Walking home with Shigeru one day after school Natsume notices black footprints with six toes leading back to the house and at their end is a strange drawing even Shigeru can see which Shigeru says he has seen before. When strange things start happening in the house Shigeru says that it reminds him of a similar thing which happened there in his childhood which mysteriously stopped after a strange teenage girl stopped by the house. Natsume learns that his grandmother Reiko was the one that stopped the attacks on the house years ago and now the same youkai is back and it’s up to him to stop it before things get as bad as they did back then.

Tropes associated with the episode:

  • Action Girl: Reiko, who in a flashback was able to quickly grab a stick out of Shigeru’s hands and hit a rock thrown at her by a bully back to hit him in the leg after scaring a youkai into returning a ball it had stolen from Shigeru and was teasing him with by making it look like it was stuck in a tree just out of his reach.
  • Animal Eyes: Evidently Reiko’s classmates took note of her strange eyes, calling her “Fox Eyes”.
  • Belly Mouth: Karime has a mouth is on its stomach which it eats with and one on its face which it uses together with its stomach mouth to talk, and Natsume quickly learns it’s big enough for him to fit in.
  • Bullying a Dragon: The two boys who bully Reiko while she is not even paying attention to them or particularly near them toss a rock at her and yell at her to go away right after saying that she can curse people (which is not a lie) and they are unquestionably unnerved by her.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Natsume jerks awake from a nightmare in which a bizarre youkai was leaning over him saying that it had found him, only to see that same youkai running out of his room and down the hall.
  • Extra Eyes: In addition to the eyes on its chest Karime has two dots on its head which may be eyes.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: Karime has a pair of large swirling eyes or eye patterns on its chest.
  • Flashback: While Shigeru tells Natsume about the kind slightly strange girl whose name he can’t remember who stopped the strange occurrences at the house the last time when Natsume asks to know more about her thinking it could have been his maternal grandmother Reiko.
  • Flash Back Echo: Reiko had a very similar confrontation with the same youkai in the Fujiwaras’ house years ago which Shigeru recalls.
  • Footprints of Muck: While walking home with Shigeru Natsume notices footprints with six toes leading to the gate of the Fujiwaras’ house with a strange drawing at their conclusion which looks like a stylized humanoid laying down with their head and hands pointing towards the house.
  • Happily Adopted: When Shigeru shows up to walk Natsume home from school he quickly leaves behind Kitamoto and Nishimura and is noticeably pleased to get to walk with his foster father.
  • Just Eat Him: Karime chews on Natsume for a second or two before Nyanko attacks it and drags Natsume out of its mouth and away from it.
  • Mistaken Identity: Natsume is mistaken for Reiko by Karime.
  • Sailor Fuku: Reiko’s school uniform.
  • Screaming Woman: Touko screams when she sees the damage done to her garden, she quickly apologies to Natsume when he comes running for concerning him but she is upset about her extensive garden looking like a pack of dogs has been digging and playing in it.
  • Stepford Smiler: Reiko smiles as two bullies walk away and when Shigeru gets mad and decides that if she wont be mad at them he’ll go after them on her behalf she laughs and stops him saying that some kids are weird, his response is that she’s still a kid too and to yell at her as she keeps laughing.
  • Talking to Themself: What Shigeru thought Reiko was doing when he saw her apparently talking to trees when he was little.
  • Teens Are Monsters: Reiko’s classmates bullied her and spread cruel rumors about her.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Kitamoto and Nishimura discuss a classmate named Tanaka who is terrified of dogs and freaked out when one approached him while he was on a date with his girlfriend.
