Tropes
- Asshole Victim:
- Averted with Sippel: his genuine remorse and Schillinger's Moral Myopia are portrayed in such a way to evoke disgust for the horrible fate that befalls him.
- Played straight with Mack, whose death is immensely satisfying.
- All-Loving Hero: Despite his initial discomfort with him Mukada decides to give Sippel work and visits him in hospital after he's attacked by the Aryans.
- Becoming the Mask: At the end of the episode Keller seems to realize that he has genuinely come to care for Beecher.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Rebadow and Busmalis set Mack and another Aryan up for their deaths.
- Big Brother Instinct: Ryan confesses to ordering the murder of Dr. Nathan's husband so that he can stay in Oz to protect Cyril.
- Dirty Cop: Metzger assists in the attack on Beecher.
- Driven to Suicide: Mukada pleads with Alvarez not to kill himself. He's about to go through with it before the guards come in and beat him up.
- Et Tu, Brute?: Beecher is devastated to learn Keller has been working with Schillinger.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Adebisi is genuinely distraught by Jara's death.
- Everyone Has Standards: McManus is happy about the attack on Sippel due to his hate for child molesters.
- Even Evil Has Standards:
- Schillinger is sickened by Sippel.
- O'Reilly is one of the few inmates to express disgust at Schillinger and Keller crippling Beecher.
- Honor Before Reason: Said's refusal to accept Devlin's pardon.
- Kick the Dog:
- Nappa and Kenny plotting the death of Jara, a harmless old man, just so they can have influence over Adebisi
- Keller and Schillinger taunting Beecher as they break his arms and legs.
- Lack of Empathy: Ryan is utterly unsympathetic about the attack on Rivera and coldly exploits the situation to get what he wants.
- My God, What Have I Done?:
- Ryan was so guilt-ridden over Cyril's brain damage that he went on a drunken, drug fueled rampage through the city, leading to his arrest.
- Keller eventually feels horrible about helping Schillinger break Beecher's bones.
- Moral Myopia: Schillinger is disgusted by Sippel, but thinks it's okay for him to rape men without ever showing a hint of remorse.
- Manipulative Bastard: Ryan helps Nappa turn Adebisi's men against him.
- No Sympathy: With the exception of Ryan, Said and Rebadow, the prisoners seem indifferent to Beecher being beat up.
- Not Me This Time: The blame for Jara's death is pinned on Adebisi.
- No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Jara's efforts to help Adebisi change his ways result in his death.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: McManus is fair to Rebadow and Busmalis after Rebadow (falsely) tells him Busmalis was forced to dig the tunnel by Mack.
