"Heroes aren't born, they're forged in steel; tempered with fire and honed on the battlefield with the light of- hold on, wait wait wait I wasn't finished! Oh goddammit, I forgot what I was saying... Anyway, it's The Adventure Zone!"

How did Taako, Magnus, and Merle actually meet before being hired by Gundren Rockseeker? Well, in a bar. Hilarity Ensues.
Tropes
- Bar Brawl: Downplayed; the bartender won't tolerate a rowdy fight, and the rival adventurers only want a series of small 1-on-1 challenges.
- Futureshadowing: Once the three rival adventurers reveal that their next stop is Phandalin, Taako, Magnus and Merle quickly wish them farewell.
- How the Mighty Have Fallen: Taako is introduced alone in a corner, devastated at having recently caused mass fatalities in his famous cooking show.
- I Work Alone: Magnus insists he's a lone wolf who's not looking for a team. This is a direct result of his Survivor Guilt from failing to protect his wife and father-in-law from a tyrant's revenge.
- Origins Episode: As a direct prequel to the first arc of the series, this episode recounts how the three heroes decided to form a team together.
- You All Meet in an Inn: The classic way for D&D characters to meet. Magnus is whittling a duck, Taako is studying transmutation spells, and Merle is handing out "Pan Tracts" to anyone who will listen.
