Recap / Paperinik New Adventures S 1 E 27 Twilight

Go To

It's almost Christmas in Duckburg, and Donald and One have the perfect present for Urk: a way back to his dimension. Paperinik goes with him to be sure he is safe. However the happy moment is soon ruined when they discover that Urk's sister, Zeryn, has been kidnapped by the Vikings. The two heroes and Zeryn's boyfriend Kiltor take off to save her.

Tropes Present In This Issue:

  • Air-Vent Passageway: Paperinik, Urk and a viking soldier do this to go around a close door.
  • Batman Gambit: Kiltor planned the crash in order to steal Paperinik's shield and study its tecnology to travel to other dimensions.
    • Kayla, the chief of the Iroquois tribe, knew that Kiltor was a traitor and allowed Zeryn to get kidnapped in order to use her powers to destroy the creatures.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Urk will defends Zeryn from everybody, from Vikings to boys.
    • Inverted in that Zeryn is as much determined to protect him as he is to protect her. In fact she use her powers only when he is danger.
  • Continuity Nod: The Othership, the power cell from #14 "Carpe Diem", the love of Vertighel for Lyla and the fight of Paperinik and Urk against the creatures in #11 "Urk" are mentioned.
    • There's also a nod to the old Duck comics when Urk, not wanting PK's advice aboun Zerin's situation, asks if he has a sister and gets a Rhetorical Question Blunder as Donald has his fraternal twin Della (mother of Huey, Dewey and Louie).
  • Damsel in Distress: Zeryn, Urk's little sister, has been kidnapped by the Vikings. At least, that is what everybody except Zeryn and the member of the Iroquois council think.
  • Darkest Hour: At one point Paperinik and Urk are stranded in enemy's territory, the hero's shield is destroyed (meaning he can't go home), and their friend is apparently dead.
  • Did I Mention It's Christmas?: Morrighan remarks that Christmas is near, but for the rest of the issue it's never mentioned again. Justified since most of it takes place in another dimension and we can't pretend Native Americans are Christians.
  • Disney Death: Kiltor and Hastings. The latter is last seen taking some plans that may allow him to replicate the dimensional travel technology... and an explosion engulfs the room. In the following panel, the entire fortress collapses.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Urk, overjoyed because he has finally returned to his own dimension, hugs Paperinik. Cue crunching sound.
Urk: "Uh... Sorry. Did that hurt?"
Paperinik: "Just a couple of ribs. Don't worry, I have more."
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Hastings is tormented by dreams about the coming of Ragnarok. It kind of comes true in the end, when Zeryn destroys the fortress where the creatures are created.
  • Dressing as the Enemy: After they (well Urk did) beat up a patrol, Paperinik steals one of the men's uniforms and pretends to bring in Urk.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Urk is enraged to find out his sister found a boyfriend without telling him... except he was in another dimension for the last few months without means to communicate with her.
  • MacGuffin Super-Person: The Vikings want Zeryn because she is working on a weapon capable of destroying their creatures. It becomes this even more when we learn that she is the weapon.
  • Mayincatec: Downplayed, but an "Empire of the Feathered Serpent" to the south involved in a fight with the Vikings and populated by Inca and Aztecs, though it's implied to be a cohalition of some sorts.
  • The Mole: Kiltor is actually a traitor working for the Vikings. He was the one to allow the capture of Zeryn.
  • Play-Along Prisoner: Zeryn is just waiting for the right moment to unleash her powers and destroy the creatures.
  • Remember the New Guy?: So... Urk has a sister, now? Paperinik doesn't seem surprised, so maybe Urk told him off-panel, but we had no clue.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: When Paperinik asks him to calm down after he finds out her little sister has a boyfriend,he asks him if he has any sisters. When he said that yes,he does,Urk screams at him to think to his own sister and don't bother him.
  • Sequel Hook: Baron Hastings (if he survived the explosion, that is) obtains a full analisys of Paperinik's shield, including the switch to travel to different worlds.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Defied: Paperinik mistakes a viking scientist for Urk's sister because she is as big as him. The true Zeryn is actually tiny.
  • Tempting Fate: Right after Urk and PK are left stranded in the middle of nowhere, the Extransformer shield gone, Urk claims that it could be worse, as it could snow... and it promptly starts to snow. Paperinik asks him if he'd like to say anything else, Urk claims that he'd rather not, given the wolf's weather... cue to distant howling and PK facepalming.
