Recap / Peeking Through The Fourth Wall Episode 1

Go To

OK, so Lincoln Loud is sitting on his couch with Lisa, Lori, Luan, and Lucy. He has the girls say hello and lets the audience know that they will be reading a story about them. Lisa chastises fanfiction writers for having "limited brain power", prompting Lincoln to tell her to be nice. She reveals that some fanfic writers describe her, Lori, Luan, Lynn, and Lola as "mean sisters". The Louds then get started on the story, which is titled Bunking In.

The story begins with Lincoln watching TV at night with his sisters. Already, things are looking a bit off— ARGGH! is the only show Lincoln really watches at night, and his sisters don't tend to like that many shows he watches. The strangeness continues when he speaks in incorrect grammar (much to the ire of Lisa) and his sisters seem strangely focused on them being family for no particular reason.)

After fanfic Lincoln (uncharacteristically clumsily) gets out of bed, he decides he wants to sleep in his living room but Lynn Sr. says no because there's been a "robbery on couches". After the siblings on the couch point out the ludicrousness of burglars stealing only couches, Rita in the story suggests that Lincoln bunk with two of his sisters, which he thinks is a good idea. Lori (the real one) disagrees.

So, in the story, Lincoln tries the twins, but Lola objects, so he tries Lisa and Lily's room, but decides it's too dangerous (and the real Lincoln and Lisa agree). Lynn gives the confusing answer, "Of course! Not after you let me stay at your room!" but Lincoln runs away after remembering "Space Invader" and Lucy wanting him to play a corpse. He goes to Luna and Luan's room, where the latter makes a pie prank... that just involves haphazardly throwing the pies everywhere. Finally, he tries Lori and Leni's room. Lori says no (and the real Lori agrees), but Leni glares at her, so she caves in.

The real Lisa, meanwhile, has gotten so fed up with the bad grammar that she rigs explosives to detonate every time the story changes tenses.

Three days later, apparently, Lincoln in the story has bunked with all of his sisters, having inexplicably changed his mind about Lynn and Lucy's room, Luna and Luan's room, and Lisa and Lily's room, and having, equally inexplicably, convinced Lola to let him bunk with the twins after all. The fanfic versions of half of the sisters (the ones dubbed as mean) are fed up, though, with Lincoln leaving comics in the twins' room, ruining Lynn's "sleep training" by doing karate in his sleep, "ruining" Luan's pie prank... even though it was successful, and "ruining" Lisa's experiments... by saving them from exploding.

So, at night, the "mean sisters" prank fanfic Lincoln with, not bedsheet ghosts, but towel ghosts, and he falls for it. The rest of the sisters, and Lincoln, chew them out for their prank. Meanwhile, the real siblings are commenting on the ludicrousness of the plot.

Lincoln in the story breaks into tears and has some happy memories with the "nice sisters" (which the real siblings admit are pretty cute), while the "mean sisters" get grounded and finally see the error of their ways and they all have a slumber party.

After the story is over, Lucy leaves, but the rest of the sisters are in bad moods. Lori lets Lincoln know she loves him, and the four of them hug it out.

This episode provides examples of

  • Adaptational Badass: Zigzagged. Fanfic Lincoln does karate in his sleep, but he's also much whinier than usual.
  • Adaptational Dumbass: The fanfic version of Lincoln falls for the fake ghosts, even though they're made of towels and telling him to get out of his sisters' rooms.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: The story version of Lisa is much pettier towards Lincoln than the real Lisa would be, and she claims to hate his white hair.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: When the story Lincoln asks his sisters what they are doing in his room, the real Luan quips, "Playing leapfrog!".
  • Big Stupid Doo Doo Head: Luan calls Luna a "stupid butthead" for melting Mr. Coconuts.
  • Big "WHAT?!": In the story, Lincoln shouts, "WHAT?!" upon finding out his sisters were pranking him for bunking with them.
  • Captain Obvious: In the story, Luan says, "You guys got pied!" after pieing Lincoln and Luna.
  • Character Exaggeration: Lola does have anger issues, but fanfic Lola gets angry over Lincoln leaving comics in her room, which could easily be solved by simply asking him to take them.
  • Continuity Nod: Lincoln mentions the time in the canon episode "No Such Luck" when his sisters locked him out for being bad luck.
  • Death Glare: All it takes for fanfic Lori be convinced to let Lincoln bunk with her and Leni is a glare from the latter.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Lucy, despite reading Princess Pony, finds the scene of Lincoln and Lily eating cookies too saccharine.
  • Food as Bribe: Lisa's siblings convince her to come back after leaving in a huff by promising her chocolate.
  • Go-to-Sleep Ending: The fanfiction ends with the Loud siblings falling asleep.
  • Grammar Nazi: Lisa rigs an explosive to go off whenever the story changes tenses.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Luan's siblings groan when she says, "You're a night!" after Lori in the fanfiction mentions calling it a night.
  • Non Sequitur:
    • Fanfic Lincoln implies that "it's just one night" of sleeping alone, even though both he and the real Lincoln do that every night.
    • Fanfic Leni begs Lori to let Lincoln bunk with them "for your sake".
  • Noodle Implements: Luan's comment on the "mean sisters"'s attempt to make up to Lincoln involving popcorn and sleeping bags: "Also, I’ll need a rake, nine bottles of rubbing alcohol and a German-to-Italian dictionary. Oh, and one of those giant lollipops that you can only get at Disneyland."
  • Not So Stoic: Lisa admits that she's not very emotional, but she still finds herself "aww"ing over the pillow fight scene.
  • Out of Character:
    • First, the fanfic versions of the girls are way too keen to watch TV with Lincoln, just because they're family.
    • Then, fanfic Lincoln acts uncharacteristically clumsy, falling out of bed and then slipping and hitting his foot on the dresser.
Lincoln: "Okay, time out. I am not that much of a klutz."
    • He also thin-skinned while the real Lincoln is thick-skinned.
    • Fanfic Lana believes that Lola wouldn't mind Lincoln bunking with them.
Lucy: "I call shenanigans. Lana is not that naive."
    • Fanfic Lisa gets mad at Lincoln for "ruining" her experiment by preventing it from exploding. The real Lisa would be grateful unless she was deliberately trying to make it explode and if she was, she wouldn't just leave it there and go to bed. She also joins in on pranking him and says, "In your face!".
    • Fanfic Luan doesn't make puns. Instead, she just observes things and laughs.
  • Pie in the Face: Luan in the story does a variation where she just haphazardly flings the pies everywhere. The real Luan says that that's not nearly as funny as directly throwing a pie at someone.
  • Plot Hole:
    • Fanfic Lincoln is too scared to bunk with the fanfic versions of Lynn, Lucy, Lisa, and Lily, but then later on in the story, he inexplicably does.
    • Fanfic Lola didn't let Lincoln bunk with her... but then later on, she also inexplicably changes her mind.
    • Fanfic Luan complains about Lincoln "ruining" her pie prank... but the pie prank was successful.
    • The so-called "mean sisters" only act mean in the fanfic when Lincoln tries to bunk with them. Up until then, they seemed outright soppy with their niceness.
    • Fanfic Lori has a "plan" to keep Lincoln out of his sisters' rooms, even though she only let him stay with them one night anyway.
  • Ron the Death Eater: In-Universe, when Lisa points out that some fanfic writers dub her, Lori, Luan, Lynn, and Lola as "the mean sisters".
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: Fafic Lucy says, "Sigh" after Lincoln doesn't want to be her practice corpse.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Lisa tries to walk away after fanfic Lincoln's poem says, "Me is Lincoln L. Loud."
  • Sleepwalking: Fanfic Lynn trains in her sleep, prompting Lincoln to do karate on her, spoiling it... also in his sleep.
  • Snarking Thanks: Lincoln ironically thanks Lisa after she tells him he's not "that much of an ignoramus" to fall for a fake ghost made out of a towel.
  • Speak in Unison:
    • The siblings all say in unison that they expected the story version of Lola to not let Lincoln bunk with her.
    • Lincoln's sisters say, "Don't even think about it!" in unison when he considers making another "No Such Luck" reference.
  • Stuff Blowing Up:
    • Fanfic Lincoln decides not to bunk with Lisa and Lily after hearing an explosion coming from their room. He later tries to defy it by mixing something into Lisa's solution to prevent it blowing up, only for Lisa to blow it up anyway.
    • Lisa sets up miniature explosives to blow up whenever the story changes tenses.
  • Sweetness Aversion: In-Universe, the siblings find the scene of Lincoln and Lily eating cookies too cutesy.
  • Vulgar Humour: Lori and Luan snicker after story Luna asks Lincoln if he got the cream (from Luan's pies) out of his hair.
  • World's Smallest Violin: Luan quips, "Where's the world's smallest violin when you need it?" as a response to fanfic Lincoln whining about being pranked. Lucy then pulls out an actual tiny violin she found in the attic.
  • You Are Grounded!: In the fanfic, the "mean sisters" get grounded for two weeks for their ghost prank.
