Hawk Moth: Weredad. I am Hawk Moth. I'm giving you the power to protect your daughter from anything that brings her harm. In return...
Weredad: I'll bring you some Cat Noir paté.

Marinette has to cover for being caught sneaking out during a crisis by claiming that she's in love with Cat Noir. But her own father gets Akumatized into Weredad, complicating matters further!

Tropes:

  • Action Prologue: The episode begins with Ladybug and Cat Noir fighting Gigantitan again.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Subverted. Cat Noir points out to Weredad that keeping Marinette a prisoner will make her miserable because of the loneliness that is being forced on her. Cat Noir then proceeds to ask if that really is what Weredad wants. Weredad falters for a bit, but is able to find his resolve by claiming that Marinette won't be alone forever since someone worthy of her will eventually come to save her.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Cat Noir notices that Marinette often shows up after Ladybug de-transforms and assumes that she must be...his fan. However, he doesn't gets to finish his thought out loud, before Marinette interrupts him by pretending she's in love in him (well, she thinks it's pretending at least).
  • Beyond the Impossible: Weredad breaks Cat Noir's baton. His indestructible, Cataclysm-proof baton. By punching it.
  • Big Labyrinthine Building: Marinette's prison magically keeps anyone from finding her, even after they get inside.
  • Closer to Earth: Sabine repeatedly tries to convince Tom to calm down and stop assuming so much. When Cat Noir comes back later, she reassures him that there's nothing wrong with his feelings before he goes to save Marinette.
  • Damsel in Distress: Zigzagged. While Marinette is indeed held hostage and is unable to transform without Tikki, she ends up saving herself by grabbing the akumatized rose, which dissolves in her hand and reverts Weredad back to Tom.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Marinette causes the main problem, but it's Cat Noir who gets the most of the focus and development.
  • Determinator: Cat Noir expresses his resolve to save Marinette several times, even when he can barely stand and is about to lose his Miraculous.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Can we say 'Cat Noir and the Beanstalk'?
  • Dramatic Irony: This episode brings the long-standing Two-Person Love Square to the forefront: after Marinette "confesses" to Cat Noir, he muses that he wishes Ladybug would do the same, still unaware that Marinette is Ladybug; meanwhile, Marinette is agonizing over how to get out of the situation, since she doesn't really love Cat Noir — except of course, that still unbeknownst to her, she kinda does.
  • Endangered Soufflé: Marinette's dad makes a heart-shaped souffle to celebrate her and Cat Noir apparently getting together... but after Cat admits he doesn't return Marinette's feelings, the souffle collapses with a comical pffft.
  • Fairytale Motifs: The episode combines elements of Jack and the Beanstalk (a giant vine with a monster at the top), Beauty and the Beast (a hairy beast with a magic rose holding a girl captive), and Sleeping Beauty (a girl trapped within a wall of thorns).
  • Green Thumb: How much control Weredad actually had over the rose is unclear, but he did have a vine wrapped around his center, and another two around his wrists.
  • Heroic Spirit: Subverted. Cat Noir does everything he can against Weredad and refuses to give up. It doesn't matter because Weredad beats him anyway.
  • It's Not You, It's My Enemies: Invoked by Marinette as reason why she shouldn't date Cat Noir, but Tom just says that he can stop being a superhero after Hawk Moth is defeated.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Weredad beats up Cat Noir to the point of collapse, and even manages to destroy his staff. He was about to remove his ring when Marinette freed the akuma, causing him to transform back into Tom.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Marinette's lie about being in love with Cat Noir ultimately causes her father to become Weredad when Cat Noir has to break it off, which isn't helped by her overacting her disappointment.
  • Noodle Implements: We're not shown how a giant fake donut assisted in defeating Gigantitan.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Cat Noir gets beaten up by the furious Weredad and can barely stand in the end.
  • Not the Fall That Kills You…: As the rose breaks apart and everyone is in freefall, Ladybug and Cat Noir fashion a paraglider out of the sail of a sailboat.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: After Ladybug conjures the giant donut, the scene cuts to Tom trying to find Marinette while Ladybug and Cat Noir defeat Gigantitan outside.
  • Oh, Crap!: Both Cat and Tikki scream when they see the gigantic plant. Sabine also gasps in mounting horror when she sees the akuma about to enter the flower.
  • Papa Wolf: Almost literally. While Tom doesn't become an actual (were)wolf, despite the name Hawk Moth gives, he does fall victim to the akumatization because he wants to protect his daughter from harm forever.
  • Shipper on Deck: Tom ships Marinette and Cat Noir hard, and is utterly devastated when he rejects her.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: Plagg encourages Adrien to go out with Marinette...on the grounds that her dad is a Supreme Chef.
  • Skewed Priorities: During the Action Prologue, people are running away from Gigantitan. One driver is running out of his car and still stops to lock it, only for it to be squashed by Gigantitan a second later.
  • Sleeping Dummy: Marinette set a ball with a wig on her bed with a blanket on top so that she can go out and help fight Gigantitan without arousing suspicion. Unfortunately, Tom finds out about it before she can get back to her room.
  • Sustained Misunderstanding: For nearly the entire episode, everyone thinks Marinette hugging Cat Noir was her confessing her love. Cat himself merely thought she was a fan.
  • Through Her Stomach: At the end of the episode, after accepting that Cat Noir doesn't have feelings for Marinette, Tom suggests that he learn to bake anyway to woo Ladybug with fresh croissants.
  • Transformation Sequence: The first episode in the series not to feature either a Cat Noir or Ladybug transformation sequence, although we do see two activation sequences for Lucky Charm and one for Cataclysm.
