Recap / Peg + Cat S1E49 "The High Noon Problem"

Go To

The episode begins first thing in the morning, with Peg and Cat riding through the Wild West and singing about how it's morning time. They go to a saloon (where one of the Billy Goats Gruff is the bartender) to find it a mess. The billy goat reveals that Bad Jack, who's apparently the "fastest tickler in the West", was there and tickled him so hard he spilled all the juice.

He then leads them out to a stagecoach driven by Mac with the Neighbour Ladies as passengers. They reveal that Bad Jack tickled the Neighbour Ladies so hard they cried and Mac so hard that he still has such a bad stitch he can't drive.

The billy goat then leads Peg and Cat to a hotel, where the mermaid (in a hot tub) reveals that Bad Jack came over while they were eating breakfast and tickled Big Mouth (who's wearing a bonnet, so the mermaid mistakes him for a female) so hard he cried and also tickled Richard (who is apparently Big Mouth's nephew) so hard he got banana on his antenna.

Then, everyone reveals that Bad Jack is planning to return at high noon for a showdown and whoever loses has to leave town for good. They ask Peg to volunteer for the showdown and she agrees to. However, there is one problem: she doesn't know when high noon is.

The goat bartender takes Peg and Cat to the only person in town who can tell time: Ramone, who runs the general store and the post office. He brushes Big Mouth's teeth and informs the duo that high noon is "smack dab in the middle of the day". Richard asks why it's called "high noon" and Ramone tells him that it's because the sun is high up.

It then turns out that Peg thought a showdown was a contest to see who could do the best show, so she's rightfully shocked when Ramone tells her what it really is. Luckily, it's only a tickling showdown... but Bad Jack is the best tickler! As it turns out, however, Peg did go through a phase of tickling a lot a while back.

Ramone says that when Bad Jack wears low boots, you need a short feather, but when he wears high boots, you need a long feather. He helps the two guess which boots Bad Jack will be wearing by telling them to see which boots he wore in the past. Peg sings to the townies, asking them for information.

The Neighbour Ladies reveal that he wore tall boots when he tickled them and Mac last night, and the mermaid reveals that he wore short boots when he tickled the aliens that morning. The billy goat bartender reveals that Bad Jack has tickled him four times: the first time he wore low boots, then the next three times he wore high boots.

Bad Jack (who appears to be either the Pig or related to him) appears, and he is indeed wearing high boots, but he takes one off. Peg drops her feather, leading to Peg "totally freaking out". Thankfully, no backwards counting is required because Cat bumps into Bad Jack, knocking the feather onto himself, causing him to lose.

He leaves and sings about what he'll do tomorrow, with everybody joining in.

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal:
    • A ladybug can be seen in a cowboy hat and bandanna.
    • Cat wears a cowboy hat.
  • Accidental Good Outcome: Cat accidentally gets rid of Bad Jack, a cowboy who annoys the populace of a town by tickling the citizens, by bumping into him, making him tickle himself with his own feather.
  • Ambiguously Related:
    • The mermaid thinks Richard is Big Mouth's nephew, but then again, she also thinks Big Mouth is female, so she's an unreliable source of information.
    • If Bad Jack isn't actually the Pig, maybe they're closely related and that's why they look alike.
  • Artistic License – Child Labor Laws: Exaggerated for Ramone, who's somewhere between six and twelve and works several jobs in this town.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: The billy goat says, "Some people just call him..." and then Peg sees Ramone and exclaims, "Ramone!".
  • Big "NO!": During the showdown, there are three instances of someone shouting, "NO!".
  • Cock-a-Doodle Dawn: When Peg imagines Bad Jack waking up in the morning, she imagines a rooster crowing.
  • Cowboy Episode: This episode takes place in a generic "Wild West" setting.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: The mermaid mistakes Big Mouth for a female alien because he's wearing a bonnet. Then, Richard does too, and calls him "auntie".
  • Frothy Mugs of Water: The saloon sells juice.
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Bad Jack wears a jerkin, hat, and boots but no pants.
  • Innocent Inaccurate: Peg initially thinks a showdown is a contest to see who can do the best show.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: When Peg promises to volunteer for the showdown, Cat says dramatically, "And I'll be right by her side, just standing there".
  • Musicalis Interruptus: Peg starts to sing, "Problem Solved", but then Ramone reminds her that she's planning to face Bad Jack.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: The notorious cowboy is named Bad Jack.

  • Out Sick: Mac ends up with such a bad stitch he can't drive the stagecoach.
  • Poke the Poodle: Bad Jack is a cowboy notorious for... tickling people.
  • Speak in Unison:
    • When the bartender says that Bad Jack came, Peg and Cat say in unison, "Not the Bad Jack— fastest tickler in the West?".

  • Wearing It All Wrong: At the end of the theme, Cat wears a cowboy boot on his head.
