
  • Ice Queen: Heather.
  • Left the Background Music On: Violin music is playing while Little Pete and Eunice have a walk; when the music stops, Little Pete turns behind him and tells his professional violinist to keep playing.
  • Let's Duet: Pit Stain and Little Pete when spring fever has a hold on them.
  • Love Confession: Ellen actually writes the magical three-word phrase in her letter to Big Pete, who never receives it. She hides it once everyone is back to normal. Little Pete's mission for Nona post-spring fever is to beat him out of it so he won't say those words; Nona winds up saying it to him during her Diving Save.
  • Love Is in the Air: The premise of the episode, with "spring fever" catching on with everyone.
  • Love Letter Lunacy: Ellen's love letter to Big Pete winds up in the hands of Little Pete, who thinks the letter from a signed "E" is from his crush Eunice instead.
  • Monochrome Casting: One of the rare Pete & Pete episodes to avert it with Heather.
  • Not So Above It All: Nona eventually caves in to spring fever as well.
  • The Pollyanna: Eunice, gushing about the spring air, buzzing bees, and the love letters she's toting around.
  • Precocious Crush: Little Pete towards Eunice Puell.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: How Big Pete gets Ellen to hit another wayward ball for him to retrieve for Heather.
  • Running Gag: A danger screen for each character marked "contaminated" when they're infected with the lovey-doveys.
  • The Scream: What the Skyward Scream turns into.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Nona when Pit Stain and Little Pete duet about love.
  • Secret Test of Character: Pit Stain thinks this is what Nona is doing when she encourages him to beat the spring fever out of Little Pete.
  • Ship Tease: Another round of Pete/Ellen in this episode, although an infected Nona tries to kiss Little Pete in the end much to his chagrin.
  • Significant Name Overlap: How Little Pete thinks the love letter from Ellen to his brother is actually for him from Eunice.
  • Skyward Scream: Nona's response to Little Pete declaring Eunice as "my little mushky-pushky".
  • Tap on the Head: Little Pete conking his head on the sidewalk during the Diving Save snaps him out of the love spell.
  • Woman Scorned: When Ellen thinks Big Pete didn't care about her letter, she smacks a tennis ball for him to chase all the way through Wellsville...and he winds up falling into a ravine.
