Tropes for the episode:
- The Atoner: Sippel turned himself in and continues to feel deep guilt over his crime.
- Ambiguous Situation: It's never made clear if Beecher's wife killed herself or if Schillinger was the one to arrange her death.
- Armor-Piercing Response: Subverted and played straight. When Beecher asks Said if he had actually helped in Oz, Said mentions Poet in reference to helping the latter earn his GED and get released on parole. A fair example that would've likely shut Beecher up...had Beecher not been watching a news broadcast minutes before saying that Poet was returning to Oz, and he throws this in Said's face, causing the latter to undergo a Heroic BSoD.
- Chronic Villainy: Poet fell back into his old ways and is being sent back to Oz.
- Even Evil Has Standards:
- Even Adebisi draws a line at stealing the money meant for Rebadow's sick Grandson.
- Mack and O'Reily are angered by Sippel's release.
- Everyone Has Standards: Mukada struggles to forgive Sippel. With that said he eventually comes round and tries to help him find work.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
- Ryan tries to keep Cyril away from Schillinger in order to protect him.
- Nappa is Peter's godfather and hates Adebisi for raping him.
- Guilt Complex: Tim has one over covering up Ross's murder.
- Heroic BSoD: Said has one after Beecher's "The Reason You Suck" Speech, when learning that Poet is returning to Oz. When Poet returns, Said is one of the few inmates to not mock him, instead just staring at him with tears in his eyes.
- Hidden Depths: This is the first episode to humanize Adebisi in any way, showcasing his self-loathing and desire to simply go back home.
- If You're So Evil, Eat This Kitten!: Hernandez tasks Alvarez with blinding Rivera to prove his loyalty to El Norte.
- Jerkass:
- Schillinger makes fun of Augustus when he asks him if it's possible to escape through the mailroom.
- Kenny wants to steal money for a kid who's dying of leukemia.
- Kick the Dog: Schillinger taunting the O'Reilly brothers about his rape of Cyril.
- Politically Incorrect Villain: Shirley rejects Adebisi for being black.
- Pedophile Priest: Sippel was sent to prison for fondling a young boy
- Pet the Dog:
- Hoyt organizes a donation for Rebadow's grandson.
- O'Reilly, Hernandez, Nappa and Schillinger contribute to the fund.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Beecher gives one to Said at the end of the episode where he tells him the only person he had ever really helped is himself.
- Ungrateful Bastard: Ryan reacts like this when Coushaine offers to try to find out what unit Cyril is being held in.
